I've got a question regarding the subrace of Avariel

Is it a request only character, regarding the matter wings for 25DC should be added or is it possible to create a wingless one and progress the growth of the wings while RPing?

Some DM insight would be helpful to prevent any misunderstandings.

Thanks in advance

Avariels are request-only, yes. As are other oddball types of elves, such as lythari. And I believe that you need to buy the wings at creation, unless your avariel has specifcly lost their wings. And I don't think they can be regrown once that happens, though I could be wrong.

Having looked through Avariel requests previously, this is the impression I've gotten as well.

Great good to know cause I almost started playing one without a request, thanks to one player who reminded me of the fact they are only available upon request.

Also, as for the matter of wings, (I stopped playing about 2 years ago due to RL) I remember someone having an wingless avariel who was allowed to purchase the wings later on as she gained the DCs for it, which is something Id love to do myself, since I dont posses the DCs required and would like to play something different than I used to.

Is it possible to request a young avariel whos in process of developing wings?

My understanding is Avariels wings are gift from Aerdrie which was then passed on genetically but can be restored through divine magic (some powerful healing spells and such) if they were e.g. burned down or cut off.

Thoughts?

For all I know avariel are always born with wings and learn to fly on a very early stage in life already.

But you might want to wait for Sune or Mahtan to chime in here.

They are, and they should be nearly extinct because of the war against the Dragons they fought and lost over the skies.

I'd caution you that there could be IC consequences for going that route, Kalli. Avariel just about completely define themselves by their flight; a wingless avariel might be considered to be a shocking freak, some sort of abomination, cursed by Aerdrie Faenya to never know the joys of the airborne existence that is the defining legacy of the avariel.

As to whether wings can be restored if they're lost, that's really only a matter for a DM to comment on. But there wouldn't be any such things as an avariel who's 'developing' wings. They're born with wings; you don't start of as some other subrace of elf and then become an avariel later, if that's what you're thinking.

// Edit to say... I don't mean to imply that you shouldn't go your wingless-avariel route, if you're attracted to it and can get it approved. I just mean, you should know what you're getting into. :)

A wingless avariel seems pointless. One of the few races defined by the vain, gaudy cosmetic set of mary sue features attributed to most Elves.

A wingless Avariel will still be different from a normal elf just from the culture differences.

All of them are always born with wings, there isn't an Avariel born without wings. Since only two Avariel can make an Avariel. If an Avariel has a child with a Moon elf or Sun elf. The child will always be the full race of the other parent.

I'd recommend going with a normal winged Avariel first. Its better to first RP stuff you have a good source for. Not something made up or a "Special special character" for lack of term for it. You need to know how to play an avariel according to the books before you can play a defective one properly.

Also the DC topic is a little out of date and I just fixed it. Wings and tails are 10 DCs. But we still require stellar requests for such a thing.

This was probably back when people could claim they had wings & tails and whatnot without actually having them. This has changed.

Note:DO NOT RP wings and tails and glowing eyes that are not present on your character's model (I.E., WYSIWYG, do not RP tails/wings if you haven't bought them). Any PC created with wings or a tail or glowing eyes must purchase said modifications at character creation (and submit a request beforehand for approval), or as soon as possible afterwards.

Incorrect! They -were- nearly extinct, but their numbers have been on the rise again for some time.

Also, Avariels do learn to fly early, yes, but you still need the RP for the flight widget. ;)

Nope if you have wings at creation you get the flight for free. Unless you choose not to for some reason.

Avariel are born with wings. They learn how to fly just as any creature learns how to walk; from a young age and through experimentation/observation.

The belief that the avariels are granted wings by Aerdrie is just that - a belief. It is something the avariel believe happened, just as they believe Aerdrie is their own personal goddess, just as sun elves believe themselves to be personally tasked by Corellon to protect elven tradition and culture.

What subrace is used for avariel?

Starting as deformed/crippled and wingless could make for an awesome disebfranchised/evil/semi-evil bird-elf insofar as RP is concerned. It would be nice to see evil/bad PCs with more behind them then 'alignement due to build' or 'fear me! I'm mene!'.

EDIT: Idea redacted due to demonstrated cliched crapness. 'Broken bird'... made me cringe at my own redundancy.

It should be moon elf.

There are dime a dozen other races that cater to this far better than trying to poorly justify a primarily Neutral Good/Chaotic Good aligned race with an incredibly cheerful outlook on life and a fervent attachment to their CG deity being evil because of the broken bird cliché.

Thank you for all the feedback guys!
It kinda feels good to get back on Amia so with all I know I'll give the request a try and hope it's good enough.

wish me luck!
