Seriously if you don't post where your Auction notices are placed, and if the bidder doesn't deign to put where they replied I will lock your Auction thread.

This isn't WoW, you can bugger of with that type of shit.

I agree mostly. I think it might be a little unfair for the auctioneer if the thread is locked when bidders do not post properly. The one who did wrong should be punished only.

Well, Perhaps with a few locks the auctionboards can be steered towards more Rp. A few bad examples locked will probably state an example.

The fact is that auctioneers should moderate their auctions. IF someone posts.

And thats it, if the auctioneer takes that as a bid, I will lock the thread.

Post subject:  Re: Auction Board.

That is quite fair then yes.

Seeing not accepting the bid is basically all the auctioneer can do to moderate. But that he should do then.

Even though I occasionally use the auction forum, I'd rather it not even exist. Force us to actually market ourselves ICly. In turn, it would have the benefit of RP and a minor, side benefit of helping to slightly drive the market down.

The market stalls have seen a significant decline since the auction subforum was added, I'd wager.

Ok, it is corrected. My first auction here. I've never really seen the auctions conducted in any particular manner, myself. Everyone bids in various manners, such as "2.7M," or some variant.

I agree that it should be done in character, just rarely see it done so.

Given that 90 percent of epic trading occurs between a core group of players you'd wager incorrectly. IT would do absolutely nothing to drive the market down. The market stalls are used as they always were.

I'd propose a sticky placed in the Auction forum so that the basic guidelines of etiquette are made clear to everyone.

Also, when you post in the forum you are doing it IC, just not IG. IC or IG it really doesn't matter. Some people also post as way of advertising their wares and also run a shop.

Post subject:  Re: Auction Board.

It is hard to conduct an auction IG when there are plenty of people bartering with you at the same time, then you also have to take into account they speak with each other as well at the same time, or Hil'rash is there to make it really hard to keep track of stuff.

If it could be done IG, it would be great, but I don't see it happening, UNLESS there was an auction held each week or so, at different cities each time where auctioneers and bidders could assemble and place bids on wares, but I see some trouble doing that as well, since it works best if only using gold as a resource of bidding.

The auction board is a handy tool. Would be neat with guidelines though, so everything that is not properly filled out is ripped to shreds and tossed in the garbage.

Isn't it the seller's right to determine the value of the item they're selling and to determine if the offer (gold or items) meets said value? I don't see gold working best, though I agree that it should, at least, work.

And it -can- be done in game. You just have to put in the effort. Lots of people won't do it simply because it's easier to wait out a higher profit by auctioning on the forums.

I agree it's not, but the causal problem for me is that people generally don't go to the place where the threads state the notices are, so they're just omitting the step of claiming they have. I don't blame them; it's silly and false.

I can see there's an argument to made that it's just too boring to insist on people going into South Cordor or the Triumvir and emoting to an empty zone, but if it's okay to skip doing it in game, then why isn't it okay to skip lying about it on the forum?

As it stands, I could go to each place with a messageboard PLC and emote putting up an auction, my bidders could all go and emote reading and responding, I could trawl round the whole lot and emote pinning up a reply, but if we forgot to state the locations when we wrote it up on the forum, we'd get locked. Two people who hadn't even logged in but made up some BS about the wheres and whens would be fine.

The image that springs to mind is an office where someone is regularly shitting on the toilet floor, and Management responds by checking that everyone's washed their hands. Yes, hand washing is good, buuuut...

This entire line of argument can easily be dismissed by me just having an aversion to out-of-game RP.

Post subject:  Re: Auction Board.

Is it possible to create bulletin board in-game that is saved between resets and is updatable by players? Perhaps a job system requirement for auctions that allow you to scribe on a bulletin board? That would force players to go to the location where the auction is held. I don't know much about the mechanics of the game (developmental side) so if this is completely -not- feasible, please excuse my lack of understanding. It would seem though since placables etc., do not stay from reset to reset it is not feasible.

The storage function in Walkeen, Kampo, Wiltun etc, came to mind though. Can a common storage box to all players be created to hold something capable of being scribed like a picture or other job system item? The person would then open the Auction box to see all the auctions and with the job system scribe onto the auction item showing his bid. Similar to a room key at the Inns, he would not be able to leave the area with the auction item. Again, sorry if NWN cannot do something like this.

If you mean market IC as in, setting up stalls, then its a bit unfair due to timezones.

Well, Chris wasn't saying anything about the auction boards not being used. He just wants people to post where the notices are located, where people go to see the notices, and for auctioneers to quit saying "Tell me where to meet you, Pershnickle! You won the Epic Hammer!"

In truth auctioneers wouldn't want to sell to someone who doesn't tell them exactly who they are and where they can be reached. Why would an auctioneer want to post publicly that the winner can come find them? That's not efficient trading at all. Hell, I'd go so far as to say post a description, so you can find each other. None of this random logging in and meeting up, bumping into each other and asking randomly if it's the person you're looking for and, oh! Surprise! It is!

Yes.

I totally agree with the thought that the 'abstraction' should go, the auctions now do see to detract from any immersion of the IC world. Tempted to bring up the thrice-cursed party ball for the same reason, but.. I learned my lesson. This place is just not (enforced) hardcore rp.

I suppose it is now time for a new player-led 'faction' to take the lead with auctions. Characters leave items with auctioneers, with a reserve price attached. Auctioneers sell items, and take a slice of the sale value. Just how they operate for real. Of course, after not very long they might amass a considerable sum, and arrange a writ or license in effect monopolising auctions, so they ~have~ to be conducted through them. That should lead to a nice bout of mercantile/lawyeristic RP, and the establishment of a guild, as well as a nice line in rogue RP for the inevitable black market auctions..

Or, status quo, of course. Ho-hum.

I agree.

In game= Ic. Out of game = OOC.

Some might argue, but after all, when one write "Pc Stories" in the IC forum area, do they expect all to react ICLY?

Those stories are for RP flavor, for entertainment and shouldn't be taken ICly, thus, in game. Forums should be for entertainment and questions, announcements, etc.

It's kinda illogical for people who use the forums to see all those posters "Icly" all over the place and those in game to not see them.

Shouldn't those who take the time to wander from town to town icly to see the posters have a better idea of what's available?

People can just answer a post in "Brog" now for example and never have been there in game.

My two cents.

What I meant is, PC's can't possibly learn about a character's story by "reading the forums".

It has to be RPed in game for other PC's to know about a pc's story.

On the forum, the -players- learn about a char's story.

People have done IC stuff on the forums, specifically in the 'PC Stories' forum, just so you know.

The problem with that is it doesn't work unless there is a system that displays postings and such. Signs disappear after reset, remember. It's a limitation of a game.
So basically you are saying that people that are not on the same time as a merchant should be shafted.

Seriously, stop complaining about it and make a suggestion to improve it instead.
The forums are a way to supplement the game, ergo a way for people that are on a vastly different times to connect.

And by the way, if you are against the IC portions of the forum, why are you using them? I've seen several posts by you in the auctions section.
Makes for a weak case for your arguments. Just sayin.

i'm not saying it couldn't work but, the little details worry me there. neutral company why not, based in cordor, would be an example of the latter.
