Help! I just reinstalled NwN earlier today after a long and painful break from RP. Missed it too much! Unfortunately, I'm having some crazy bugs with my game and I'm concerned it renders it a bit unplayable for me! Any help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My issues:

When anything is moving on my screen, I get terrible FPS lag. The more on screen movement the more lag. For example, when there are even 3 normal bats just sitting there flapping their wings, I can't even rotate my camera without it "spiking" and spinning all over the place randomly and when I try to run I more so teleport than run.. I've tried with the graphical settings on lowest with everything off and it still seems to happen. :(

Another bug I'm having, albeit not all the time, is I'll have this weird 'invisible curtain/wall' effect. I forgot to screen cap it, but when it happens again I'll post it up. They're 2D blocks almost the width of a tile that rotates counter to my camera, and appear to be randomly placed all over. I can't see any placeables/pc's/npc's/effects behind the wall. To my knowledge, the only thing I can see through it is the default tile/floor.

Specs for whatever they're worth:
Win 7 64-bit
AMD x4 965 BE 3.4ghz
GeForce GTX 660 (drivers: 314.07)
4x 4gig ram

yeah.. your specs are "too good" for NWN, i've been experiencing this for a while too, there's a topic that references to a couple things can be done, such as setting cpu affinity and memory usage on the nwnplayer.ini so that the game can better handle the multitasking and newer textures amia uses. I've found that actually having some degree of AA on helps my stutters a lot, no matter the res, game options it still happens, but it can become nearly unnoticed with some AA "forced upon" by the ccc.

Yeah, try cranking the settings up in NVidia Control Panel for NWN. High Quality, high AA, high AF, the works. I remember a similar issue with Mechwarrior 3.

Also try it with no audio, see if that may be the problem.

I've heard that can help quite a bit with NWN. Something to do with the game being made only with single core in mind and I think that's where CPU affinity comes in.

(Incase you're not sure) the .ini is in the NWN directory, open with wordpad rather than notepad and under [Game Options] the Client CPU affinity line should be there, change it to 0 if it isn't already at that and also the memory usage for me is the first line under [Game Options], I set it to 64, but it personally never made much difference for me if any.

Make sure it's like this:

Max Memory Usage=64

And not:

Max Memory Usuage = 64

I can't remember, but I think the extra spaces between Usage and the equals sign and the # make a difference, though I could be wrong, but either way it will be better to do it how I said in case I am right, to reduce how many times you have to open and edit.

And lastly, sometimes even with Admin rights the .ini wont let you save it in the home location (Happened to me mostly on the greatly evil Vista). Best thing to do is drag it to the desktop, edit and save there, drag it back to the NWN directory.

Thanks a lot guys! I've cranked everything up in my nvidia settings and did the suggested tweaks to the nwnplayer.ini and the lag has definitely diminished!

Despite not being gone entirely, and still occasionally spiking, I do believe it is much more reasonable! If anybody has any more suggestions, I'd still like to try them, but if not, I'm more or less contented.

Thanks again! :)

Edit:

Aaaand it's back :'( ...I don't understand!! Double checked all the previous things I changed to semi fix it and they all seem to be the way I left them, so I don't know why it's reverted back to lagging horribly..

Edit:

Aaaaand it's gone!

Running in compatibility mode xp sp 2 in admin.. full screen windowed mode.. affinity set to 1.. another option in nwnconfig to set numcpu to 1.. running with 2d sound.. and all of the previously mentioned changes I've made.. but it's finally running smooth! ermahgerd I'm so excited! Thanks for all the help fellas! Looks like I'll be sticking around after all! :D

I think I need to apologise! I seem to have told you to put the CPU to 1, but it should have been 0 for dual-cores etc. Sorry for the mixup, but if you continue smoothly, you may get away with it as it is.

I'll edit my other post to fix that, incase any one else reads it and tries it.
