The idea has been tossed around a few times that I can recall, but I would like to bring it back with the recent attention with the Tarkuul/Shadowscape thread. One of my own favorite opportunities on Ravenloft: Prisoner's of the Mist (Another server on NWN) is when they host what's called a "New Character Week, or "New Character Event". Essentially, the players opt to select a brand new character concept and en masse, with almost the entire server population, play within a certain hub for a brief period of time. In the guise of new beginnings, players come together with fresh characters and enjoy refreshingly random encounters. This has the added benefit of allowing DM's to focus their attention on a flourishing hub, providing mini-events and helping to create new storylines with an excited playerbase. Now, in fairness, there are numerous differences between PoTM and Amia, and to try to create a wholeheartedly dedicated event in the same way that they do would cause more stress than its worth. However... I believe this is a wonderful opportunity to try out in one of our most isolated settlements. ~~~~ Shadowscape A Broken City Goal: Interested players decide to create new character or group concepts for Shadowscape, with the aim to gather enough people to create a neat, thriving hub and chapter-based story all in unison. - A DM (or number) willing to oversee the 'event' can volunteer to come up with the right stimulus and circumstances. With a bit of planning, this can start at a specific time with regular and frequent mini-events. This opportunity allows for the interested DM's to shape Shadowscape into a dynamic, multi-faceted hub for at least a temporary period of time. The DM would be encouraged to flesh out NPC's, prepare a few mysteries and enemies, internal competing interests and potential factions and social events. - To encourage new characters and to allow them the ability to flourish together and outside of the shadow of existing characters and relationships, I would recommend that all existing characters (With the exception of Shadowscape Citizens, maybe) be temporarily and OOCly barred from Shadowscape until the period is over (Usually 2-3 weeks). While this may sound harsh, it's to encourage people to try out new concepts that are based in Shadowscape themes instead of relying upon traditional heroes. This lack of ability to frequently travel to and from the city allows for an enhanced feeling of isolation IC, as well. Any problems that come up have to be solved by those in the city, with rare exceptions. New concepts also encourage players to break out of cliques and to interact with others using fresh ties and relationships. - The benefit of this mini-campaign is that players and DM's alike can enjoy a refreshing experience where many members of the community volunteer to all-at-once create new characters, groups, and stories that all fit within an already existing, recently updated, and relatively unused city. Shadowscape is a perfect place to pick due to its isolation from the rest of the server and its starkly unique theme. - Those interested should say so here, and if there's enough interest folks can be encouraged to muster group concepts and DM's might be inspired to create a series of micro-plots. Importantly, there would be no guarantees or responsibilities to continue playing. It should be a fun experience, and players would in all likelihood naturally continue to play their characters after the period of time if they enjoyed it. But atmospheric, temporary characters should also be welcome! (And if you've created them with a temporary mindset, don't be afraid to let the characters permadie either!) Potential Character/Group Ideas:- Private Investigator - Bare knuckle Boxing Ring - Criminal refugee - Murderer, Psychopath - Shadowdancer student (omg, could you imagine full and active noob classes?) - Master Thief & Heist Crew - Occult wizard - Enforcer - Bodyguard - Bartender, Waitress, Lady-of-the-Night - Smuggler, Shadow-Delivery - Estranged Doctor - Merchant family dealing in questionable goods - Monster Hunter - Any other noir, dark, shadowy concept.

Questions, ideas, clarifications are also welcome! Discuss away. If it gets enough traction, I'll put up a poll so we can see if there are enough interested players to want to try it out. And if there's a DM willing, we can try to get an idea for when it might take place.

There may be someone already working on something like this...! Alternate Beginnings don't have a very good record of ever finishing or getting good closure, but the ideas tossed back and forth may serve to water and feed the DM who is scheming, nonetheless.

I don't intend on adding a new character to the stable, but Luc would participate as a Three Steps instructor if there was activity to be had.

The concept is intriguing!
While I /really hate/ to sound like a poo-pooer, I'm going to be a bit selfish here and say, telling players (and yes I admit I mean myself) that have spent the better part of 3 years to establish themselves into even a moderate amount of influence, and usually without ANY sort of DM oversight or help, that suddenly "sorry but you are barred from your home while all these other PCs get attention and every opportunity to be more influential than you are when you get back" just... well, sucks.
Now I do not want to rain on anything that will bring more activity to Shadowscape. And I can see how this could be done without damaging the afore mentioned players. If the staff is willing to keep that in mind then I'm 100% on board. Another "however", I'm really not sure how you ICly tell my current PC to remain uninvolved in such an event though. Luckily she has reasons to be hands-off atm.

