Not quite sure whether this goes in Off Topic, or here, but here goes:

I've recently reinstalled NWN, however, once I get past the initial boot-up screen, it slows down considerably. It played just fine on my desktop, but it doesn't seem to like my laptop very much. I'm currently running on Windows 7.

Halp!

I'm back up to 1.69 via the critical rebuild, but from what I've read that seems to be what's causing the problem.

Try:

Control+alt+del right click on NWN process, set affinity, and put it to one core instead of two.

Also upgrade your sound drivers.

It won't let me. It's telling me access is denied. Also, my sound drivers are up to date. That didn't seem to help at all.

I wanna get back in game so badly.

There's another way to set the affinity. Windows 7 doesn't really like you tampering around in the Task Manager, I guess. It hated me too when I tried it that way.

Go into your NWN directory, find the nwnplayer.ini file and it should look something like this at the top.

Quote:
[Game Options]
Memory Level=1
Memory Access=1
TooltipDelay uSec=100000
Enable FloatyTextFeedback=1
Hide SecondStoryTiles=0
Single Player ItemLevelRestrictions=0
Single Player Enforce Legal Characters=0
Client CPU Affinity=0
ClientEntireChatWindowLogging=0

The green is where you can set the affinity, obviously. Just change that to 1 or 0. I had the exact same problem as you, Cratz, until I set the affinity to 0.

I've tried that too!

Now I'm going through to see if one of the overrides I've put on is doing it. So updates will come soon!

Also try -1 or -2.

Try changing the sound setting to Miles Fast 2D, that helps sometimes.

Tried both of those. No luck.

And it's set naturally to Miles Fast 2D.

Argh! This is so frustrating!

NWN kept crashing for a friend of mine, he turned off shiny water, no problems after that. Turn off shiny water.

That should be in our logo. "Amia: A Peristent Role-Playing World - Turn off shiny water."

That's assuming the extremely unlikely scenario that there's an NWN player left in the world who doesn't know about it.

Check what "sound" scheme NWN is using in the Options -> Audio (?) section.

Both Arklon and myself had to change it from the default to one of the Dolby's. It changed the game from a slow crawl to as fast as you'd expect a 10 year old game to play on current tech.

Speaking of which, why the hell do I only get 30 FPS in a 10 year old game XD
Really I assume compatibility issues and translation from the old program to Win7 and current drivers, but still haha.

*sigh* Nothing seems to be working. And I really don't wanna re-format my desktop just to play NWN.

For me on Windows 7 it was a matter of finding the right GFX driver to use.

Have you set the executables to win98 compatability mode?

This along with posh water off already mentioned help fix similar problem for me.

Disable visual themes too, NWN is kinda old and themes don't work well with it in Win7. Yes, even though it's a fullscreen application and you'll never see the titlebar or window frame.
