There is much work yet to be done...

*-*-*-*-*

Just a quick OOC note that the Dig site that was added to the Court of the Living, is not just meant to be that one spot on the map, it's meant as a general representation of things that are pulled out of the sand from all over that area.

This is largely going to be the honor system but please be mindful of the following:
- Anything found would be caught by the undead guards searching you as you exit (see Court of the Living sticky for details) so please don't run off with them. If you really want to try to sneak something past, please get in touch with me and we can set something up.
- The donations chest has been placed right at the exit for you to drop anything you find from the site into.

Happy digging!

The following is viewable along the wall of the Tower of the Damned leading towards the Court of the Living's primary bridge. It is not written upon parchment, nor engraved into the stone itself, but rather, it is etched into the air with a soft blue light. The light that makes up the letters is quite easy to make out for most, though it is somewhat transparent and wholly impalpable: an illusion of arcane origins.

Let there be no mystery as to the causality of the emergence of this new segment of Tarkuul. The enigmatic power known as The Voice is not singularly responsible, nor are the intrepid deeds of those people who braved the sea the day it escaped from the depths. Rather, the emergence of this place of new opportunity and discovery is the result of the work of all Tarkuulians in their daily struggle towards knowledge. Every being who has ever graced this city with even a brief visit may claim a contribution towards this spectacular triumph and the pride that comes with it.

With anticipation for the future accomplishments of Tarkuul,

Mania Jebalat

Gerald can be found frequenting the gate to the Court of the Living, posting on sentry duty in an effort to monitor activities during the excavations, and to ensure that no relics found within the site are taken from the city. And he would quite frequently employ Polymorph scrolls to transform into an Umberhulk, if he suspects the excavation sight is being infiltrated by invisible casters, stealth specialists, or anyone else who he may not manage to see.

Once every hour, he patrols the courtyard in Umberhulk form regardless of activity in order to secure the location.

He also makes a point to summon his Cornugon, re-summoning it as needed, to assist with the digging.

Sicarius can be seen at one point heading into the Living Courtyard, a wand in hand. The Captain headed to the northern part of the Courtyard by the sea and using the wand, polymorphs himself into an umber hulk. The Captain uses the huge hands of the hulk to his advantage and begins raking the sand into the sea intent on clearing at least this part first. He continues with this for a time, using three charges of the wand to utilise the umber hulk form keeping to the area close to the sea.

Afterwards the Captain would review his work, regardless if he was displeased with it or not he would return to the city center.

Luca is seen on the highest point of the island to the north, with his shadow lingering close behind, patiently waiting for direction. Luca himself works naked to the waist, using a shovel and a stick to probe different parts of the mound. He never stays in one place too long, instead he seems to be searching for anything solid. Any cracks or gaps he uncovers, his shadow flows into to inspect the crevasse. He seems more than willing to put in sweat and blisters into the work, though he is forced to take short breaks, massaging his heavily scarred left hand.

For Emilie's part, she mostly watches Luc work, or as she likes to call it: 'supervising'. She has a shovel in hand and when the mood strikes her she casts Mass Haste on her and anyone in the proximity and scrapes sludge and sand off the tallest point in the Court. After a few painstakingly long minutes of this, she ceases and flicks sand off the edge with her boot, looking to be rather petulant about the whole thing until she decides to be useful again.

Meanwhile she sends her Shade to go poke around the crevices near the scaffolding to see what can be found.

The shade that Emilie sends to investigate the rockface near the scaffolding, would be outright Turned by a glaring Febrith, before the petite woman moved back to her own work.

When not on sentry duty, or on patrol, Gerald makes an effort to use his Umberhulk transformation to help unearth the city. And he'd try to see if any of the sunken ship that floated up with the island was salvageable for use as a massive digging tool!

*A Substantial part of the Enforcer Eeries day would be spent sifting through the great piles of sand for artifacts. The great piles were amassed by no less than two devils, two umber hulks, and a great dragon. She would curse everytime she chipped a nail and would mutter as her fingertips cracked and bled*
"I never thought I'd see the day grown men wave around wands like dancing elves"

*A charming fellow mostly unknown to her would cast mass haste spells to aid in the task.Eerie would benifit from a stroke of genius as she expended a diamond of the wind to keep pace with the workers blowing loose sand into the welcoming arms of the sea.*

"Captain look!"