Yeah. I used "Alternate Beginnings" as a name because folks are used to it, but in reality it'd be something more akin to PoTM's New Character Event. And it would fully acknowledge the temporary nature of some characters.

Oooh no no, Anatida! I think, honestly, that characters already heavily invested in Shadowscape should be included still. They would be a large level difference from the other citizens, and would probably be asked to be responsible with that-- but the aim isn't to push out characters who have invested into the city.
In fact, the aim is the exact opposite. It's trying to generate an actual player atmosphere in Shadowscape that extends beyond the Dancer Academy (While I do admire it, I'm saddened that there isn't often other activity there).

Then I would love that! I'm all for that! I want to help! I've been trying to push other PCs into a PC militia (like Cordor's STU), and trying to find someone interested in taking over the dark and seedy underbelly that Dusty pointed out in an event! Bring 'em on.

Ultimately, the reason why I proposed this kind of OOC focus on new, thematic Shadowscape characters is to try to jump-start an actual Shadowscape culture. If the upcoming events were to go on as normal, I would expect to see a number of foreign-but-interested characters come to Shadowscape for the duration of the plot, enjoy it, and then depart back to their normal hubs. As a result, it ends up being somewhat damaging.
There's a balance somewhere between allowing already invested characters and encouraging new ones. I just think that 'closing the doors' to the outside will help encourage people to actually try something new, instead of just having their main character who hasn't interacted with Shadowscape save the day. This is as much an attempt to encourage the development of a new hub & culture as it is trying to encourage players to break out of their cliques and circles and interact with fresh takes.

A player shot me some concerns and ideas and I thought they were pretty good:
If a lot of players are really excited about this new upcoming monstrous plotline and want to play with their mains and introduce foreign characters, perhaps the 'Alternate Beginnings' period, so to speak, would be a separate, more level-appropriate mini-storyline.
After the period is over, which wouldn't be longer than 2-3 weeks, everything returns back to normal. The new characters continue playing if they want, and outsiders can come in and enjoy the city alongside them.

The only way I could get behind closing off the city to outsiders is if it was entirely IC. Like, for some reason the planar rift and ley node and portal from Tarkuul all just stop working, the city is literally cut off from everywhere, and nobody can get in until the problem is figured out and resolved. I'm not sure if that's what you're suggesting, or if you were envisioning some kind of OOC declaration that "this area is for new characters only until further notice" sort of thing, but if the latter, that would be disastrous. It would give people who aren't interested in making a new character *less* reason to interact with Shadowscape, not more. You'd end up with people whose tastes are more transient getting super excited about their new characters for a few weeks, and then moving on to other things, because that's what they do. (Not a value judgement; I don't condemn that sort of RP at all.) Meanwhile, characters who have been around for years and who wouldn't mind learning that there's something of interest to them in Shadowscape after all would be forbidden from contributing, and have no choice but to just shrug and ignore it. The net result would be a fun month for a few people, and then back to dead-zone business as usual.

Yeah, Liz-- agreed. It would have to be an actual IC reasoning why it was 'barred.' The reason I mentioned it in the OOC context first was to underscore the OOC importance of having it at all.
But in order for it to actually work, it would need to actually be IC, too. Could be the start of a cool mystery.

I love Alternate Beginnings despite its many problems and deficiencies.
I think it was Kjetta's Gladiator Plot that first introduced Alternate Beginnings to Amia. I never spectated the fights myself, but from what I understood by scanning the forum, it was at least a moderate success due to being centred in Amia, and thus centering on an Amia-related storyline, which readily tied the characters to the setting. The subsequent Alternate Beginnings seemed to strive for the exotic and foreign; new elements that could be assimilated into our setting by means of the Alternate Beginnings. Only Silent's event comes to mind at the moment, in which I took part myself, so correct me if I'm terribly mistaken.
Alternate Beginnings can offer a nice change of pace and be great fun while they last, but in general they seem to be relatively short-lived, as the players have soon grown disinterested in their characters. The characters seem to be offered no purpose and motive to continue their journey in Amia; there's no reason for them to spread their wings and fly the nest, as it were, the nest being the safety of the DM-monitored campaign.
Why are characters successful in the first place? Some people are afflicted with OCD and altitism, such as myself, and I've always acknowledged and accepted my place as feedstock for the factions and plots of the people with the dedication to follow through on their characters and create meaningful, long-term roleplay. But if the Alternate Beginnings were successful, I think they would do just that: create meaningful, long-term roleplay. So what, by this definition, makes a successful character? I believe the freedom to be inspired by your own idea and genius. To create the concept from scratch, become enthralled by it and dig ever deeper. Instead of tethering the characters to a theme or origin, you need to break the mould in order to let self-imposed affections and self-interested motives flourish.
So my two suggestions as to how to make a good Alternate Beginnings: 1) Make it open to interaction in Amia itself, let the characters forge alliances with outsiders to the actual Alternate Beginnings plot, but offer them a joint purpose. This has pretty much been said already, so I'm just repeating the thread. 2) Give as much freedom to the character creation as possible, the objective of the Alternate Beginnings functioning primarily as an incentive for that.

