I'd like to know the official stance on how much gold can a character give out to another.

I believe at epic levels (21+) there's no limit.

I've been "warned" once for almost accepting, from what I remember, a 30k sword at lvl 9. (approximates, I don't remember the -exact- values but i'm pretty sure it's about right)

I have a neat RP idea which involves some form of "donation" to new lvl 3 characters and want to know what's possible. I'd guess 10k gold value, but then again I want to make sure.

Is there an -official- gold per recipient level donation maximum?

In all honesty though, newbies are regularly given 25, 50, 100k+ "gifts" by other characters. I once got a 100k donation when I started playing Amia and didn't know about the rules concerning that. I think many aren't aware there's a ruling concerning maximum donation / accepting donations, and/or ignore them. It -does- happen regularly, everyone knows about it. I choose to admit I know about it publically. I tell people about it when I can, but then again it's not my job to police it.

Naturally, I myself never, ever broke those rules after my warning and am quite paranoid and will even heed the DM channel in any situation i'd find even -remotely- questionnable concerning my characters accepting or donating gold.

Twinking constitutes as follows: giving another player items or gold that they did not deserve. Gifts are allowable so long as the person will be able to use them within 2 levels. For example, giving a level 10 a sword or armor he will need to be level 12 to use is acceptable (or a roughly equivalent value in gold). Giving said level 10 an epic drop off Windreaper, or from the epic store for free or a miniscule price, or something he'd need to be 21 to use, is not. It is also best to limit the number of such gifts to maybe one per RL month. Upon reaching level 25, the caps go away. Remember though, if you are at all concerned about weather some gift or aid rendered to a friend might get you in trouble, ASK A DM. If you're selling a high level item, and happen to run across a rich lowbie who wants to buy it, screenshot the transaction in order to protect yourself.

A player did not deserve the items, if say, a drow female commands a male to get them gear, and tells the male to pay for it. That's still twinking, and said female should not be doing such. "Deserve" means that the items or gold is earned with one's own hard work.

Thank you Bini.

Even if the way you posted it, with no comments, cried out " Read the forums before posting " bluntly.

However it still does not state how much gold one can give.

Go by what you'd pay for such an item were it on auction. It'd be very difficult (and obsolete now) to go by what the shop would pay, or the sometimes arbitrary values that come up as a result of NWN's item property handling.

Hey, guys who've been around longer than dirt and probably know exactly where to go to find every answer - how about you just not post if you can't bring yourself to post the answer? You're not helping. You might have noticed there's a lot of forum to read.

Someone clearly doesn't understand humor. I'm sorry.

I don't find this a very helpful answer. I know for a fact that I have a very different sense of value from most people and well there's probably a lot of people who have a very different sense of value from other people as well. This is only complicated by player experience levels and backgrounds in the system.

This rule really could use some clarification from the DMs because as it stands it was always very vague with the handling of gold particularly. With items it's relatively clear from the receiving end at least, but translating that into gold is difficult.

Since we're on this topic, what about an item(s) that normally would take a considerable amount of time and exploration (somewhat) to get but can be used at any level?

For example, I have seen this done a lot: An epic character, usually a leader of a faction or high-standing individual, giving a new member, friend, or "student" a completed/partially completed Book of Transmutation.

Now, if you ask me, those things are a bitch to complete by yourself, not just in finding them but purchasing them from other characters as well. Nevertheless, it's a kind practice, sort to speak, and I have a few of my own characters completing another book in the hopes of handing it down to someone that might need it.

You know you're shooting yourself in the foot by asking for clarifications, right? Insofar as you know the rule that's posted in R&L and interpret it in a fair and reasonable manner, you'll be fine. The more you double-check and make sure, the smaller your area of judgement becomes - and by extension, the judgement of others. It sometimes baffles me how willing people are to give up responsibility and autonomy in exchange for some peace of mind.

When it comes to hand-outs, the recipient's level probably doesn't affect your IC judgement: why would you give incredibly powerful stuff for free to anyone? Why would you just give a completed Book of Transmutation to a random passer-by? Note that the rules specifically speak of deserving. They are intended to stop OOC friends from boosting each other. Deserving does not mean "earn by hunting, levels and game currency." If you have a mage apprentice you've trained for a few weeks, they have easily deserved any Book of Transmutation or other piece of loot you give them. Two weeks of RP are enough to deserve just about anything in the loot boxes.

If you make an announcement and promise a prize of 100k for whoever submits the best short story for your competition, it doesn't matter if the winner is level 3. They deserved it IC and there's nothing shady about it. Dealing with such sums, you probably want to let the DMs know how and why the recipient deserved something that as a random hand-out would be twinking. But just remember: the twinking rules apply to gifts, not the rewards of hard work and RP.

When in doubt, best just ask a DM quickly. It's a bit a case to case basis too (Who, why, what) and exceptions are not unheard of.

One example: I personally would never deny a person gifting a deity ring of their patron deity. It is nice, it is fitting, it is appropriate imho.

I personally wouldnt want to see them handing over several thousand gold even if the charas have nothing to do with eachother and did nothing to earn it.

As by the exact amount... Well once upon a time I was told by a DM approximately 20k as maximum.

I personally find such a set limit hard to give. I would find 20k too much for a level 3. Whilst I would not be so strict about a level 16 or such.

That said, it really is best to quickly ask if you are uncertain about a particular gift or idea with rewards. Then you are always on the safe side.

Check the recipient's level, check the item value two levels above that, and you have the limit for a random hand-out/gift. 5k at level 3, 30k at level 10, 75k at level 15, 500k at level 20 etc. That's what our rule states, at least. It applies to gifts rather than earned rewards, of course.