*Eerie would skip over to the Captain and surrender a shiny object found on the surface of the sands. Apparently there was reward in productive service*

The Living Guard continues work in sand removal, assuming the forms of large beasts and raking the excess sand into piles in the northern area. These piles of sand are often searched for anything of interest and afterwards are pushed into the sea.

When sergeant Naygyrn is not seen guarding the City or the Court during his shifts, the presence of yet another excavating Umber Hulk would be noticeable. For the present, its attention seems to be focused on the southern side of the Court of the Living...

A supply of buckets and shovels are delivered to the Captain and a few of his guards. Phrixus quickly retrieves her compensation, and also accepts the donation to the Syndicate as well. She agrees to come back to help with the excavation, but only after she takes care of prior engagements to help stock her opening day supply.

Irae'arra seems to prefer to work on her own, digging with the help of her Corruptor, or Vorel, her red dragon companion. She accepts any help offered, but is her usual stoic self, offering little in the way of friendly banter, unless Gerald happens by, in which case she opens up a bit more.

Tililalli could be seen on occasion, directing a glabrezu to aid in the digging - doing little in the way of direct physical work herself though. Much more content to let what beings she could bring about to do so for her. She would though be more than happy to seek others out and babble at them for as long as they would allow though, while they aided in the works

*The day was rainy, dismal, and gloomy even for Tarkuul. The Captain , Eerie, and Sam were working to remove and sift through the sludge on the northern part of the court of the living. The timely arrival of tools from the Trade Syndicate eased the burden some. All in all there really wasn't anything to bitch about-but that didn't stop Eerie*

Less skilled excavators are asked by the figure to work elsewhere if they venture near its chosen sites with their enormous creatures of burden, to avoid disrupting its own work with their "animal digging". It makes no protest if any come to remove the piles of sand it has already dredged out, but does not appear to welcome the massive, brute force tools in any actual unearthing of the sand - only in hauling it away.

A man dressed in variety of burial shrouds and followed by a swarm of buzzing insects was seen
examining the rock from the distance and if possible gaining a closer look upon it. He was writing down
some notes in a book of sorts and muttering to himself.

Said fly-ridden man would be left alone for the most part, until such a time as he tried to get up close to the rock face itself. At that point the man would be met by a scowling Febrith and though she wouldn't utter a word, it would be apparent enough that the man would back away, lest something unpleasant befall him.

*Every morning at the crack of dawn a cloaked winged figure emerges from Tarkuuls Castle and approaches the Court of the Living. Always taking the highest perch on the western side of district, he holds a pouch in left hand and a staff in his right. Looking down upon the sand as he incants the words to the spell "Move Earth". Lifting as much of the sand up and back into the ocean as he can manage. After hours of casting, the robed figure flies back into the Living City and returns the following morning to repeat the process*

A skull-faced figure makes a round of the region before it departs from its own chosen site for at time to rest, speaking with others who toil in the sand. In a voice that defies easy classification of masculine or feminine, it advises with flat affect to each it approaches - particularly those who seem possessed of a need to remove sand as quickly as possible. It speaks without rancor or ire, without condescending or snide:

"There are piles which are searched and found to be devoid of anything of value which can be removed indiscriminately. However, careless shoveling and digging like may destroy prizes yet undiscovered. If you have no interest or talent for archeology, do not impede those who do. If there are none present at the time you work to show you where best to dig, then restrain yourself to dumping into the sea only that which has already been sifted through by specialists."

*Likely any artifacts found in the area would slip through the loose dry sand as it's lifted up and dropped into the ocean. After casting his spell he'd look to the newcomer advising him. Without a word to the man he flies back to the Living City, returning the following morning.*

Very few "artifacts" would actually seem to be recovered at this stage. Whether it is a function of the methods of sand removal, or it being only the uppermost layers of sand and sediment that are exposed so far, or a simple lack of such items to be found however, is for the moment unclear.