Barring and closing off Shadowscape for the sake of this campaign seems a bad idea, whether done IC or OOC.
As for making Shadowscape centric characters: Go for it. I don't think anyone's ever rolled a true blue Shadowscape Native. Aside from maybe the old Shadowbournes.

I definitely sympathize that any notion of barring entry is something that Amian's are relatively unfamiliar with, and observe with due caution. On PoTM, it happens every six months or so to the entire main region! And you either roll a new character able to play in the hubs, or your existing characters play outside of the main realm.
It's a much stricter policy with larger scope-- and it really works. There are a fair few players who devote themselves to single characters and get frustrated with the two weeks or so that they can't play them in the main areas-- but they can still play those characters elsewhere (And often do).
What I'm suggesting here is only Shadowscape, and closing it off doesn't really impact much of anything. Furthermore, those who don't wish to be a part of it anyway are impacted in no tangible manner. They simply play as they have been. Characters already invested in Shadowscape would remain inside (which is already a large concession from the regular New Character Event model), and it would only last two weeks or so.
There's merit to closing the area off and trying to encourage fresh starts. It's a small period of collective beginnings, and you don't want those characters to be shadowed in their mechanical inadequacy, as well as their outright lack of connections to other well-established PC's.
Mind, the entire ordeal could be done with a big, collective push from interested players to begin playing their Shadowscape characters all at once. It's still possible without the barring, it's still possible without a DM even. It just loses the exciting feeling of enjoying entirely new characters in an active environment.
In the old days, we didn't really need anything like it. I could walk down the street and interact with strangers who held all manner of surprises. Nowadays, however, if my character doesn't know everything pertinent about the character, it's likely that I do as a player. Amia loses its surprising, refreshing appeal.
In an ideal community, I would just ask for volunteers and no one would insert their old characters into the fray for the two-week period. Realistically, if there's not a limitation though, older characters will almost certainly arrive and then the experience loses the feeling of being involved in something new at all. I read time and time again that people are frustrated and expressing difficulty in breaking out of or through character cliques. I think this is a really healthy exercise for the server, personally.

It's not really barring it off for the sake of the campaign, I guess. It would be barring it off for the sake of player immersion into something new. For probably the first time in a very long time.
Ultimately, if the idea makes people so uncomfortable, I'll just have to continue without it and see if I can muster folks to still all-at-once try to create a bunch of Shadowscape natives. But it will without a doubt lose some of the freshness that a closed environment would enable.

I'm totally new to this but every time I see an alternate beginnings thread I really wanna join in.
I made a new character I've played like four times, and she was hanging around Shadowscape anyways, and her concept/background absolutely fits this mold. She's only level 5. I haven't done anything with her so she's still a very clean slate. If I'd be allowed to still join like that I'd love to and I won't log her in again until this gets going. Unless all of the characters need to have come from the same place at the same time...? I didn't even finalize her background so I can add in shit as needed to fit the rest of the group

If an Alt Beginnings was run in Shadowscape, I (personally) wouldn't foresee shutting down the entire city while it happens. I wouldn't let that stop you from doing it, though. Shadowscape natives would be interesting. You got folks coming from a city that was originally on the Prime and now is on the Shadowplane, due entirely to the prowess of the sort of folks that run the Academy in town, and now survive due to them, shade-creatures, and the work of the Shadowbourne family. To say that Shadowscape is a town respects talent and runs like a meritocracy might almost be an understatement: you have to be rough, tough, sturdy enough to survive the plane and work with the travellers that come through on a regular basis. You've also got people that might be genuinely overwhelmed by life on the Prime Material Sensory Overload style.

While it's true that some players get slightly miffed, it's usually only a handful and they can still play as they like. It's widely received on that server as a good thing, and their numbers will spike from 20-30 up to 40-50 during the NCW. I know a lot of folks even wait to come back until it happens. BUT, you're right to point out that there are simply differences between Amia and PoTM. Their culture may respond fairly well to it, and they do have the Mists as a plot device to help explain influxes of people. While I would wholeheartedly advocate the attempt, I don't think that the barring entry idea is really quintessential to the whole thing. The availability and interest of a DM and the ability for interested players to coordinate is farrrr more important. As long as a healthy majority of players are noob-toons, I think they'll still generally feel useful and inspired in comparison to Epic toons arriving.

