When your character is just sitting around town shooting the breeze or otherwise not in any danger, consider debuffing rather than prancing about lit up like a Christmas tree.

Many folks play NWN because it's an old game with low requirements - their computers are dated or they're on internet that simply is awful due to location and it's easy for those of us with up to date computers and nice links to forget that. Visual buffs often lag others (sometimes even those with great computers and links), so it's a nicety if we remember that and debuff them if they're not needed. Plus killing unneeded server load is never a bad thing.

Just consider this the next time you hit town for some roleplay after a dungeon crawl and there's no pressing need to keep yourself buffed.

As far as remember, Amarice once said that buffs are not the main reason of lags when lots of characters are around.

Yes and no, Dead. They do not cause overall lag to the server, but they do create lag for the individual player depending upon his or her rig.

Lots of buffed people in one area (heck, lots of people) still give me a lot of lag. I've generally avoided in-game events with lots of people in one area.

Kohlingen has that row of outdoor merchants that always makes my computer cry when they come in visual range. I call it The Gauntlet. I wish they were somewhere else.

Oddly, I have no problem playing more recent games.

I lag when monsters are spawning as I'm running. Lag is not quite what it is. I "hitch". And in large groups, obviously. The West Cordor invasion was hell. I just spammed shit, and hope something went through. Couldn't get into my inventory half the time. Jumping all over the screen. Oddly enough, the Wharftown attack 5 or so days ago was almost entirely lag free. I could move, attack, access inventory, etc. I don't know what the difference was in terms of monsters, how things were spawned, or whatever. But both had a metric shit ton of people, and NPCs, and the Wharftown one was really, really smooth. Greatly enhanced my killing pleasure. Thanks for that. :)

I used to crash when the ultravision/true seeing vfx was displayed, but with my new computer, that doesn't happen- instead I get bad combat lag. Not sure what to do about it, or if there is anything that can be done about it. I think everyone has to deal with something annoying when playing.

There's a reason I stay prepared. I fear the Gods.

That statement is very, very false in both senses of the meaning lag for NWN.

There's two kinds of lag, server lag and client lag. Server lag affects /everyone/ and client lag affects the player witnessing it only.

Every single buff on the server contributes to server lag. Each buff has a duration which has to be assigned into the system and counted down each increment of time. In that sense, every buff contributes to /server lag/ which is lag for everyone, even if your PC is nowhere near the bloody event and is alone killing goblins in the Frontier somewhere. 50 people buffed to the hilt drag the hell out of the system for everyone. (Hell, being partied in separate areas contributes notably to server lag as the server has to constantly keep track and render to all members the locations of others.)

Every buff with a visual contributes greatly to client lag, which is why when the game pops in a character lit up like a Christmas tree (or 10) your computer has a seizure. Even with a great link and computer, 1 character lit up with a complement of buffs can cause a pause simply because NWN is very bad at what it does.

Sitting around Cordor or Kohlingen or Tarkuul doing nothing but chatting about the weather? Not really needed to have buffs on.

Personally, I think excessive spell visuals look kinda... tacky. This is going to sound harsh, but it reminds me of countless death knights prancing around Stormwind with the Warglaives of Azzinoth.

This is completely subjective, of course, just the way I see it.

I see what you're trying to do! You're trying to get everyone to be unprepared!

^ that.

But also, I can sympathize. Sometimes Krin and Aiseth will have epic impromptu duels, where Krin usually loses, but we end up both disconnecting via lag-locking because we both casted time stop or some spell that was way too awesome for the server. It has a lot to do with the magic.

I killed Krin with a BBoD once. It was amazing.

Can this be a "Funny ways we've killed Krin" thread, where he counters with the funny ways he killed us back?

Exactly right. "Better be safe than sorry" as we fingerwavers say.