Two individuals seem to be going about it the "right" way however, the solemn male archaeologist working on the lower tier of sand finding the first item recovered from the sands; a minor bauble that would appear to be a simple round stone, but with what a few in the city would recognize as a single Netherese rune upon it. Such an item could easily be mistaken for any other stone upon the sands, easily pitched into the sea by a less careful individual.

The more androgynous figure of the archaeological pair seems to be busily and carefully working at unearthing the tip of some obelisk or pointed top of a tall building that rests beneath the sands. More such runes are evident on the tip of the structure, though more delicate work will be required to clearly uncover their meaning even by those familiar with the alphabet.

The somber pair that worked with skillful diligence swapped tasks shortly after the discovery of the rune stone. The lanky male assumed responsibility of the careful exhuming of what seemed to be the crown of a some structure, while the shrouded and skull-masked figure migrated on to begin progress at another site...

And Gerald, of course, makes an effort to assist Irae'arra, nearby with his shovel and bucket, as opposed to his Umberhulk scroll.

But when she isn't around, he does indeed return to his usual routine of moving sand from one spot to the other for proper inspection, still using his massive, improvised digging tool, if it is still intact.

As the figure shut her notebook, a single sigh escaped from her lips. It'd been a long day. A few donations were made to the Syndicate that had to be added to the inventory, and a new list had to be made with the additions. She'd struggled with the pricing, figuring perhaps that she would take the Enforcer's advice of an auction for such weaponry and armor. The idea did have a ring to it. She'd made note to bring it up it up at the meeting.

After all the struggles of her current business, she found it a suitable time for a drink and distraction. She stuffed her notebook in her satchel, making her way towards the bar upstairs. She poured herself a tumbler of whiskey, downing it down the hatch almost as quick as she poured. The face that was made was priceless, but thankfully there was nobody, visible at least, around to see. She'd liked the way it burned going down, it was a pleasant distraction. It made her realize as soon as her time was done setting up the Syndicate, she might have to take a small break to herself for Priestess duties. It had been sometime, indeed, and there was still so much work to be done. She'd thought back to a conversation she'd had with the Speaker a night ago, considering his words as she made herself another round. She'd been focusing on her own business, this is true. She'd however feel more comfortable if she'd do something to help the excavation go more smoothly. If she supplied the demand of shovels and buckets, that was one thing. It was another, to find something that might inevitably aid herself.

She'd remembered her first trip to the site, how she looked over every inch to see if there was one particular thing she might of been interested in. There was. It was the remains of what looked like a ship had wrecked. How it ended up so far upwards in the site, was beyond her own knowledge, but the whole thing still caught her attention. As she found her thoughts moving towards the remains, she pushed her glass across the bar and made her way downstairs and out the door of the Castle.

When she arrived at the site she noticed that beside the undead workers, she seemed to be alone. However, in Tarkuul, she knew better then to assume. As she neared the wreckage, she nodded her approval and surveyed the length and width of the area.

She heads back to the Castle to change into the appropriate clothing, and then returns to begin on her area of focus for the excavation. She'd stay until night, putting any items of interest in a bucket at her side. Then, when she finished, she'd carry the bucket back to her room in the Castle, and wouldn't return until the next evening.

A letter is left in Sicarius' office:

"Captain, please ensure the checkpoint at the bridge is functioning smoothly, and that people working in the sands are strongly discouraged from using their leyline wands without being checked over. Keep detailed logs of who turns in what, so that all artifacts can be returned to their rightful finders after their relevance to the greater plan is assessed. We have no desire to deny them their rewards for assisting. Furthermore, please ensure that people are taking the relevant care with their excavations. Ensure that all workers are following the instructions of the skilled researchers, such as 'Kemnon'. If they blatantly disregard instruction, have them leave for the cycle. I will be providing some tools that should assist in this. Do keep in mind that our primary goal is to clear the streets to render the district functional, the archeology is a secondary concern. Try to moderate a careful medium between reckless digging and analyzing every bloody grain of sand. I'll leave that to your discretion.

~L.S."