In defence of Alternate Beginnings - the ones based around Amia and exist for reasons of cultural niche have actually done pretty well. Like, yeah, a lot of the PCs have disappeared, but those that stuck around end up carrying a mark of the event that spawned them, and they kind of stand out as special. Hell, people have even brought them back from their archives because of this quality, which cannot be freely replicated. I speak specifically of the Evermeet nobles thing in Winya, one of which only recently departed (and she didn't go quietly), one is doing stuff and a couple others are kinda lurking. There was a dwarf one, which I attempted and failed to join and thus contributed to its non-success, much to my despair. So yeah, if there is some way to mark these Shadowscape PCs as "limited edition" so to speak, by way of how the group comes about... Like, maybe the institutions do some sort of mojo (I am now literally picturing several random citizens waking up after weird dreams with The Mark of the Outsider), or just sink money/resources into creating an investigation/hunter-killer team or something. Common folk suddenly developing shadow affinity in hitherto unknown numbers and intensity. Obviously some kind of DM support is needed, but they don't really require hand-holding to get along.

I'm glad to see this got so much interest. I'm always on board for alternate beginnings, because it gives players a chance to have roots in the server setting, which usually leads to more RP one way or another.
Regarding "closing off" Shadowscape for plots, I think we can have the best of both worlds if we come at it from another angle. My suggestion a while back was that we could occasionally have mini-events where we say OoCly [Lv's 5-15] and so on. I think the playerbase would be a lot more accepting of that than we give ourselves credit for. We know our own patterns. X Thing happens. PC's respond. Eventually, it's a screen full of fully buffed epics, standing idly, waiting for the DM to spawn more monsters. That's not to disparage anyone's plot or anyone's IC reaction, but it's very often the case. Alternate beginnings and limited-scope events allow the DM to better plan, challenge, and tailor the story to what he or she knows is going to show up. That's not to say that we won't eventually have our more established characters ride in like cavalry, but for the sake of building a story, I'm all for a few events in this much larger plot being "closed" to certain levels or limited to alternate beginnings that later include all PC's. My mind boggles at how a DM could give the impression of gothic/survival horror in a setting that involves both a lv 5 PC and a lv 30 PC, without making one of them feel useless. To that end, maybe the "first night" and "patient zero" situations are experienced by lowbies who don't or can't immediately phone-in for help. I had entertained the idea that the Ley and portals would stop working for whatever reason, if only at certain times, to allow for situations to play out as they may without everyone from A suddenly showing up on B.
If my own epic Shadowscape-involved PC were to get involved with this, my aim would be for him not just to "beat the baddies." Instead, I would try to make a goal that either involves some lower-level PC's or NPCs to help him figure something out, affect some NPC's in the setting, or investigate something on his behalf, or weird-them out, subvert them, or maybe be antagonistic in a way that doesn't involve mechanically beating them(at least not as the end goal). Other than that, I'd much rather be a set piece as it were, and experience the plot as someone with goals ulterior to immediately trying to "end" the plot. Maybe that's just me. But anything that is more inclusive and fun and immersive for all players and PC's is A-OK in my book. So maybe we can have things like this, that don't necessarily mean shutting off the city and don't necessarily mean that it hits a chokepoint with max-range PC's forcing the DM to pull out all the stops and/or artificially slow down the plot. (Largely joking) examples:
-A strange virus is spreading rapidly. A group of common PC's must help Barry and Jill investigate the outbreak in a mansion infested with zombies. (Alt Beginnings folk w/o portal wands) -A "Hunt" is advertised and organized regarding a mysterious creature found gnawing on a corpse in a noble's privy before fleeing out the window. (Levels 8-15, 9 PM) -The first party finds and slays the beast, only to find clues that point to there being an entire hive of these creatures. A call for backup goes out. (15+, 10 PM) -The Shadowbournes host a masquerade. This might be a good time to figure out the who's-who of the city. Rumor has it spies will be at play here, too. ("Normal" all levels, largely non-combat oriented, though who know after a few glasses of punch...) -Barry and Jill gather the original folks. Apparently an old man named Joel and a young girl named Ellie need rescue from a mob of man-eating myconids. (Alt Beginning folk) -Beldor inadvertently [REDACTED] the gate to [REDACTED] and all the [REDACTED] flood into the city, looking for [REDACTED]. (25+ and gods help you).

