The reason I made this thread is to enhance my role play. I find many players including myself end a character at lvl 30 (or max lvl) just to make another, and then repeat the cycle.

I want you: those who have dedicated themselves to developing one or a small number of characters beyond the lvl limit, to tell me what inspires you to 'stick to it'.

Please keep it short people, no walls of text.

Thanks,

chumpe

Roleplay. The idea of achieving something IG beyond levels and stats, which pretty much drives me to play on RP servers to start with. Honestly, I tend to treat lvl development as a completely separate branch from RP development.

In a lot of ways, the game begins at level 30 on Amia. It was more so true in the past then it is now. At least one of my characters gets involve in a lot of RP that has heavy PvP possabilities. Level 30 for such things is almost a requirement, espeically if your the leader of a group involved in Inter-Faction Warfare.

The other reason is that I've had a character for a long time, and it took me so long to get them to level 30, that I don't want to suddenly throw them away. A lot of things happen when you hit level 30, RP wise, which is different to the previous levels. For example, your suddenly the biggest fish in the pond, your character is powerful and has a wealth of experience. They are generally a bit more egotistical and confident because of this. In previous levels its always been about being the highest level. When 30 hits it becomes about having the correct gear sets. Having the best tactics. Its more a game of the mind then simply being really strong.

Also I hate leveling. I hated when I grinded my characters, and I hate when I do it now.

Other players/characters who want the character to stick around. Without those, you're not weighted down with guilt every time you roll a new character.

I disagree with the notion that life for characters begins at 30. It begins where you start to think of them as more than just Build #56971 and start breathing life into them, their mannerisms, their hopes and dreams. It starts when you forgo tonight's plans of cramming in one more level and focus on what other characters want or need.

It's a lot easier to validate your own character concept and see them as worth hanging onto, when you're willing to spend a bit of your time doing the same for other players' characters.

Well.... I end up developing a character to get to 30, then really putting them to work once they get there. I always have a set goal I want accomplished when I make a character. It doesn't really matter if that goal is accomplished, but if you work at it IC. Then I kind of feel you always have a reason to play the character. I made Samaltrimeth with the sole purpose to protect the grove, Illigarux with the purpose to rule the world, and Shadows with the purpose to start an assassin's guild. Samal's purpose works, and Shadows purpose came true, so now I can work off of that. Illigarux isn't maxed, but when he is it won't be easy for him to try to rule the world. It most likely won't happen, but.... he'll always work toward it.

That was shortish, wasn't suppper short, but IDK that's how I see it.

Uhuh RP, simply that really, its nice to rp with characters that have been around a while. That and you can tell newer players grand tales of past events etc. immersing others in the setting and rp while recalling some good memories.

I strongly, strongly, and even more strongly disagree that the game somehow begins at "LV 30." Unless, for people who are too afraid OoCly to engage within any hostile RP without having the best possible chance of winning. Which is just, frankly, childish. Playing in FR means taking part in a story where there is most likely someone stronger, smarter, and more adept than you. And to not engage in that story until you've literally become superhuman because you're afraid your PC might not come out smelling like roses all the time, well, you might as well play dollhouse.

I actually don't level my PC's until I feel their RP has warranted it. When they become "Epic", it's because they've actually done something "Epic" IC. Not just because I had the spare time to run Yuan-Ti 10 times in one night.

In any case, let me get off that soapbox and answer the OP. Firstly, for me at least, Lvling does not equate to developing. Hell, you can develop a lv2 PC with loads of RP without ever killing a monster. Which is why I think there may be this "level and repeat" mentality you mentioned. "I got this PC to lv 30, I've won the game." It's like saying "I won at life", or at least your PC's. If one only sees leveling as development of his/her PC, then of course when he can level no further he will have to start over. But for someone who has taken it upon himself to continue the life journey of a living piece of fiction, reacting and acting within a dynamic setting, then it doesn't end until the PC's life ends...permanently. Or at least progresses to a stage that can no longer be represented IC(see: Afterlife in FR).

So what makes me "develop" my PC's past achieving lv 30? The same thing that keeps me from leveling them past lv 3/5/9/15/29 before their time. RP.

