Ever miss a real quest-campaign with a group of people on a large roleplaying server as amia? Huge events, lots of factions, but for a continued long time story with a party it just seems unfeasible. So after the third or so of Silent's jungle mania, also known as the european beginings, I thought, why can this not be done for high level characters?

A small number of characters (5-8) sign up for the event picked from those the DM things will fit for it. Their characters can not be played outside of them but they have the chance to be part of a real story that stretches over some time. Perhaps to spice things up a chance of perma death, makes everyone need to think and the price on the end, be it oh so small or oh so big, will feel well deserved. A real adventure.

We prefer that stories have some relevance to the overall story rather than higher level one shots.

yeah I think lower levels is better anyway.
DMs do tons of events all the time and its more fit to a higher level group and lowbies really cant take part because they just die, and if the DM weakens it then the higher levels steamroll the stuff.

wyrmhold stuff, Nes'eks large scale event...ect all were a continued long time story that any DM could pop on and throw some monsters at us, give us mini side quests but the main story effecting RP was controled by the DMs of the event.

but I still belive Alternate Beginnings should be used to get people into areas players avoid, like 75% of Boss-mia, Caraigh,Frozenfar,Forstakkr,Khem...ect because people dont need anymore help building ties to Active-mia

You mean those epic events that start with 5-8 players and end with 30 christmas-buffed epics who suddenly have to give their 2 cents, coming from the other side of the island? ;)

I thought you always referred to yourself in first person plurality. Al la "My name is Yossarin, for we are many!"

I kinda have a peeve with this as well. Though it by no means happens to all plots, I've been involved in a good epic few that have kept the same amount, but it seems like plenty of plots just look like a fantasy version of We Love Katamari. And those events usually seem to drag on forever. Or the DM ends up having to make the opposition somehow god-like in combat so it can stand against 20 fully buffed fighters while being pelted by an equal amount of casters.

I'd be all up for a few plots that take place "off of the island" and where you can't play the PC for a while anywhere else than that plot. So long as epicness is maintained. Sure, if we meet up with Elminster and Ioulaum in a tag team match, I expect us to be used as a proverbial toothpick, but not every peon guard in Waterdeep being a level 25 Weaponmaster.

I wouldn't mind epic events that involve no fights whatsoever. Keeping buffs up only distracts anyway.

For me its complicated. Sure I want to try out stuff but you have to factor in a lot more details and variables when dealing with epics. My number one complication when having epics involved starts with the sentence "I want to cast..." people always want to cast some weird dnd spell. Dnd has designed literally hundreds of spells and there's bound to be one that perfectly solves the sitaution for you but it very much ruins it for the dm unless you make a lot of failsafes against that stuff hence the complications. Low levels are so much easier to work with
That said I do run stuff for epics every now and then.

Alternatively, you could make this into a .... "Got an extra epic character you want to die gloriously? I've got ideas, let's put together a story and work out the eventual demise."

Makes death more apparent on the server, might be fun, and clears unfinished business.

I thought this topic was going to be about something else. Yes, you grab a concept and make a character to you play during the DM's plot, but they aren't going to be alive at the end of it even if they succeed in their quest. They will live on only in the stories that are told about them.

The idea there is that you won't be thinking about how you're going to develop your character afterwards, and you aren't going to have unlimited opportunities to interact with other characters so you should make the most of the ones you do have.

That makes a lot of sense. Oh, and I meant not to say there are no good events or no events for epics. But they are still very different from the adventure style roleplay.

 I'm all for giving existing PCs of any level "meaningful" deaths. Just hit me with a PM if you'd like me to try to put something together that ends a PC in a permanent fashion. Be aware my definition of "Meaningful" in this instance is based entirely upon what would be in line with character development for said particular PC on a case by case basis. This means death requests would be accepted by me based upon RP provided.

However, whether or not any bards or former friends continue to sing your toon's glory after the death is entirely going to be based on the impact your toon had on them and others. It is my opinion that DMs can't do all that work for you.

Reasons for toons to Die for good are numerous: Age, depression, pride, health condition, dares gone wrong, vanity... Maybe just a desire to take a toon into a final blaze of glory, potentially living through it, even if it means their own untimely demise. Character death, from my point of view and based upon experience in game, can be every bit rewarding as character life. It is an experience I wouldn't simply flat-out deny to any fellow player.

No thanks. I'm not here to jerk you off. You want to kill youtr PC? Go for it. I'm happy to help.

But I'm not reading off some little script of your so you die gloriously and on everyone;s mind.

Dwagin's guide to meaningful Epic Deaths:

1. Have your character make meaningful contributions in the gameworld as a whole, affect other characters. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
2. Die doing one of the aforementioned meaningful contributions, even if its meaningful only to the character's faith, or a few other characters, or EVEN IF NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW except you and a DM. Those are the most epic in my mind.
3. Character stays dead.
4. Return to step 1.

Story > All.
