This question has bothered me for some time now?
What if you want to be, for example: an assimar but also mulan Which subrace should you pick and why would that one be more important than the other. Unless of course you can magically have two subraces...

I'd have to assume aasimar would take the center stage in that case, bloodlines>culture, and also the side effects one of those should experience on the prime (banishment effecting them for example.)
or, mix and match?

Whether you're an aasimar born in Baator or an aasimar born in Chult, your blood's power is your blood's power... not where ya grew up! Just like tiefers! They should be able to be distinguished to which one is more important using that guideline. Fey born anywhere are still fey. Humans born anywhere are not just any kind of human, though! And I think the subtle point of those human subraces is that your character -grew up- there. Though I don't know if everyone plays 'em that way.

aasimars are pretty much a region (thinking wise)of thier own anyway, a aasimar even in mulan areas would still behave very strange to normal people due to thier devine bloodline. And as Estara said, blood is blood, it comes first.

Kraniumbrud wrote: Blood is blood, it comes first. Not always true. In this context though, being an Aasimar would out-rule being a Mulan abilities-wise I agree. However, because Aasimars, like Tiefers, are not direct descendents of outsiders so to speak, there is no crime in your character having Mulan mannerisms or appearing Mulan in nature. Although they may be out of place because, like Tiefers, Aasimars are -always- out of place wherever they go (except on Amia that is) that's not to say there are no Aasimars in Mulan.

Planetouched transcends all other subraces. An Aasimar Sun Elf takes Aasimar. An Earth Genasi Gold Dwarf takes Earth Genasi. A Tiefling Strongheart Halfling is Tiefling.
DM's note: Drow get messy with this, so if you want to make a Tiefling Drow, you may need to chat with DMs to make sure things go smoothly, but in the end you're probably getting stiffed one way or another, i.e. not having Drow SR or something similar simply because we can't combine subraces.
Re: Aasimar/Mulan, a huge majority of Aasimar in Faerun come from Mulhorand so this is a non issue, they're well known and well respected. And certainly not out of place. Almost every Aasimar in Mulhorand can trace exactly what deity their parentage is from. Mulhorand is the minor exception to the "No godchildren" rule by definition of what an Aasimar in Mulhorand is. Obviously you use comment sense in this and you're not the son of Osiris but rather his great great great great grandkid twice removed or whatever.

Out of curiousity, wouldn't a Drow/tiefling mix be considered a Drae'gloth? Or is that only a specific kind of half daemon thingy?

Tieflings arn't half demons, you'd be looking at something a bit more full on with drae'gloth. in a similar way dragon disciples are not half dragons, they have aspects of dragons though. you could apply that to most of the subraces that are touched by something, feytouched, gensai, another way to look at it is with shadowdancers and palemasters, touched by darkness and death respectivly. though its a bit deeper than that.
think 0.00001% or something like that, compared to uh, genies, elementals, celestials, actual demons and lords, and those weird things that live on the far plane, though idk if they have hybrids that spread like other magical races and happenings.
