Gazing at the carving in one of the caverns is a dark shadow, hidden by cloak, before it slips away toward L'Obsul. A glint of red hair can be seen, and the shape is drow-sized, but nothing else remarkable is there, unless the figure is stopped.
Then, what is seen is a white mask, featureless save for eyeholes where eyes of a vicious acidic green peer. No mouth hole, only a shapeless nose. The body's figure seems female, or very lithe male.

The scholar looks upon such a carving, makes a carbon copy and wanders off mumbling "those pesky mushroom gnomes! I bet this will scare them!"
...whether he actually knows its true meaning is anyone's guess. (Even for the Scholar himself!)
