Anyone else feel like people are overly generous with height, on Amia? I've come across multiple non-athletic characters, who are paragons of intellect and such rather than a big, tough body with a sword, and they're well over six feet tall. The bulky guys? They can reach seven feet. I once saw a ten foot tall half orc, even...
What do you feel the average height is on Amia, amongst the various races?
I mostly play Hin, ya'll might as well be 10 foot.

It's pretty much race-relative, and in mechanics it doesn't affect much lest you want to enforce the fact that being bigger matters. By mechanics I mean that the only real ruling in it is the size difference (tiny, large, small, etc). I personally like to confirm whatever I feel iffy with the DMs, but there are cases and cases. I don't care much about it, since it's all part of the RP, and if somebody tries something based on the size, I'll have fun mentioning that they are still medium sized character and combo-yudo them out of the map with a "little" kobold.
Yes, this is a very common thing. I've seen numerous characters with heights that would theoretically push them over into the Large category. Personally I think it's ridiculous, but if they want to play completely anatomically incorrect characters, that's kinda their perogative. They're conveniently almost always dragon-blooded or cheese-build earth genasi anyway. And hey, if people aren't playing their stats correctly, why play their height correctly? I do make a point of having them smack their heads into -every- door in Bendir Dale though, repeatedly. (Apologies to any people who -actually- RP their ridiculous height correctly).
The Big Show is 440 pounds and 7'0" Tall. Anything over that is just ridiculous. Plain and simple.

That sums it for me too. There are tables for d&d heights, perhaps people could try and respect them a little. It isn't game breaking though, and as long as people RP their characters accordingly and have the stats to show it, I am not making a case of it.

Agreed. I don't make a public case of it either, but I can't deny that seeing 9-foot characters wandering about does influence my decisions on who to seek out RP with. Characters who are implausible and cheesy in one way tend to be implausible and cheesy in other ways.

I make it a point not to mention a specific height and avoid the issue altogether. Luca is "tall and lanky". Talyne was "short and chubby". Vale is just "normal". Get the image across, doesn't get into the weirdness of implausible numbers for height/weight. Female characters are just as often implausibly light-weight as males are overly tall.

That's what I usually do, yeah. Except with Saya, where she is indeed super light and petite. I followed two different race tables and set a number in between, judging that she had the race/heritage/stats to be that short/light. Even with that, though, I have met human characters that made her fat and tall in comparison.. which is definately weird. So you are right, the opposite is also true, and would be avoided if people either followed the tables available for them, or simply said "Short / Petite / Slim / Big / etc."
LOL with both of these tables Saya does not end up the way she was intended
I used wikipedia to check what was the lowest/highest for average heights/weights of drows and halflings. I picked the highest for halflings and the lowest for drows (shortest elf), and then found some sort of middle ground in middle (if I remember right). Figured if one of your ancestors' is 2 1/2 ft, that it warrants using drows for comparison
4'7" max for the height and 90lbs for the weight was what I got. If I do the math right with these charts, she ends up being average sized for a moon elf and pretty much overweight? lol
Screw maths, I should have just left "Petite" "Way shorter than average" "Has the weight that goes with it"
Forgotten realms wiki numbers:
Drow Average Height -> 5'4" to 6' Drow Average Weight -> 130 - 170 lbs
Halfling Average Height -> 2'8" to 3'4" Halfling Average Weight -> 27 - 42 lbs
Then again, I realize now this might have been male sizes?
Forgotten Realms wikipedia - sounds as legit to me as any other random book/site to be honest
There are probably more than a hundred of these pieces of trees <.<
OH well, edited the forum bio (at least that part). Can't do anything about the IG one Hope people will just read what I wrote beside these evil numbers.. screw numbers.
Drow Average Height -> 5'4" to 6' Drow Average Weight -> 130 - 170 lbs
Lol whut?
I thought drow topped out around 5'8 and bottomed at 4'11 or so. They're supposed to be freakin diminutive by elf standards. (which meant that the 6' female I used to play was an utter freak. Yes, she was meant to be. I doubt anyone clicked tho)

Not to mention that the girls tend to be bigger and brawnier than the boys too.

I feel like this is something that has evolved over time with Amia, and continues to. Every male characters wants to be the tallest and the biggest. The 'tallest' keeps getting pushed up. first it was six feet, then seven, now its pushing eight, and so on. Maybe I'm crazy though!
It's the very gradual attempt to overtake Kohlingen. Soon adventuring PCs will be tall enough to just step over the walls.
So Kohlingen must begin building taller walls. NOW.

I think it makes the normal humans look better when they keep up mechanically with the outlandish races and physiques. Usually do, and then some more; it's an excellent race.

