There have been some questions about There have been some questions about what we do when and with people who misbehave on the forum. This made me think, and I came up with the following guidelines. Guidelines, because in the end we will look at the circumstances and past behaviour of people when it comes to dealing with transgressions.
I'd also like to stress that the overwhelming majority of your posts is fine without us playing the Gestapo, and that's something that a lot of other forums can be jealous of. This is one of the reasons why I am not going to be Moses and present you a list of things you can't do. You know perfectly well how to behave, but we all got a temper now and then.
1. Most of the complaints we get are about cussing of the level you also find around primary schools. So we will treat it the same way: a few days ban to calm down. You do it again? You get a new ban. Again? Ban. Again? Ban. You adapt, or you're away a lot.
1a. If you continue to be a pain in the ass we're going to remove you for a longer time because you're wasting time that DMs can use in a more positive way.
2. If you're getting beyond being naughty (racism comes to mind) you can expect anything between a serious ban and permanent vacation. Once again, depends on the words and situation.
3. When you're told to stop posting in a thread by a DM you do so. It's the wise thing to do: you're probably trolling and/or making an ass out of yourself. Failure to oblige can result in a short ban or a locked thread.
4. Spammers and other idiots will be removed without further ado.
5. If you got a problem with somebody you contact a DM. Don't start arguing in the thread about what you see as a transgression. You may even end up with a little holiday yourself if you start cussing as well.
6. We do our best and try to be both fair and moderate when it comes to bans. Don't throw a fit when you don't fancy the outcome. It's generally not worth the fuss.
That was what I wrote yesterday morning, before I opened the "What happens next?"-thread. That made me a sad puppy. So here's one rule:
No personal attacks. If you name somebody you do it in a neutral or positive way. That's not because we fear "The Truth", but because we don't fancy the public mud throwing that will follow. It's bad for the atmosphere, and generally leads to the idea that it's OK to deal with your grudges on the forum. This rule is obviously nothing new, you learned it in Kindergarten.
Well, the first post isn't sad. I think it's not a problem at all if people want to know what we will do when shit hits the fan. As I said: I wrote it before we had this little incident of yesterday.
I think it's good rules and from my experience in modding there are needed. Not because you have the notion that people will misbehave rather that if it happens you know what the protocol is

I must admit I find it rather annoying when a thread gets locked because one or two people say something, and the rest of the people are having a relatively nice discussion, thereby punishing not just the people responsible, but the entire player base.

Re. your point #3, Disco, might I also suggest that it include "Opening another topic to continue discussing something you were told not to discuss in another thread (locked or otherwise)". Again, one would hope this would be obvious, but...

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. Outlining consequences is a great thing. But good forum behavior seems like common sense to me.
It is most unfortunate that common sense is not so common at least it's use is not so common even if many have it.

I was really looking forward to the direction of the "What Next" thread, after being away for so long and then returning to find a relatively healthy community brainstorming to find new ways to continue to strengthen its player base. I didn't follow the tail end of the thread, however... It's very sad to see that, miraculously, there are people that fail to put aside their differences in order to share the common goal of maintaining hope for the server.
I really hope things get better around here... I wish I had the slightest idea of how to bring in new players.
Disco, you forgot to include a punishment for dramatic exits where the poster doesn't actually leave for any length of time, they just come back in an hour to see if anyone's reacted. I should know, I've done it enough times and feel horrible about being the poster child for 'This is so unfair! I'm leaving!' Which when you think about it, sounds like a tree complaining about a tornado bearing down on it and is equally useless.
I guess what I'm saying is, we could all use a bit less drama. At least the bad kind. It's a distraction, people bounce off it instead of listening to whatever complaint was being made.

Nahhh... people throwing a fit punish themselves enough as it is. You're getting all wound-up about something that's generally not worth the bother, and you're making a public ass out of yourself on top of that.
Besides, what would Amia be without traditions? You leaving and returning certainly is one of them.
