A notice is pinned up within the Magisterium MortisMy fellow Seekers,

I require the skills of an experianced transmutor to aide me in a task of importance, I am creating a ritual object of some power and will require the expert advice of a specialist, or at the very least someone with more knowledge in this area of the art than I.

All basic materials have been collected and I have an example of the designs required. Naturally you will receive credit for assisting me in this venture, I believe the final product would be one useful to our departments.

Regards,

Novitus Aarin

((NB: Shaping Gem Stones, such as the black onyx I'll be using for this would usually require castings of http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/stoneShape.htm, as long as DM's are happy with the method, I was going to buy as many fourth level spell scrolls as required and burn them ICly to emulate the cost of casting the spell for the crafting process.))

A spur of life is seen in the court of the Undying as the Magistrate of Tarkuul paces between the tower and the castle followed by a large number of skeletal cohorts. Each of them carrying large pile of books and scrolls. As he exits the Castle empty handed the Magistrate instead takes up a position to oversee the skeletons who continue to carry items from the tower into the castle.

Several days earlier, Gerald could be seen in The Living City fit the first time in some months of absence. After a brief period of waiting he found himself conversing with a burly, armor clad Phantom. It wasn't long before he presented a sword to the Phamtom. Before leaving he takes a moment to check up on his former subordinates in the Living Guard.

However now he can be seen, three days later, reporting to the barracks, no longer in finery but instead in newly acquired chainmail, dressed and ready for battle.

Whatever the former Captain was doing here, it seemed to call him out of retirement.

The Shadowkin known as Dmitra can once again be seen wandering the city, most of her time spent in the library searching for information relating to the subject of Dracoliches.

After a few hours of rummaging through the scrolls and dusty tomes in the truly ancient library of
Tarkuul, the seeker lays his gaze on a pamphlet published by an anonymous scholar. The parchment
which contains a drawing of a massive skeletal dragon is written entirely in draconic script, a common
and favored language among the educated, yet often exotic and foreign to the masses. Naturally, to
those who can comprehend the tongue of the wyrms this represents no barrier at all.

HISTORY OF DRACOLICHES

"Many sages and magical practitioners - experts in the realm of dragons claim that Falazure the Night
Dragon created the first dracoliches. There might be some truth to this, considering that night dragon
is a commonly accepted term when referring to a Dracolich. As wholly unnatural, created beings,
however, a common heritage is hard to trace. The origins of dracoliches are as varied as the locales in
which they appear, whether they come about through the machinations of madmen and demented
cults or by dragons instigating the unnatural process through their own arrogance and naked ambition.

The earliest known dracolich, the infamous Dragotha, was created from the body of one of Tiamat's
favored consorts. The god of undeath, granted him unlife in exchange for his eternal servitude. Since
then, mortal adepts have developed dim echoes of the god's magics in the form of a powerful ritual
accompanied by the consumption of a foul magical concoction - part poison to slay the imbiber and
part elixir to bring about the cold existence of undeath - called The Damnable Libation, or more simply,
Dracolich brew.

One other commonality in the origins of dracolich is their absolute reliance on a magical phylactery in
which to store their souls. In this they parallel their humanoid counterpart in undeath, the lich. No one
is sure how they came to follow this path and no other form of undead is so reliant upon such a
receptacle -- except perhaps vampires' connections to their coffins. Perhaps dracoliches rely upon
these essential repositories for their nigh invulnerability, although they trade it for extreme vulnerability
at the hands of anyone who should locate their soul-storing phylactery. Perhaps this crucial flaw holds
some symbolic significance such as being a representation of the Hades Pyxis, the receptacle of the
Night Dragon hidden somewhere within th.."

The scroll abruptly ends here, as if it was separated from the rest of the research. The second page
could be close by, waiting to be found by those who are persistent enough in their intentions.

The Shadowkin would spend countless hours by candlelight in an attempt to copy the scroll word for word. Once satisfied with her work she would begin the search for the remainder of the scroll, desperation clear as she goes from bookcase to bookcase in a methodical search.

Who wrote this? I need to find the rest of it.

The Shadowkin approaches the nearest librarian.

Some time later, squeezed between two tomes a scroll is found. Judging by the handwriting it is
beyond doubt a deed of the same unknown author. Alas this page does not continue where the last
one ended. Could there be a missing page in between?

PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIETY OF THE DRACOLICH

"Consider a creature that lives almost forever agreeing to its own excruciating murder to achieve
biological immortality. Could it be that all dragons, tortured by the knowledge of their own transience,
face this death gladly? Could their near endlessness be a living curse - the very nearness of eternity
being a madness that mortal minds cannot concieve? Dare they trust those who promise them unlife
in the final moments before their deaths?