I have 2 level 30 PCs - one I played for a year, the other I've played for 5 years. In both cases, it took me about 8 months to get them up to max level, during which the RP shaped who they would become. But character development doesn't stop at 30 - you may stop adding numbers to your hit points (save for rebuilds, which should have RP behind them anyway), but you can still accumulate cool stuff (especially, via DCs, things that add to your RP) and the personalities of your characters may continue to change based on what happens to them. In fact, my main hasn't adventured in years - she just associates with people. Call it 'social RP' if you like, but it isn't just gigglepoking. She's never been to some parts of the server, or had any interaction with some of the epic bosses, but she is known far and wide (at least by reputation) and has a position of influence in Cordor.

I had one character that I was going to keep below 7th level; in fact, I had turned off xp gain for him. Unfortunately I didn't play him enough and ended up killing him off, but I plan at some point to resuscitate the concept. I believe that low level characters can still have significant impact on the world outside the realm of adventuring.

I despise the mentality that you have to be level 30 to really begin your character. That's simply wrong. I have lots of characters, varying in levels from 3-30. What makes me decide to stick with them is if they gain an RP foothold or not. Every one of my characters starts out as a concept and requires a few certain things to happen ICly to get them to stick. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

I have one level 30. the others I RP with are less than and I cant be bothered to go grinding most of the time so they have remained at their levels for some time now. My levle 30 is interesting and I spent a long time levelling her because I developed her character before level 30. What keeps me going afterwards is that she has relationships with several toons that stretch back to pre-30 times.

It's the RP

These are some of the biggest reasons i'm trying to stay on one character now.

That's something that I never enjoyed to be honest... when I saw that was most of what all the lvl 30s did it took the sense of exicitement out of having to explore the whole isle when you first start off your character. Don't get me wrong, it gives a real 'sense of realism to an unreal world' as one of the DM's said. But there didn't seem to be a any exiciting plot to it.

What i'm saying is: Where's the action?

I stick to my one guy because I belive to be like all the ones people comment on like Larloch,Drizzt,Elminster,Halaster,Khelben,Artemis Entreri....ect you cant have more then 2-3 chars total.

a guy who had 6 alts and spents 30 mins on them aday vs person who plays one 3 hours aday the person playing one should be superior, now that can come in many ways, reputation,wealth,power...ect

for the most part DMs try and reflect reputation IC when dealing with NPCs.
Players will bring up who ever as they chat, but its unlikly they will remember some alt they see for 1 hour per week vs a person they see 15 hours.

RP your level 30, and you will find that there's plenty of action to be found.

You make it up as you go along in some cases. And getting to know other characters by engaging in light banter will give you an idea of what might work. Plus of course, half the fun is finding out where the action is by asking around.

Best advice on here, set a goal for your character or several goals even, I have 1 level 30 and I play only him because he's just so damn fun, I love him to death. I've set several goals with Draco in the time I've been here, most of the smaller ones being accomplished but I still got those bigger goals to strive for and more smaller goals to make so I can get to the bigger ones.

Make a personality that totally suits you and keeps you entertained, a character you can just fall in love with and play constantly. If I didn't dedicate myself to Draco I wouldn't have made anywhere near the progress that's been made or have so many memorable moments with him compared to if I spread my time over three characters. Set multiple goals both small and large and really put in the time and effort to see those goals through, you never know who you could meet or where you can end up.

The only reason I level my characters is that some point you're either gonna have an insolvable difference of opinion, and you can take that in a very broad way, and then there's a good chance you're gonna have to beat your opinion into the other persons skull, so you better be good at that.

Or at some point a DM or player is gonna ask you to do a dice role, so it better be the best darn role you ever made.

But for RP, I find it completely unneeded. Roles for me only make up 5% of RP anyway. Its a rare day that I need to fiddle around with my dice. I find my RP to be the same at level 1 or 30 and reaching level never made me quit any character. Don't get it why people would do that anyway.

I say make no more then five characters and stick with them, untill you get killed or been around so long old age becomes a role. Then perma death is a great RP move.

Think I came to Amia two years or so ago, and I'm still playing that same character.

