Guys, I'm hearing a lot about neverwinter, the game in closed beta that is being worked on. Even though I don't play neverwinter nights often now, I always had fond memories of playing on the amia server especially. What is your opinion on this new neverwinter game? I value this communities opinion the most because I wish a new game could give as good as an experience as the first neverwinter game.

Neverwinter is an MMO that will probably disappoint horribly. Remember Dungeons & Dragons: Online?

I wouldn't expect too much from something from Perfect World...

I think the OP is mistaking this MMORPG for an actual (good) D&D computer game. Bioware isn't making Neverwinter, and neither is Obsidian (the company behind NWN2). I wouldn't expect much from it.

Also, shouldn't this be in Off-Topic?

It's going to be terribad only if anyone would be looking to step forward to a new game, looking for similar experience to Amia.

It's a momorpeger, and it shows promise in its own genre. Namely because game developers today are very well aware that repeating WoW's success is not possible without innovation, and Neverwinter is trying just that. Dynamic, moba style combat within a lore-rich setting and focus on immersive adventures rather than grind, could make the title worthwhile.

I won't be playing it though. I'm waiting for Star Citizen.

Yeah, sadly the RPGs like NWN are never going to come back. They are unfortunately a thing of the past. Companies think that MMOs are they way to go. Unfortunately, they are all shit as far as I have seen. WoW is just ... crap, same as EQ. SWTOR was supposed to break the mold and be awesome ... and then it turned out to be just another MMO. And as for Perfect World ... aren't they the same company as Cryptic, who made STO? Yeah, that game was awamzing  (okay, it is fun as hell to play, but the fucking morons purposefully released an unfinished game... really?!).

Seriously, though, if I had any drive to make a game I would lobby for rights to another NWN game and actually do it correctly, in the vein of NWN1. But, alas, I suck at game design and all that :<

It doesn't look that bad, compared to some other recent offerings, but the only similarity to the Neverwinter Nights we know and love is in the setting and some of the class names / abilities.

It is very far removed from it's DnD far more so then Dungeons and Dragons Online and is more an action MMO then a traditional MMO. Think something not too far from Guild Wars 2.

The really interesting part is the extensions of the Foundry system used in Star Trek Online. If they can deliver what they promise on the content creation level (which they did -not- in Star Trek Online) then it'll be pretty nifty. Sadly though, unless they've made major changes to the game engine, this isn't going to happen. STO's missions were very linear, and the only real fail condition was to "give up" when you got tired of respawning. Even with escort quests, the ships you were escorting were flagged as unkillable.

There was no room for out of the box thinking, everything literally boiled down to "fly here, kill this or scan this" sometimes with some button pushing puzzle between.

I was told that it won't have the same capabilities that NWN and NWN2 have to run persistent worlds like Amia, there's not going to be a way for someone to create a world for players to join and have DM's do what they can do on NWN - the way it was put across there will be no way of DM'ing a server online whatsoever the way you can on NWN.

It's weird really. In the first one, if you play around in your own custom mod as a DM for a bit, you can quite easily pick up on things a DM can do, like spawning items and creatures, setting targets immortal or invulnerable and even possessing creatures with all your DM tools and possessing them without the direct access to said tools so you can instead use the creature in questions abilities they have.

Then NWN 2 got complicated not only with the toolset that was 'supposedly' better and easier than the first but also with DM'ing - I think I went DM side once on NWN 2 and it was horrific compared to NWN.

And now they're apparently removing that kind of thing altogether, I don't get why, I think the only reason this NWN lasted so long was because of the many things made available to do with the game - from overrides to Haks, creating worlds for others to enjoy to maintaining said world etc... There's so much you can do with the first one, which was reduced on the second no doubt making that more unpopular (I've read so many times that nwn2 online is utterly terrible and compared to this one it is) and then there's the one to be released that they seem to be restricting even further than that, I don't know what's going through their heads if this is true that makes them think neverwinter will stand the test of time.

I think the general SOP not is to make a game with a hook (ie Star Wars, Star Trek, DnD) and suck in as much money as you can before it dies out. I mean, it makes a certain sense and I can't imagine they won't get a decent ROI, but if thye would make a quality game like NWN again they would make so much more money.

Unfortunately, what makes sense and what companies think makes sense doesn't mesh. Ever. They will just keep cranking out shitty MMOs and pretend they are RPGs. Because let's face it, NWN was one of the last real MMORPGs. Now they have killed the RPGs entirely.

It's going to be like any other MMO, don't see why there would be any hope to have DMed worlds. Everything will run off of their hosting in a huge 'persistent world' just like any other MMO. It's a tragedy -_-

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I didn't know where to put it exactly. Mods please move it if this is the case.

I'm not totally against "MMO" games, although I think they have a lot of problems that make it really boring.

Oh.... now I'm really let down. Do you happen to have a source for that information? I have tried looking around for information and there really isn't any *valuable* information about the game.

I... actually enjoyed DDO. It was NOT the rpg type game I have come to love, but its probably the closest a modern game has come to what I want in an rpg game. That being said... Oh dear god pay to win model is not fun. As soon as I hit around level 10 I stopped.

That makes a lot of sense, given what Anubis said.

Thanks guys for your input. I'll be keeping my eye on this game, but for now I'll go back to path of exile.

Affraid I don't know of any solid sources to indicate that it is true, not even the Game wiki seems to say anything and all I could see under the mechanics section is the new Aligment system they'll be using.

Besides, everything is that God awful 4e garbage.

A real NWN game will be 3.5e

I don't even think it is even 4e, it looks closer to a standard MMO system skill/ability wise.

I think we're doing an interview with the executive producer soon on Subspace-Radio. I'll have to get more info on that.

It goes by 4e lore and a simplified version of the rules. And likewise contains things such as "daily" Abilities although since it seems to be a action based game it is just based on a sort of combat based filling system before you can use it again.

It looks to be a somewhat interesting MMO that takes a lot of the interesting stuff from other MMOs like the dodge mechanic and the ability to produce custom dungeon areas that people can then battle through. (The game seems like it will have a strong ability to "pay to win" though)

But in terms of an actual RolePlaying game? It doesn't look like it will come even close the the experience of NWN of NWN2.

No MMO ever will because of all the Brazilian kids, the gold farmers, and the lack of moderation.