Later, as the sun is nearing the horizon, Luca would be found in the trade hall with a hammer and a bucket of nails, along with scrap lumber and spools of wire. Using one of the benches, he sets to work nailing together simple square frames, across which a mesh of wire is laid and fastened. He makes perhaps half a dozen of the simple objects, before carrying them to the Court and placing them around the perimeter of the district in convenient locations. One could assume they are for sifting the sand for objects. After stripping to the waist and retrieving his shovel and stick, Luca calls his shadow and begins his usual routine of using the tools to hunt for solid structures under the sand, uncovering crevasses and holes for his Shadow to slip into and explore. Despite the coming of evening, he seems to have no need for a light source for his work.

Though far from personable, the robed figure that responds to the name Kemnon is at hand for approximately half of a given day to generally instruct others who deign to listen on the proper methods of excavation, as well as how to handle the tools and what to look for. It acts toward the streamlining of the process into an efficient chain of tasks with a dispassionate diligence. For those willing to work under its guidance, it strives to coordinate these individuals to the task best suited to their capability to learn and obey.

It explains in its dry, androgynous drawl that those who are observant and perceptive, but not particularly skilled, can make excellent use of the sifters that have been provided by Luca. General instruction is provided to set aside anything that is not sand to be examined by more knowledgeable individuals, and keep to their time focused on sorting potentially useful baubles from ocean silt and sand.

Those best suited to grunt labor are advised to use sifting stations as their waypoints as often as possible, to avoid impeding the progress of progress of personnel trained for excavation and recovery, and to remove sand that has been deemed as valueless deadweight by those sifting.

It explains that the reasons for this are multiple. It is not only to ensure that objects of value are not lost and that the integrity of buried structures, which may be held together only by the pressure of the sand after so much time submerged, remain intact. Kemnon cautions that there is also the potential for cursed remnants or causing undo stress the quarter by haphazard removal, which can be mitigated by the skill and knowledge of those with the specialization to deal with it ... but only if they are afforded the opportunity to do so in the first place.

Any who express in interest in learning the specialized trade of archeology to contribute to the expeditious and efficient restoration of the district are flatly invited to come and be taught.

A notice is posted near the entrance of the Court of the Living and in various areas around the City.

Excavation Notice
Residents and Visitors of the Living City.

As all of you should've noticed by now a new section of Tarkuul has been raised from the sea, excavations are taking place to make it habitable and fit for use for the rest of the City. Removal of the sand will take some time, those willing to lend their skills for the advancement of Tarkuul may contribute to excavations. But the below rules must be observed when venturing into the Court of the Living.

Firstly, portal wands are no longer permitted to be carried into the Court of the Living. Other means of teleportation is also forbidden.
Secondly, all artifacts found within the Court must be turned over to either the Speaker, the Headmaster of the Magisterium Mortis or the Captain of the Living Guard. Once these artifacts have been assessed, they will be returned to the one who found them.
Thirdly, you are to submit to a search by the Living and Unliving Guard when entering and exiting the Court.
Fourthly, excavations are to be done with a degree of discretion. All sand removed must also be examined to check for artifacts before thrown into the sea, furthermore the City beneath the sand is not to be damaged. Reckless methods of excavations is not to be tolerated.

Violation of any of these rules is considered a violation of the First Law, this is a collective project for the advancement of Tarkuul, therefore advancement of knowledge and power for the City as a whole.

In service of the Living City
Captain Sicarius

*With the new decree the robed figure willingly submits to the check upon entering and exiting the district. Now as appose to dumping the majority straight into the sea he forms a large pile of sand near the edge to be examined. If the large pile is is still there the next morning he would form a second pile. If both piles are there one morning however he would not return to cast again until at least of one of his piles has been pushed into the sea.*

By the next morning, when Kemnon finds that the piles have not performed their sandy mitosis again, it seems to surmise the unspoken clause regarding their presence, for it sets to work sifting them until it can rope another into the task and return to its own site.

The thin, lanky man attending Kemnon and working fastidiously and carefully to exhume the buried building occasionally makes his way over to Draco's piles, sifting through them at his master's direction with the skills of a very talented archaeologist.