I'd love to show up in Shadowscape more often with my existing PC, especially that she can't visit Three Steps Academy anymore, it would be good to show in the city and connect with some new shadowdancers and help them too

I remember concluding my alt beginnings campaign! I don't think any of the characters lasted much beyond a week once it concluded (quite a few of them were killed, though.) I'm tempted to get involved as a player but I don't think I have the time.

Eh, I might jump into this if rarely played existing characters with no ties were allowed. I have a bunch of epics that I basically just got into epics and that's that, they have no affiliations and aren't even known anywhere.

From the sounds of it, there seems to be a fair amount of resistance to the idea of barring anyway-- and I think any further conversation on it encourages debate instead of excitement toward concepts.
I would just hope that if it did take off and if new folks did want to make Shadowscape natives that any interested DM would take into account the massive disparity between the new characters and the max-leveled. We're basically just gonna have to trust that, and see what happens.
So in effect, it will be more like a regular Alternate beginnings than a New Character Event.

But DI did hit on some good points. Some great food for thought, for any would-be DM interested in running Shadowscape stuff.

All this did inspire me and makes me want to try out RP'ing a Seer or some sort! Sounds fun ^^ I don't know if I'll add a new toon to my list, but I will definitely pass by Shadowscape more often is "life" stirs down there.

Yeah! Seems like there's enough interest at the moment. I'll write it up when I get home.

Haven't forgotten, just been a little busy lately. I'll make the additions shortly, and open it up for concept brainstorming.

I would most likely be interested, I have a character concept that I have had banging around in my head which would be appropriate. I have put off playing him so far due to lack of time and having to focus on Whurak and the dwarves, but I would be up for a newbie I can play casually with others. Would fit in with the "Bare Knuckle Boxing Ring" idea in the original post, but he could end up anywhere.

I too have actually been working on a concept that would fit in quite well, here. I'm pretty excited about it

Okay guys! By my count, there's about 15 different people interested, with about five of them being existing characters. A bit of DM interest (as DM's), and I would also expect more interest as concepts start to be posted and fleshed out. So I think it's a success thus far.
I'm still fairly busy with work, so I'm going to be a bit slow and unreliable as an organizer, though I have every intention of playing.
I think we should enter a concept brainstorming phase, now. I suggest posting brief character concepts either here, or if Anatida is allowing, make something IC on the Shadowscape Life thread she opened in the PC story section (Cue all those dark and brooding noir monologues, ohyeeah).
I'll write my concept up when I get home from work, hopefully. And I encourage others to do so, too! Get in touch with one another if your concepts mesh and you want to make group efforts. I also highly encourage folks to consider morally questionable ideas that can provide neat evolving conflict, too! The atmosphere should be neat!

I'm more than willing! That's part of the reason I made the thread. If you want help organizing give me a shout, Hackums. Also, new areas should be in soon that the DMs can use, but let me know if you have any specific requests for areas.

I'm pretty much open to most things, so for now I'll post my possible characters here for others to see in case something would mesh with their own ideas.
I have a lvl 25 human fighter (yes, pure fighter), whom I've pictured and played as a morally ambiguous mercenary. He did once hang with the B.L.A.C.K. crew for a time.
Then I have a very, very old character of mine, a lvl 30 gnome monk specialized in spell resistance training (meaning epic SR feats up to a total of 52 SR). He follows Savras and has been here and there a bit.
Then there's a lvl 30 fighter/WM/DD duergar who might happen to pop up in a place like Shadowscape, considering he's done mercenary work on the surface. A complete Laduguerite though, so not much in terms of emotions.
Also, even if they are all epic, you have to understand that they're still MY epic characters, meaning most barely-epic slightly tuned builds will kick their ass.

I've been sick and busy, but I don't wanna let this fall into the background. Anatida, you wanna pick up my slack and organize this? All we basically need is a bit of excitement, a date, and some encouraged concept building. Once it gets going, it should take care of itself.

Tormak is watching for people to be online! He's already popped in a time or two to get things started. He's mostly around in the evenings US central time.
I've been hanging out with Iim'mur'ss, and being out in the city instead of just in the Academy. It might help if I knew what other names to look for on the player list.

Would it too be possible to set specific times for "meet-up" or everyone can post their usual playtime/schedule. I'll be around as Philomena Alëan'dath. My usual time is EST Evenings for now, though it might be subject to change with my work schedule. She's a fresh toon, so if anyone wants to get together and have shadowy hunting/leveling RP as well, that'd could be fun LB