I agree with this. I do not make alot of characters, I have like 2 {lvl30} and I've played Vindel for a few months and found that when I jumped myself into a situation and risks I became more and more a part of the game. When I took the initiative to raise my hand when it came to volunteering; your character becomes more noticed and people start to want to be around the guy who wants to do stuff. You do not have to be level 30 to be a super cool, popular guy, or really high standing individual. All you have to do is talk to people IC and get to know them. Sooner or later they will say "Hey, That guy I talked to earlier seemed pretty cool, I should ask him for help or somthing", and huzzah! You have RP and your going to be too busy to even level your character, lol. When a DM event happens, don't try to be the guy who runs up to the evil Dude and tries to smite him (unless your character personallity is like that) instead; be clever, try to look for clues while the other 10+ adventurers are beating the snot out of him. Go to his secret lair and grab his super secret plans or snag his super secret potion of awesomness from behind the bookshelf! I don't know, but there is a billion ways to do things without lifting up a sword or pvping. Though PvP Is a very important thing to RP and will eventually happen, you can always find ways around it.

I hope this helped.

Roleplay is the reason. I have two main chars, one level 30 that was my first 'real' char here (ie I trial-and-error'ed a few chars when I first joined, they are currently hiding in my archive) and my other is a recent start but only level 26 currently. I have had a lull in my level 30 only because of IC and OOC things, which I took advantage to make my newest one (I've had a few fizzlers between them). But I keep coming back on my level 30 because he has so much story to him, and so many IC relationships (at varying levels). He's got a ton of story left to tell, and so much more he plans on doing. That's why, you gotta let your char explore themselves.

Also, it took me over nine months, I think, to get him to level 30 with several leveling lulls in there where I just RPed. My new one had it easier due to friends starting new chars at the same time and having plenty of people to party with

This thread made me cringe. I've never gotten a character past 22, and the majority of my characters are in the 6-15 range. The only reason I can see for needing to level a character is if a mechanic is an integral part of the character. For example, Ranth, one of my two over-20s, would be somewhat restricted if I had fewer shifter levels. No more interesting conversations with unsuspecting drow, no more shifting into a child and pulling pranks on unsuspecting adventurers...

Similar story with Garnith, my other over-20, although in his case I will admit some bias. (First character ever made, polymorph and invis were favorite spells, see that there's this thing called Shapechange, OMG MUST HAVE IT).

But honestly, an incredible amount of RP comes from lower levels. Elail, for instance, is incredibly fun to play around with, despite being level 15. Same with Burick and Rini, they have fairly interesting characters, and how people react to those characters makes some very complex and fun RP.

As for the one-or-two-character thing, I'm gonna disagree with the majority opinion here. I generally maintain eight or nine characters at a time, simply because I have days where I know I will not RP one well. I don't want to detract from another player's RP due to me having stubbed my toe or something, and hence having, say, a happy-go-lucky-veneer-over-a-cynical-core character revert to just being a grumpy old cynical sod. especially if he's going to run into people who already know him. Character moods may change, yes, but having the entire personality of your character change due to OOCly having a bad day is horrible. Doing that would make me feel like I'm failing as a RPer by damaging the experiance that others have with my character. Hence, multiple characters. If I feel in the mood for one, I'll go with that one. If I don't think I can RP any at that time, I'll either make a new character who I can RP, or play something else.

Sorry for the kind-of-rant, I am clearly not in a Ranth-mood today. Possibly a Legnr-mood.

I tend to personally keep one character active at a time only, the others being faded out after a little while until they're not needed anymore.

The simple truth here is: You -will- find far more RP while between 5-24 range, simply because you're usually out, thrown into random groups for hunting in which you meet people that you normally may never have associated with. These relationships build up outside of the "hunting grounds" due to the characters obviously recognising each other and thus RP can continue to develop at 30.

If you honestly level on your own, you'll quite literally be a nobody at 30. You can usually slip into a group's RP because one of your friends are there that you hunted with in the past, but if you don't know anybody in that group, then you'll be hard-pressed to try and join in.

Think of it something like this: Were I to meet one of my clients outside of work, I'd generally be friendly to them if they sparked up a conversation with me around my mates. If someone I didn't know just decided to chime in like that, I wouldn't give them a second thought, likely just staring them down until they left that circle due to feeling either uncomfortable or intimidated. (Now obviously in Amia I'm a little more accepting and try to allow people to say their bit to see if they can fit themselves into the conversation, but you get the idea.)

Absolutely.