Investigation of the shipwreck by the blue-clad woman would reveal that as with most such wrecks that have sat beneath the water for quite some time, the timber and metal alike are mostly unusable. While the wood is rotten or entirely too brittle, riddled with holes from underwater creatures, the metal long since succumbed to corrosion and a degradation of its structure.

As she starts to carefully and methodically remove the sand from the site, she would start to see just a little more of the upper deck of the ship. For the most part all she would find for the time being would be bits of uselessly frayed rope, a few boarding hooks and other bits and bobs. But as any treasure seeker knows, the best loot to be found on a ship is found below deck...

*-*-*-*-*

As the lanky archeologist continues to work at carefully uncovering the rune-clad structure, it would slowly become evident that it is more a monument of some sort, than an actual tall structure. Though most of the writing at the topmost level is cracked or worn away by the waves, it would be apparent to the man that the more progress he makes, the less damage their is; the lower down the stonework he goes, the less time it was exposed to the open sea.

The progress on the rune-etched crown of whatever lay further beneath the sand is of obvious interest to the skull-masked figure, who ventures by to appraise and discuss the work with its lean excavator when it can spare the time to do so.

They converse in quiet tones about the nature of the structure, comparing thoughts on what each can decipher of the worn, nearly ruined script near the base of what has thus far been revealed. Though the dispassionate figure exudes no overt signs of delight, the interest and diligence it dedicates to the discovery could easily allow others to infer an elevated mood where one was otherwise not displayed. Despite this, it does not loiter overly long at that site when the other archeology is working there, soon returning to scour the sand at other chosen locations.

It does, however, assume the work on the runic architecture when its lankier, decidedly male counterpart toils in the dunes that Draco has relocated. The first time that they switch shifts and its colleague makes his way toward the pile, it leaves him with a humorless remark that, "While it is poor progress, it is progress none the less."

The Living Guard and some volunteers of late has focused their efforts on excavating the ship, clearing and forming great piles of sand around it. Members of the Guards sift through the piles for any artifacts then filling buckets with the sand and emptying it into the sea.

Their goal seems to be to unearth the ship to facilitate its removal and gain access to whatever is within its holds.

Though the androgynous, skull-masked figure and the lean, pale man assist for a time at the ship wreck, they soon deem their time better spent at a task other than simple labor. They make survey of the wreckage itself to determine the nature and worth of the ship; was it a mere sea-going vessel drowned by the Bitch Queen's unpredictable wrath, or a relic from a bygone age worth salvage and restoration ... ?

Image

All evidence pointed to the former. The archeologists returned to their own site for a time, securing the structure being uncovered, least the shifting sands and pressure are cause for the rune-etched spike to topple before it can be properly mended.

The pair reported their findings on the vessel and progress with the obelisk to Captain Sicarius. A brief discussion on other logistics concerning the on-going excavation was had before the pair retired from the Court, taking with them a mental list of other tasks and considerations.

Sicarius remains preoccupied with digging around the ship, still evidently intent on gaining access and being able to remove it. He spends most of the time digging, creating piles of sand nearby and then occasionally sifting through them for any artifacts before throwing the excess sand off into the sea via bucket.

The Captain could also be seen at one point issuing orders to three of the zombie workers at the excavation site to sift through the sand piles and separate anything non-sand from the sand.

Once again, members of the Living Guard work around the buried boat, intent on unearthing it! The same procedure is kept: The sand is first piled up, then sifted for artifacts, and finally dumped into the sea.

The last few nights would have Luca in the Court of the Living with only a pair of trousers and a shovel, the rest of his possessions presumably left in his chambers. He works at shoveling the already sifted piles of sand into the ocean with a relentless pace, working until his hands blister and bleed and his body slick with sweat, only stopping until the sun peeks above the horizon. He retreats from the light and heat, taking cat naps in the shade of the scaffolding of the cliff-face and writing in a small black book with a charcoal pencil. When the sun vanishes once more, he is at the piles again with his shovel, the wood of the handle stained a reddish-brown from the blood of broken blisters.