Some believe that a Dracolich must, by necessity, be insane: a dragon driven by such insatiable need
and ego that it cannot perceive its own death and is willing to go any lengths to avoid it - including
the tortuous ritual of death followed by an appaling undead rebirth. Other say that lichdom is
something most dragons some day strive for, as the thought of their own mortality is unbearable to
such narcisstic creatures. Perhaps they are to be pitied - creatures so unable to face rest that they
willingly go to any lengths to avoid it, so fuelled by greed and desire that they cannot conceive of
such hungers ending. Avoiding death becomes an obsession, a need so great that it causes them to
face their own agonizing poisoning to achieve it.

Dracoliches, as creature of great intelligence, are consumed by needs and quests, driven by the
knowledge that one day they will succeed in all their goals and face the ultimate terror of torpidity.
They are thus creatures of g reat distraction, able to juggle a thousand sand plots at any time, almost
needing to do so. They are alos, therefore, many things to many people: a tyrant ruling a kingdom, a
benefactor to sages engaged in unfathomable studies, a fearsome battle commander conquering vast
territories, and a terrible legend. Uniquely driven, dracoliches are terrible creatures undeed, sometimes
seemingly mad in their goals, and desires - which are almost as endless as their own lives. When two or
more of these ferocious, proud and terrible creatures meet, such engagements frequently end in one's
destruction. A dracolich is a terrifying foe, and other dracoliches rightly avoid their own kind for fear of
being matched. As such, they use their ancient cunning to lure others to do their dirty work for them,
spreading rumors of boundless treasure along with their opponents' possible weaknesses, all the while
doubling and redoubling their already obsessively thorough defenses."

With a hint of excitement, the Shadowkin goes about copying the contents of the scroll into her book. Once completed she approches the nearest libranian once again.

"Would it be possible to have these scrolls examined for traces of magics?"

After speaking with the librarian the Shadowkin goes about searching the library for another scroll. After awhile she can be seen speaking with an offical at the Magisterium Mortis

"I'd like to set an appointment to speak with the headmaster at his first convenience."

After a rather exhausting search under the candlelight, the seeker locates yet another piece of the
puzzle only to realize that it is a riddle of its own. Whatever happened to this part of the study, it
left the scroll damaged. The parchment upon which the research is written seems to have quite a
few gaps, but it is continued at the exact sentence where the first paper abruptly ended. Additionally
the scroll contains a somewhat well preserved drawing of a Dracolich at the bottom of the page.

Much of the Shadowkin's time is spent looking over the three scrolls already collected. From time to time she would expand her search for additional scrolls to the Magisterium Mortis.

A rather young and common looking woman might be seen in the library, reading books. If one might pay attention, he would see that she is reading books such as "The Spellsword's Manifesto", "Scientific Research and Methodology" and "Necromany: Common Misconceptions". On the way in and out of the library, this woman would look very out of place, as if she was not used to Tarkuuls ambience.

An individual in black and white armor bearing the symbol of Kelemvor on their cloak is not something one would expect to step out of the portal next to the Shadow Mage in the Living City. Let alone... two. Yet that is exactly what happened.

The first man met with a dark garbed and hooded individual for a quiet conversation. This man was polite, greeting the other visitors who came by in a most cordial manner. Much later the second man appeared, save for their hair and faces, they would be twins.

They eventually left via portal having not ventured any further into Tarkuul.

There was indeed a new dark, garbed and hooded individual haunting the silences of Tarkuul.. not that this was anything new, for the City of the Living Dead. However, it seemed to draw many people to the gates by the portals. Two priests of Kelemvor, even, yes. Also a few (questionable) women and some others, including an elf and some perhaps planar-blooded? folks. The new figure certainly seemed popular. It haunted the area by the gates more often than other places, though the Kraken also seemed to be a new favorite. If any were curious, the figure rarely showed a face, but it did seem to have pretty pale skin..

When the two Kelemvorites, and other individuals stepped out of the portal to Tarkuul, they would've been greeted by the Alumnus. "Knowledge and Power, seekers." His voice says with a constant monotone. However, his aid would be extended to only in the city. Allowing those whom came to roam around freely, of course. But remains stationed next to the Market Stalls in the center of the City.

A Alumnus of the Magisterium Mortis seems to be taking some interest in the pale-figure. He seems to be offering a somewhat advanced lifestyle for the individual at the Kraken. Attempting to make its life more comfortable while visiting Tarkuul. For what reason though is unknown

The Shadow-kin known as Dmitra can once again be seen in the Living City. This time pulling the remains of a Wyvern into one of the crypts.
With a sigh, she would toss the corpse of the creature on a slab and begin pouring necrotic energy into it.