Problem is, that with the builds that are running around, on lvl 30 most of them can easily solo any boss and any location. They run alone, loot alone and then just stay in town (forest), staring blankly ahead, waiting for something to happen. Which happens a lot.

PB 30 #1: "hi!"
PB 30 #2: "hello!"
PB 30 #1: "you ok?"
PB 30 #2: "ok, you?"
PB 30 #1: "ok" *smiles*
PB 30 #2: *smiles*

Another thing that happens a lot is categorizing. People here are friends, which is nice and great. The problem is that they tend to have their OOC relationship mixed with IC relationship (aka my experiences with paladin/evil wizard looting party, etc...). So basically, they OOCly (tells, party) join up at the very beginning and go out hunting. If there is someone new, there is hardly a chance for them to join up with the old dogs. Naturally, there are players that have no problems with new players, alas, a majority rather stick with the old friends. No big science here, it's logical.

I think the best way to get accepted by the old dogs is playing only one character, two tops. Build a name for them. As Lasci said, don't expect to be a hero like character if you power run yourself to 30 in one week.

I've been here since 06 (left for a year though) and I've only had one maxed level character ever. And it took me 2 or more years to get there too. Some of the funnest RP I've ever had has been while not maxed. Hell, a lot of it has been while not even epic.

I love the RP I get while I'm in lower levels, it's some of the funnest RP to me. RP can be found at all levels though. RP never stops happening as long as you keep doing things with your PC. If you do things with your PC, you -will- find fun things to do, no matter if you're a level 3, 16, or 30.

The trick to having a character that sticks around for you, I find, is in developing the following things:

1. A good background story before you start.
2. A detailed and complex personality before you start.
3. Set some starting goals, again, before you start.
4. Set further goals as you move forward.
5. Allow your character to grow as you move forward.
6. Go out and meet new people sometimes, if your PC would do that.

I absolutely and completely disagree with the idea that RP begins at max level. Similarly, I absolutely and completely disagree with the idea that RP ends once you reach max level.

The problem I have is that the difference in fighting prowess when there's more than a couple of levels between you is so ridiculous that it's hard to RP around unless you're in a no-PvP area or it's otherwise all fluffy. That doesn't mean that kind of RP is bad, but it's certainly not all there is to Amia.

Interaction !

The low level rogue I created 2 weeks ago is doing fine!

She enters some towns and alot of people are already wary of her as she has the reputation of being a pickpocket.

I find it great.

But a challenge too, as some chars will flee from her Icly because of that.

But at least she's starting to have a name. And will scheme her way into and even worse reputation probably.

Playing a character with flaws, having goals, developping RP towards those goals.

My character's greatest wish is to "be accepted the way she is". It isn't too fleshed out, it's rather vague for the moment but it could lead to her joining a faction, who knows? Only time will tell.

Give yourself time. I have the firm belief you can't throughly flesh out a char's personnality in a week.
Go with the flow. See how things turn out. Spend whole evenings once in a while with no "adventuring" at all.

Ask yourself once in a while ... what would be fun for the player(s) interacting with me? How could my character, with his personnality/flaws/beliefs/strengths/etc contribute to the RP going on.

And when in doubt on "how to develop your char" inspire yourself from someone you know, a famous character from some movie, book, steal a little of this and a little of that. Don't just copy though. Put some personnality traits you'd like to have, some that annoy you the most, etc.

Never had a L30, and feel no rush to reach there. If Amia doesn't start till then, well.. who knows what I've been doing. Been here for a long while now, including a long break. It certainly wasn't plan/grind "oh, this is a strong build but now I'm bored" *repeat*. One is almost 30 now, the next.. I don't remember, as I don't play them - maybe a 10?

And just because there is a different set of numbers on a sheet somewhere, it doesn't mean that your character is sealed in stone, immutable forever more. They can, and should still develop, react to their environment. Influence and more importantly be influenced by things. Unless you play a Paladin. I suppose it stands to reason for them to be fairly solid 'cardboard cut out' types (not meant as an insult in this particular case, they are what they are. It's the ~other~ cardboard cut out characters that I'm not mentioning much that should be). Meaning, zero growth, and a real fearlessness. Action hero junk.

Essentially, Rollplay development ends at 30 (No more levels, No more XP's! No more super feats!!), but Roleplay development doesn't end until they are (permanently) dead.