To clear up drow stuff, in FR drow (average) height is between 4'7"(140cm) and 5'5"(165cm) (for both males and females, the only case among elves [and most races] that the female has the same min and max heights.) this means that drow in FR are around the height that elves are in almost all other D&D versions (all elf subraces are taller in FR than base D&D with most being humanish height).
Min and max (average) weights range from 82 lbs(37kg) (for a 4'7" female) to 157(71kg) (for a 5'5" male) with the only difference being that males have 5lbs more on their base weight number.
Of course drow can have outliers in their heights and weights, most commonly due to some mixed blood, be it from demon blood, human, draconic or others.
So basically NWN screwed up with elf height in general which means that the height the base elf is in nwn is (on average) about right for drow (but not other elves)

Hehe indeed, its just that the D&D system calculates it all based on the Imperial system >.> I should look into and see if I can convert the table so I can make up a more Metric friendly roll system as well.
An ogrillion can get up to around 8 feet. A half orc between 6.5 and 7.5. A hobgoblin between 6 and 7. I did see the 10 foot half orc, although I think he was an ogrillon upon reading his bio.

It's far cooler saying shit like "The short squat Genas" or "The near emaciated Illuskan of above average hate of Yossarin". You know shit like that. I think NC said it above, but I'm to lazy to quote and +1

http://amiawiki.shatuga.com/index.php?title=Elf#Physical_Description Since I put the elf table here in the first place I figured I should be the one to add a metric version. It isn't exact but its pretty close so I hope that it helps... Also if anyone wants to double check that nothing is too off on it that would be awesome.

Random generation seems wrong to me with regards to weight because...
The Strength, Constitution and Dexterity stat should be a factor in such.
Remember, Muscle is more dense than fat and therefore is heavier. An acrobat/ gymnast may be very, very dextrous and slim but has alot of pure muscle so that keeps the weight up.
Though they are not muscles protected by a hefty fat layer like some wrestlers/ rugby/ American football players have. Their weight would be more than a skinny model that looks the same clothed because of this.
It needs a look at the standard tables and do some math to add in Stat adjustments to weight.

You can just pick a weight within the the "roll-able" weight mod that corresponds to the height mod of your character. The xdx(1d6, 2d4 etc.) is their primarily to show the low and high ends of average for the character of that height.
The way it is setup is to give a range of weights for each height that (they figured) made sense for a normal member of that race. If you start adding mods on top of those ranges your character will become an outlier being either very oddly heavy or very oddly light (which is perfectly ok if the character has a reason to be "abnormal").
So if you have a low con/str/dex character and want to represent it in their weight pick something near the low end of the weight modifier (corresponding to the height mod chosen or rolled) or like wise for a high con/str/dex character the opposite. Or anywhere between really.
Well I don't bother with random rolls I decide a believable height and then look at the concept, which then decides the stats then mentally adjust to a representative believable weight. Just some may just roll 'cause they were told too. It happens, I've seen it

I live in a metric country but I learned from years of Roleplaying with Americans and using the D&D system to understand Imperial. I'm at the point where I have a better idea of how tall/heavy someone is in Imperial (except in real life, in which I don't actually know what my height is anymore). TBH the system actually works fairly well for measuring people whereas metric is much better for distances and object mass. I think it's by design - Fahrenheit is keyed roughly to human body temperature, whereas Celsius is keyed to water.
Anyway, excessively Tall PCs - it's seen as a "weird heights" problem but notice how you rarely see unusually short people (race-relative)? It's psychological, escapism stuff - many of us want to play people with perfect bodies, and being tall helps with that. Or snowflake marysue-ism, too. I think a lot of us wouldn't give half a crap at all (provided the height is physically possible for the race) if it weren't clearly being done for marysue reasons and far too frequent. A few obscenely tall people would be alright. The amount at present is a bit much and breaks immersion a little bit.
When I do heights I usually use the P&P random generators available by race, and then tilt it based on what I'm looking for - tall, skinny, heavy, whatever. I disapprove of not including a height at all, because in cases where relative height comes up it can be kind of irritating. "Oh we're both tall and thin, but am I shorter or taller?" Given the degree to which even small height differences affect social interactions it's quite bothersome. But I guess as long as people will give a (consistent) figure if asked then it's fine really.
I just state 'tall' or something equally vague in the bio and let people imagine how tall exactly by themselves.
None of my characters measured themselves so if anyone asks how tall they are they'd probably shrug and respond like 'taller then you are' or 'a head shorter then you'.
Its not a big issue to me though giantism is a bit silly if overdone.

One thing that seems to be overlooked is that in the Forgotten Realms, according too the sourebooks all the way back to the origional grey box campaign setting, elves on avg are as tall as humans only. they are thinner and lighter with hands/fingers that are longer than humans.
So, while drow are smaller than other elves, they measure in closer to standard players handbook for elves.

We'll just put everything at hin height and let freakishly tall people slowly develop back problems. Then open up back injury clinics and WAAAY overprice them! Thus a new age of prosparity shall rain on the Kohl people.