After a few days away, it seemed the one known commonly as Caron was a breath back in the silence of Tarkuul. Upon gracing the Courts again, he seemed to be covered in snow and pink of face. Why? Who knew? Occasionally, he was visited by the gates again, but not as often as his first arrival. He went back to rooms at the Kraken, delivered a letter to the Magisterium Mortis... and took only a few short errands out of the Enclave.

The City seems to be visited regularly by a short woman dressed in a heavy cloak and worn pointed cap. Clearly an arcanist of some variety, she seems to be little interested in the libraries. She instead seems to walk the grounds of the city drawing sketches, often stopping to capture the various oddities and advancements of the city.

The silent black-masked Tiefling has been seen talking with a certain individual in the Ghastly several times for the past few days. While none could overhear their muted conversations, names are given and gold is exchanged.

There doesn't seem to be any signs of emotion during the conversations, not even any animated reactions to each other's reply. Interestingly enough, the black-masked Tiefling use his kukri as a knife and the tip of his scythe as a fork when a meal is ordered. While some of the patrons fine this strange, they seem uncomfortably silent whenever this Tiefling is around.

However, business continues on at the inn and nothing seems to be of major importance.

The Illuminatus seems to have spent the majority of his day in the Castle's Library. It was obvious he was searching history of Tarkuul. As he was standing by the Historian and going through some of the oldest files. If inquired to the Historian, the Illuminatus was simply completing an assignment from the Headmaster and High Arcanist.

Apparently doing the 'rounds' of inspection, Blackfang almost jumped from his skin as his emergence from the portal was met immediately by a silent, waiting skeletal servant. A magic mouth formed before it's eternal grin, speaking back to him in the disinterested tones of the Illuminatus. His response was simple enough as he turned to the scribe that stood vigil at the gates, "Snikt seeks to know where Ill-oomin-arse-toots-..?" A pause, muttering in goblin darkly. Before returning to common. "...Stupidname. Where does Stupidname linger most?"

Those who venture into the crypts beneath the temple of Velsharoon would see the horrific sight of dismembered limbs occupying the benches surrounding the dais. On the altar a tall humanoid figure is draped in cloth. A needle and thread is nearby as well as a jar with what is obviously a human brain inside it.

Over the last few days the number of corpses in the crypts of Tarkuuls' Vaunted Temple has increased. The larger humanoid limbs were stitched together like patchwork to create the four horrific, twisted mimics of the living that were hanging from the racks, awaiting whatever process would bring them to "life".

A hooded figure traced his steps through the courts. The silence was welcome; he felt no fear from where he was, but to what others would assume from his presence. Footfalls of a lone stranger raised a brow, the sign of life indicated he had entered the Court of the Living. What business he had was his own; he would arrive and depart as he always had. The sentinel watching the building was as inviting as ever, the cold touch of the door matching its scrutinizing gaze. The door parted with the sound of ill oiled metals, the padded clatter of slick black boots marched towards the darkness ahead of him.

"Back to where it began then."

Stillness threatened to suffocate his lungs, a pulling sensation that forced one foot past the next.

"Empty but not forgotten."

The staff of heavy shadowtop echoed throughout the chamber until he reached a series of steps, halting before them only meters away. Hours passed, breaths regulated, methodical as a mentor once instructed him. Shallow currents through the nose leveled his emotions while steady streams exhaled to steel his nerves. Lamenting, the door behind him groaned once more; his visit was not destined to be solitary. The staff tapped once, his regard on the empty space center of the steps ahead of him. The man's chest heaved forwards at the prospect of a visitor, expecting to have the space without interruption, but he made an exception for the newcomer.

The two spoke in familiar regard, one of the two more subservient in their speech. His gaze traced patterns and etches in the air, recalling shapes and indentations in the void that must have held something else. The visitor remained opposite of his view, head lowered as the two exchanged words. A revelation paused him, chin lowering as he debated to himself, ponderous as he breathed steadily, spacing his breaths.

"You must be wondering why I am here."

Weight upon his left foot shifted, giving the staff a break from holding his posture, imagining better places to close off the Newborn Celebration. It was fitting to him, another working of the world. Where one thing begins another ends, and so forth. To him the chamber marked the end of one way of life, and the creation of the new to follow. Shutting tight his eyes, the fledgling memories ignited, offering his flame of thought to the shadows that clung to the stonework. The leader he strived to be directs not through aggression or shows of power, but through protecting those that would choose to follow. In a way they both led one another, in other ways it remained the more literal of interpretations.

Silence accompanied the space of time between them, only to be disrupted by the faint rustling of furs and cloth as he set into unexplained motion, stepping with respect up to the high ground much like a priest might in reverence, though his head bowed none. It was important for him to acknowledge the past, to face it directly. He stooped after reaching the plateau, as if spying a dusty treasure he brushed the stonework in front of him in a manner that suggested it held much more than obvious. Memories flooded him, the hours spent cradling and nurturing a single flame here, the spark of a candle wick that told him of how ignorance can ground reality. Satisfied with his inspection, he rose to his feet without urgency. The world had felt much darker those days.

