Let me just say that this is NOT a shot or directed towards ANYONE. I just thought mabye it would be a nice discussion to have and I think its very valid. This will make it clear to me and hopefully others who are also wondering. It might even behoov others to post words/phrases that they are confused on whether they are allowed or not. :D

What words are allowed/not allowed on Amia? I know all persistant worlds and all campaigns are different for whats allowed or not.

Words/phrases that I mean:

-"That really sucks" "You suck"

-"Did you just fart?" "You smell alot like a troll fart"

-"Like... totally. Like, oh my god, like.."

-"Whose your daddy?? WHOSE YOUR DADDY!"

-"Bitch please... "

-"Screw you, a** hole"

Things like that. Im sure i'll probably come up with more.

I, Personally, would not use similar phrases. But that is because I find them tacky

Did someone actually say "Bitch, please"? xD;;

To be fair, not all of us speak English as the first language so our choice of vocabulary and insults may be limited to what we know from TV. It's not always because someone is intentionally trying to be a setting breaker.

I cant think of any of our players who would do it on purpose, :P I was just stating how I feel when I see them. =)

Well this just caught my attention the other day when someone spoke a few of these phrases. I have been on other servers that allowed those and others that were far more tackish.

I just feel its.. out of setting though on some. I know Salvatore uses words like 'fart' and 'suck' in his books and I know that other campaigns do allow them, but just wasn't sure on Amia.

Last I checked dirty words were allowed.
I generally try to stay within the setting.. but occasionally some of my characters would curse.. badly.

It's kind of fun to "Joseph Ducreux" and take common phrases and change the wording to the time period and social class of your character.

Thats kinda what im trying to get at here.. People DO say these kinda things in game. Whether anyone sees it or not, it does happen and i've seen it atleast a dozen times since i've started here. I mean, how do you respond to that? Do you go along with it, send them a in game pm, walk away, what? I personally would just walk away. It kinda ruins the experience for me.

I'd like to know if anachronism is alright or not, because it seems to lay in a kind of grey area... For instance, there is a placeable in the Cordor Theatre named Hamlet, but I'm not sure that it would be appropriate to be making mention of real-life literature for more than an easter-egg.

Author:  Yossarin [ Wed, Feb 01 2012, 6:13 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: Words/phrases: allowed or not allowed?

How exactly does anachronism apply to the Forgotten Realms, which has absolutely nothing at all to do with the timeline we are familiar with? Anachronism would only be in the context of that universe. Example: two elves talking about the rise of Myth Drannor before it has even fallen.

Post subject:  Re: Words/phrases: allowed or not allowed?

You know, I think tacky things are awesome when applied in the right light. I used to play a very... potentially tacky character... and sometimes fool around with one still... and I don't care if you bitches be hatin'. Do your own thing. Judge us, but we might judge you back.

Post subject:  Re: Words/phrases: allowed or not allowed?

This is an issue?

Vernacular is shaped by society and history. We can only guess at the history part (FR is just made up, its IC language never truly developed over time like ours did). So our society (read: playerbase) takes up the rest. You don't need to justify a PC saying "suck" or general displeased phrases any more than you need to justify them using the word "the" or "a."

As long as you're not putting in specific things from our universe, i.e. "Your mother pleasures herself with a Frisbee" there should be no issue. This is one of the few cases where I suggest backing away from the setting. It's constructed. Fabricated. There is only so far you can zoom in before you start to see the stuff that it actually comes from: our world. When you get to that level, you have to back up and just take it at face value. People IC say "you suck" because somehow, someway, that has come to be the phrase of the day, regardless of whether it parallels our world or not. It just is what it is.

Post subject:  Re: Words/phrases: allowed or not allowed?

At the end of the day the question should be, "Does it harm immersion?"

Amia's an RP server, so really it should all be about how the roleplay is affected.

Author:  serbiris [ Wed, Feb 01 2012, 10:54 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: Words/phrases: allowed or not allowed?

Yeah it's not nearly that simple. People have different thresholds for immersion-breaking. Some are sensitive and some are insensitive, it's all really subjective. It's pointless to look for a middle ground because you'll be bugging the people who want it harsher and the people who think it's too harsh. So the current ruling (that there's no rule against certain kinds of speech) is probably for the best.

Other than that I mostly wanted to say what DI said, oh well. I bet people are sick of me talking about sociolinguistics anyway.

Author:  IronAngel [ Wed, Feb 01 2012, 11:21 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: Words/phrases: allowed or not allowed?

None of the examples cited by the OP strike me as out of place. (Maybe "that sucks" is too lazy and everyday, but not counter-immersive.) They're common English words or idioms, and when we translate Common into English we translate its idioms into English ones. The key issue is immersion indeed, but like Serbiris stated we all have different ideas about immersion.

Trying to sound archaic just for the sake of it often comes across as shallow. Paying not attention to language, on the other hand, seems sloppy. I prefer a middle ground where the fourth wall is subtly (or blatantly) poked at and comical commentary blends with immersed dialogue. I'm not a literary genius though, so usually I default to formal English (not archaic but something that would pass as correct written language) with some flavorful idioms.

If you're bothered by very everyday phrases, why don't you react to them in some creative, fitting way? If somebody calls you a pussy, crack a joke about them being a mouse or something (hopefully better).

Post subject:  Re: Words/phrases: allowed or not allowed?

Well Amia's open to roleplayers of all stripes and I'm glad of that to be honest. On some servers it's like, if a new player joins and they're not used to roleplaying they just get shunned and treated like crap. Glad that's not the case in game here.

This is the best way to insult someone:

What about drizzle...as it "Its not raining that much, its just a drizzle."

There are matters of set breaking and matters of tact. Personally, I try to avoid the more sensitive things depending on who I am around.

My personal rule of thumb is, try not to offend anyone but also remain in my character.

You can do both, like you edited a***ole....people have a good idea what you mean.

Or you can say Freck or Feck or Friggin or Freakin for....

Just my 2 cents

I'm not sure why using a silly censorship workaround is more immersive than saying fuick, a perfectly valid IC word. But yeah, opinions I guess.

'cos for some people "fuck" sets off a warning in the brain that says "Something is seriously genuinely wrong!" due to how they've been raised/conditioned, which does break immersion more than the silly workaround. It's kinda like how when you hear your name in a mix of random chatter you instantly react, but a different effect.

I'm one of those weird people, but I've also been on the internet long enough to be used to the fact that people are going to use whatever word they want and I'm not even going to bother arguing against it. Would appreciate it if people didn't, and avoid using it myself, but don't care.

I suppose that is right. We censor our language and things about sex, Europe doesn't.

They instead, censor violence far worse then we do. Seeing very gory, very brutal things here, be they car crashes, people being cut up by chain saws, cut in two with shotgun blasts..etc...is more or less a yawn for an American whereas most Europeans that I know of, and mind you its a few but by no means close to tens of thousands, are rather shocked by it.

Its the difference is cultures. Americans come from a more Puritan history where sex was the taboo but, being in the wilderness and such, guns, violence and what not was common, everyday things.

Europe was the opposite, sex was the rage and they had had enough of the violence.

At least, that is what I think...I could be very wrong.

Again, I think its the sensibilities of people around you and whether you worry about them or not and to what degree.

I error on the side of caution most of the time but do let the expletive out now and again. Especially when my emotions are up in RL and all to often, in game.
