Post subject:  Question about 'time'

Disclaimer: I'm sure the answer to this is somewhere in the forums, but I have so far been unable to locate it... so if it is, and anyone knows the link pls. reply with it!

Time: How is it calculated? I saw the marker here that keep up with the current game-year, but what is a 'day' in-game compared to a 'day' of RL? What is the IG-Hour : RL-Hour ratio?

I'm having trouble figuring out exactly how long my 'hours/level' spells are supposed to last.. it seems they don't last very long at all... especially my "24-hour" duration spells definitely are ~not~ lasting 24-hrs. and i'm a bit mixed-up in the brain on it.

IS there a thread/FAQ on IG-Time somewhere that I am just not finding?

(sorry for the newbie-questions) 8)

IG year = RL year in 1:1 ratio.
1 hour IG = 1 hour RL

For the purposes of spellcasting it's not the real hours and days.

1 round = 6 seconds (real life seconds)
1 turn = 10 rounds
1 hour = 2 turns

Well this may help and this regarding how real life and game time work. For spell durations I believe (but someone please correct me if I am wrong) follow the standard NWN round/turn/hour ratio.

EDIT: Just got beat to it by Dead.

that's surprising to me

if Game-hours = Real-hours...
1-round = Standard D&D measure of 6-seconds
1-turn = Standard D&D measure of 10-rounds

shouldn't 1 IG Hour = 10 RL minutes? maybe cut that in half if it's too long and have 1 IG Hour = 5 RL minutes.. at least your level 3 Bull Strength potion would get you through a combat. ;)

Why so short? Was there a specific reason behind the choice to use the NWN base spell durations?

[edit]
-btw... thanks for the info... I was a bit confused why folk would IC tell me about things that happend RL yesterday and say IC it happened yesterday..

Follow-up Question... do the day/night | Sunrise/Sunset times also match the 1:1 time? I thought I was seeing sunrises and sunsets happen IG over the course of a couple hours of play...

Basically for narrative/RP matters time goes by RL days/months/years. It's just mechanics that goes by the time dilation (ie 1 turn = 1 RL minute, 1 round = 6 RL seconds, etc). I think it's to make things easier, otherwise you'd have people sitting around for RL hours with some spells.

True, though you can set the game-hours to be anything you want... having a 1:1 / IGh our :RL hour would just be silly, I definitely agree.

But, the reverse of that... 2 minutes is not a long time for a spell that is in theory supposed to up for an 'hour'

-surely this is a discussion that's been had before... I can't possibly be the first person to offer up 2-minute game hours is bit on the short side...

My personal favorite is 1-game hour = 15 RL minutes <-- that's fantastic. I've seen that only 1 place, and it was pretty darn cool... of course they also made mandatory rest time-out to be 1 RL hour.. which sucked *hah* but got to take the good with the bad. ;)

I'd be curious to know what past official replies were to this topic. I will do some digging through the forums here and see if I can find it... if anyone who remembers when it was discussed last can call it up, or point me to that discussion, I would love the help.

In-game hours 'are' ten real life minutes long, so game mechanics are based off of that.
For the sake of time progression for RP, one in-game day equals one real life day, unless dictated otherwise by a DM, for an event.

oh, hmm.. wait, sorry to sound confused.

I thought 1 IG-Hour was 2 RL minutes? alright. time to break out the stopwatch.

Thank you all for the helpful replies!

*update*

Barkskin (6) lasts 12 minutes. Which at 1-hr per level duration makes each game-hour 2-minutes.
Shouldn't it last 60 minutes at 10 RL minutes per 1 IG-Hour?

[edit]

(( not that it's a problem... just curious.))

Or unless a player says so. A player can fast forward time as well for himself.