Anyone taking the time to observe the usually over-dressed man would note that the fair skin of his arms are marred with a set of relatively fresh runic scars of arcane significance, while his left hand is nearly crippled by thick scarring, much much older in their appearance. Gnarled muscle and tendon show through in some places and what remaining skin is waxy and unpliable, the old wound stopping just shy of his elbow. It obviously causes him significant trouble with his work, through he seems to refuse to acknowledge the handicap. His creased brow and stormy eyes hint at a troubled preoccupation, and it becomes apparent that the Speaker sublimates his problems with intense manual labor.

Mania tends to watch the hot, sweaty work in the afternoons from a distance promising both a fine view and safety from the flying sand. She wouldn't want to get grit in her mint julep after all!

A great gout of sand puffs up into the air around the workers as their shovels finally breach the hold of the buried ship, covering them all from head to toe and stinging their eyes. As the sand settles once again, they can see that the below desks of the ship seemed to have not been filled with hardly any sediment or sand at all, rather covered over in a sort of “cocoon” of sediment beneath the sea.

As they carefully make their way into the hold, picking their way through the debris within, they would see surprisingly little of real value. While any food or fine silks or the like would have been decimated by the watery depths no doubt, there should (by most logical reckoning) still be any remains of gold or any other such precious materials to be found. Not a single strongbox, mithril statuette, or even copper coin remains aboard the ship.

Either these were very poor sailors… or something beat them to it… but what?

*-*-*-*-*

Meanwhile, the efforts of the two archaeologists in regards to the rune-covered object are slowed, as it becomes evident that the newest few inches they manage to extract, show signs of severe cracking that may well effect the stability of the pillar. Just below that large crack however, is the first rune that has been intact enough to make out, just peeking out above the sands. With a little care and restoration, the two are able to make out the single word that is formed…

Forsaken

With the boat excavated, some of the Living Guard can be seen sifting and removing the remaining piles of sand made from digging up the boat. Once done, they move to certain cliff edge and start digging around a stone marker forming new piles of sand.

Rainy nights, stormy nights. The Living Guard brave the elements and keep on digging in that area with the same procedures as before, removal of sand into piles and sifting of said piles before disposing of the sand. The digging is not quite silent either, the Guardsmen can often be heard conversing with topics ranging from daily life to the art of shadows to the power of blood and other such topics.

Recently it seems the Guard has taken to using magical rings to fend off the elements as they continue work at the dig site.

An Excavation Advisement wrote:

Those able to freely assume the form of an Umber Hulk
are advised to take advantage of this form's senses
to ascertain likely locations of buried structures.
Such locations should be reported to persons of authority and skilled excavators.

There are areas deemed SENSITIVE in the Court of the Living
which require special procedure at the discretion of those overseeing them,
and should not be worked without consultation and approval of said individuals.
Those areas currently include:

* The eastern cliff - overseen by Febrith
* The runed pillar north of the shipwreck - overseen by Mathus and Kemnon

Other areas will be included as they are identified.

The Excavation Advisement is given a stamp of an approval by Sicarius.

All should heed this advisement.

In service of the Living City
Captain Sicarius

The increase in rainful seen in Tarkuul proves to be both a blessing and a curse to the efforts in the Court.

While the fall of the water begins creating little rivelets here and there that wash away small amounts of loose sediment and sand into the sea, the rain also makes shovel handles slick and the excavation work that much more dismal.

The pale, thin archaeologist is missing for a time, and comes back with a number of canvas tents and lengths of rope, which he then cannibalizes to create coverings for the obelisk dig site. He works without complaint, even as the driving rain soaks him to the bone and melds his cloth to his flesh, although he accepts any assistance offered towards this end. Once the barriers have been erected, he resumes his digging and cataloguing.

Shovel, sift, ditch! And the Living Guard's work continues around the same area. Usually, by the stone marker, some guardsmen can be seen working (with the occasional arguments and sandcastles).

The Living Guard continue with excavations, toiling away as they dig and sift sand. The Captain can often be seen on his own at the excavation sites, often he is he is accompanied by his Guardsmen. The Captain at least seems to prefer to dig when it isn't raining in an ungodly fashion.

On one such occasion, Sergeant Gerald assumed the form of an umber hulk and used its tremor sense to find any possible pitfalls or hazards as they dug. Any hazards detected would be marked by a fragment of wood taken off the shipwreck nearby.
