Chapter One:
The Letter Four
"Four.
The equivalent of two and two, one and three or six less then ten creates dual parallels running in ninety degree directions commonly known as a "square" or "rectangle." It is an evil number. Its even properties are the bane of tournaments, its shapes boring and predictable... yet it is a strong foundation in every cycle we have come to adjust to. Whether the inventor (or should we say madman) of such a mathematically sound number was aware of its importance at the time is a mystery we shall never know, however, we can most comfortably assume that this creator was the most ingenious villain to grace our studies at this moment in time.
Ofcourse you, the mischievous thief that is reading this, is probably sitting, wondering even about the whereabouts your intellect has gone. Before you throw the book you have most graciously stolen aside, we stress that the above is highly relevant to our observations of politics... and this is why.
For us, the political world is an ever evolving thing; the faces of its matrons (and sometimes even patrons) change with the passage of time. Twice in histories past, even the name of which the politics govern has changed! But even in such rapidly evolving environments there is always structure; binding substances that creates ground rules, foundations even, that dictate and control the evolution process of Edonil's (and its predecessor's) politics:
The first and foremost foundation is the will of the Spiderqueen; our saviour, our divine dictator who cares for our existence in her own malevolent way. We have no need to expand on this any further as from birth we are taught the lessons of our Divine Queen; it is culturally branded in our minds our connection with our divine matron, as aggressively hostile as it may seem to outside sources.
The second foundation however is very subtle; it is a concept that dictates our understanding of even the most basic principles of mathematics which unexpectedly creates a defence that enables it to be so easily overlooked unless one dwells upon it. The second foundation our matriarch-dominated audience... is infact the cycles of odds and evens in politics.
Throughout the histories of Edonil and its predecessors Ultrinnan and Udos Dro'xun, our politics have always been dominated by the ruling Noble Houses ranging from only two at once to six at a time. It comes to no surprise to you the audience that we are gripped by a lust for knowledge that, in order to get it, we have borrowed, stolen and manipulated the strands of personas in the ever expanding tree of fate, allowing us to see the world through many different eyes and hear the world from many different perspectives. It was only through such meticulously bizarre methods (and one of many interpretations) that we had come to such a simplistic conclusion: that the connection between the number of Noble Houses predicts the fortunes of our settlements.
In the past during times of great prosperity, there has always been either three or five Noble Houses; both of them odd numbers. If one wishes recent evidence, one can say that we are now in a time of prosperity. If one delves further into the past before the coming of Baenre to Ultrinnan, there were five dominant Noble Houses which many of the more ancient members of our society will regard as "the good old times." The connection that exists between prosperity and odd numbers is strange, and we have concluded that it is the unfairness of the odd number that attracts those of the Drow psyche; Drow are cowardly creatures by nature and cannot ignore such unfairness when it presents itself to directly exploit into our favour. Compare it if you will to an addictive drug; we desire unfairness to exploit just as we desire power, wealth or food which creates ambition. This ambition then leads on to prosperity as we so willingly indulge our selfish desires...
But a break in this theorised chain can spell disaster for all.
Even numbers, such as the number four, are most exactly as its name suggests; even. Even conditions create fairness; the polar opposite of unfairness. Now, if unfair conditions are so appealing to the Drow Psyche, then it is safe to assume that fair conditions, evenness, is appallingly uninviting to Drowish nature. Ask any Noble Edonil citizen their opinion of the settlement L'Obsul and you will come to the same conclusion as above. Even looking internally to Edonil and its predecessors will reveal that the influence of evens has spelled decline for our settlements. Under the iron grip of the noxious plague and under the thumb of Baenre, Ultrinnan in its decline was ruled by four Noble Houses. Prior to the coming of Baenre, the amalgamation of House Arabett into House Vandree created an even number and led to troubling times that was in turn restored by the arrival of houses Xull'dvharcan and later Lle'isgar.
If such ancient history is deemed irrelevant; history corrupted by time and lack of documentation, then we instruct thee look into recent history post Ultrinnan's fall. In recent history the settlement now known as Edonil was ruled by two houses: Tinnerai and Ussen'dvhid. These were undoubtedly times of major decline, and although one can secretly play the blame game as to whose fault it was, noone can deny the influence of the existing even number on its outcome.
Now, do pay mind these are merely just observations by one of many personas but to you, our thievingly inquisitive audience, we leave this final message: For now Edonil is at a stage of an unfair peak... and with history on our side to guide our predictions if an even number of houses ever occurs, ensure that the even number is destroyed quickly and efficiently to ensure Edonil's ongoing and future success.
End of Chapter One."
