I picked up several gems off the floor in the temple with yuan-ti in it (in Quagmire) but they are labeled "stolen" when I try to sell them. Is there a reason for this, is there any way to sell them or do anything else with them, or should I just throw them away?

It seems odd that a merchant can somehow tell that a gem is "stolen" , and if picking things up off the floor of a ruined temple constitutes stealing, then most all of the loot in the game would be considered stolen.

The official lore reasoning, as I've heard it, is that those gems aren't real, they're just made of colored paste. And the merchants can tell. They're flagged as "stolen" because there isn't a flag for "fake."

[Edit]... As to your other question: yes, there's a purpose to them. But it's probably one of those IC things that would be a spoiler if revealed here on the forums.

Some super duper monster like paste. And show up just to lick the gems/paste just like that simple kid in kindergarden.