This thread is so weird - I love to level a character, It's fun to grind all the way to 30 and sometimes quite sad when you finally reach it.

Yeah, but how do you know for sure that the ornery guy clad in black is max level?

It's the assumption that everyone around you is or will be max level very soon which gets people climbing the levels like Spiderman on speed. ;)

Do you mean that one that hasn't been seen anywhere other than a few second long encounters while they rushed to hit 30, and now stand there looking like a fully-buffed Christmas tree on acid, whilst holding a red glowing/green drippy rapier/scimitar?

Still, different strokes for different folks. I think monster killing is dull, and know that conflict =/= pvp. And I will hostile anyone that disagrees, and [rants off into the distance].

Levels are over-rated. Low or high, it's the character that counts.

You can have full Christmas lights and drippy as soon as level 17. That's just a little over half way. ;)

This. And I think about what faction I would like a character to be involved in, what job system job they would take. Most importantly I like to have something for the character to do. Usually I try and think of ways to include other characters.

Now having a level 30 going around looking for a specific piece of jewelry and gathering lesser mythals to rename them for tokens for faction members may not sound fun to everyone but I'm having a great time doing this. And it's taking for-ever because my character keeps running into folks to RP with.

Go out and learn something new, have another character teach you. Join a cause. Find another job system job to try out. Research something asking others for help. Oh and explore. Just the other day I found an area I hadn't been to with that character before. It was fun because I took my time.

Most of all enjoy yourself :)

I find myself trying very hard to not facepalm at some of the replies in this thread. But, I have to remind myself that somethings simply just do not apply to me, given how I play the good ol' game of Amia.

If someone let's RP stop at level 30, they are sadly missing out.

I've been on this server for over six months and have never ever been buthered for no apparent reason.

Maybe I was lucky aye?

If someone PvPs without following the protocol, report them for it. Getting to level 30 isn't going to help you much against someone who breaks the rules.

It's understandable to be afraid but if someone did engage in random butchery without RP, they'd be under the ban hammer in a short period of time.

Na, not totally. Some character types can get by without much or any PvP. Others get in tons of it.

My new PC has yet to be in any PvP. My Kellie has only been in about 3 PvP moments in the 2-ish years I've had her. My main, gets in PvP quite a bit.

It's a matter of their personality types and the roles they feel they play in the world. New dude is an artist and not a fighter, Kellie is very calm, main is zero-tolerance. Go figure.

It doesn't need to be maxed, I just said more than a couple of levels, although I should have said more than a handful, really.

The IC evidence could come from watching them fight spawns, casting spells, summoning companions, movement speed, shapechanging and so on. If you see someone effortlessly stomping spawns that effortlessly stomp you...

Sounds like a pathetic excuse for powergaming. With rather harsh penalties (yeah, harsh) and strict rules about PvP, you cannot be PvPed by anyone unless you agree to that. And, of course, unless you are playing a rude, annoying tard, but hey - these guys are dying IRL too, so ....

I'm not the greatest roleplayer around for sure, but I've had level capped characters on servers for NWN1 and NWN2. I have retired none because I still enjoyed playing them and roleplaying through them. I think the phrase that sums it up best for me is that playing and progressing a character is a journey. To me the journey doesn't stop when you can't stuff anymore XP into a character. Playing and progressing doesn't stop at level 10/20/30/40 imo. Your character still should be a, dare I say, living and breathing being with wants, desires, and dislikes. Like the others state those wants, desires, and dislikes should be turned into... Roleplay. Of course a Paladin doesn't stop fighting against X because he's level 30, play that bad boy and make a difference, bend worlds to your will, make the Staff alter the mod due to things you've accomplished, progress the server for the entertainment of both the players and the Staff... leave your mark. But most important, have fun and make sure everyone else is having fun.

Level 30 is all about goals. Setting goals to achieve and developing your character. Its about using your head to achieve those goals to, rather then simply killing anything in your way. Because the balance is level now, you have to be more creative in how you achieve things. Its also about your character exploring themselves. Deciding their place in the world.

Think of level 30 as that spot in life where you decided "This is what I'm going to do" the time you had to make choices and decesions that would solidify your direction in life. Its about creating a future for your PC.