Letting go of his thoughts, he rose to his feet. He glided forwards two paces, this was where the idol once rested, but he knew it was destined for removal; all of the place was since its creation. Vivid projections lured him to brush his hand along a surface that did not exist. The flat of his palm was exchanged for the tracing lines of his index finger, following through as if along etchings and indentations with meticulous form, regarding two equal spaces without touching the center between them. No words captivated the story the artisan was evoking. Tones of light and shadow, shadows upon shadows, no beauty for he needed light to reveal the secrets held.

Air was drawn in through his nostrils, flaring silently after he had absorbed what comfort he desired. A single nod followed, there is a place for all who are living, all could find harmony before the end. Fresh eyes guided him away towards the upper step.

"I came here when I felt unwelcome by those at large, in the cities and later the forests. A cast-away of society, to this place of deepest blacks. My trips became frequent, a needing obsession that threatened to consume who I am, what I could be, and where I am now."

Standing in skeptic ground, the visitor held a nervous twitch. Even now he felt a desire to return and stay for time immemorial. A haven from the world of scorn around him, it was never meant to be a safe haven. Issued warnings were directed to his visitor, this was no place for them. It was better if they knew little as to why. Mild protest sounded across in rebuttal, but conceded and accepting of the instruction. Urgency had cost him dearly, they would realise why he was withholding the merit behind his concern. A token of trust was offered without explanation, the apple-green gemstone destined to hold more than its artifice. His visitor dispersed into nothingness, silence again claiming his aspect.

It would seem the Governor was intent on his stay, visitors were not refused.

The Headmaster of the Magisterium Mortis takes the newcomer with a curious thought. Instructing a courier to inform the newcomer his audience is accepted with the Headmaster at his earlier convince.

The Governor accepts the courier's message, acknowledging the offer with a returned notice.

Gerald can be seen entering the Tower of the Forsaken, and after a period in the Tower he spends a much longer time in the Crypts.

The Necromaster alongside Watcher Samael appear through a portal in Tarkuuls Castle. Behind them several large and bloodied bags are dragged by an undead servant. After parting ways, the Necromaster orders the bags dragged to the Vaunted Temple and follows shortly thereafter. A scaly tail featuring a large stinger poked out from one of the bags and dragged against the cobblestone.

Wyvern tipping at its finest.

Gerald is seen entering the castle, and the Throne room for a time with a living guardsmen flanking either side of him. They're then joined by the Headmaster and another mage in the Crypt where they exhume one of the corpses inturred. They finally leave Gerald performing a divination over the corpse, a task which takes him all evening and deep into the morning.

With the aid of several undead, the Necromaster oversees that the Wyvern corpses that had been dragged into her temple the previous day were dragged out and laid in a circle just outside the temple. With a black gemstone in hand the Necromaster stood in the center and invoked a spell that consumed the gem. Soon after the Wyverns hissed and growled as they were turned into the unliving. In quick succession the Necromaster then cast Bulls Strength, Endurance and finally released a burst of negative energy, empowering the Wyverns greatly. She turned control of the creatures over to the city and returned to the temple.

// Spells used were Plague of Undead, Negative Energy Burst and BoT variants of Bulls Strength and Endurance.

A strange sort of renewed fervor takes Gerald to the library, and any curious enough to peak would find him hunched over various maps of the world, looking frustratedly for something...

As each day wages on the sounds of tink tink tink tink tinking echos through out the Court of the Undying as the watcher continued his task of forging long swords and nothing but long swords from various materials.

There doesn't seem to be a "Headmaster" of the Magisterium Mortis active. At least not for the last few days. It would be publicly known he is spending a duration of his time in Frozenfar, or "Belenoth" for a project. Any letters will be directed towards him, there.

After a Moorhound ship docks at the Court of the Dead, along with an unknown ship, HoJo steps off the famillar ship. After a brief discussion in the Court of Undying, HoJo retires to his office. He grows visible the next day, in the Court of Living. He makes donations to the Shrine of Umberlee. The donation is the following: A Ruby, A Fire Agate, A Sapphire and a Fire Opal. These materials are commonly found in the Alamber Sea, with the Undead Buccaneer and its chest.

The Headmaster seems to take interest in the Docks. He would be standing there, sketching some rough drafts of the ships. Taking time to observe how many Ships Tarkuul has, and the type of ship. (ie / Battleship, Merchant Ship, e.t.c) The reason for this is unknown. But it would be obvious he has interest in Ships, or sailing.. The Headmaster scribes "Davy Jones" on the bottom of the page and circles it.
