I might start with, I'm new to this server. I been here for about a month, but done my best to adapt. Now I have encounterd a situation that really confused me.

I was running with a party outside Brogenstein (my character is named Rym Hallesyn), heading to the giants when I met an woman (edited away her name) with 2 fiends summoned. I aproched her and here is what happend.

After posting the last msg she ran away, I dident even have time to respond. So the question is simple: Is RP optional when grinding?
I have been driven away from places and never questioned it, it seemed logical RP wise, but this confused me. When she started to talk about DMs it seemed like she played here long enough to understand the rules so there is clearly something I missed.

Is there or is there not a RP restriction where we can play?

A few things....

First off, welcome to the server and thanks for role playing

It is first come first serve on hunting grounds and the other character had a right to do that. Most people get the impression you are trying to steal their spot or PvP them if you follow them on hunting area.

We do have a rule on the server about posting specific events on the forums so people don't feel called out or offended. I would kindly ask you to remove the image, or edit out the names on said image.

I hope you stick around and enjoy more RP on the server, its a fantastic setting with a rich character history and a place where characters can and do make a difference in the world on a every day basis.

Lastly, roll with the punches my friend (RP = Roll with the Punches), if they do that act accordingly in character.

It's nopt optional, but you forced her into a PvP situation she didn't like. You were clearly hostile from the very beginning and in her eyes, you were using an RP excuese to force her to leave a hunting ground she had already claimed.

Gah. I hate this!
The Screenshot is what has happened to me several times - People hiding behind OOC Rules and justifying their RP With them. I KNOW i cannot force a player into Pvp - But comeon, I've had my paladin back away from two-three undead summoners just because their summoners did not want to fight over the hunting ground.

I hate it.

*Rant end*

I wish that the Hunting ground rule could be removed.

This is true, but it's also a terrible, terrible impression to have, especially in the given context: A dwarf in Brogendenstein. There are several other situations where it's perfectly legitimate for a character who may or may not be above or below your level to follow you around on things, such as Mulan characters in Khem, Triadic Knights around Kohlingen, the Dawnguard around Ne'sek, the Grove around Amia Forest and the bearby environs, and etc.

All that said: It is a first come first serve basis, as far as classically designated "Hunting areas" go. It was probably in bad taste for the person to immediately go OOC, in any case. Should PvP have happened, as awkward as it would have been, she would have been within her rights to 'keep' the area and keep going. I have my own opinion on the rule but I won't give it because I don't want to muddle up "The bottom line" that I'm giving in this post.

The bottom line is:

1. No, RP is NEVER optional. No matter where you are or what you're doing.
2. You may not take hunting zones from a player who was there first, without their consent OR they have already been through the entire area. If they are on a repeat trip, they are obligated to give up the area.
3. Don't be so offended and immediately go OOC when a dwarf in Brog asks you to unsummon fiends in the ancestral home of the Dwarves.

n.b. I have removed the screenshot. My apologies.

The rule and contention is not there so you can 'steal' hunting grounds away from people, so they can be 'fought over', so you can sate your need for a quick PvP 30 minutes before running off to work. The situation you describe is pretty much exactly why the rule is there: Because people would like to use their builds to justify pushing people around on an OOC level. And that is why many people go OOC so quickly, event though I dislike it when they do.

THAT SAID: OOC consent is not needed for PvP, because consequences carry their own actions. That does not mean you mindlessly smite people, of course, but that does mean you are within your rights to smite XYZ offensive thing if they have been given a fair chance to remove/repent/change their ways/attend Sunday mass.

Aye. I hate hate hate the rule ... But i understand why it's there - It serves a good purpose, even if it's abused sometimes.

*Sighs*
Realistically, You should be able to push people around
But in the sense of fairness and 'keeping players playing', you should't.

You have, again, neatly demonstrated why the rule exists: To stop folk like you from doing it because they can or want to.

I thought it's perfectly fine to kill anyone walking around with a devil given that your character doesn't really approve of their existence?

It is okay, yes. You just have to give them an out. That's still in the rules, just not the requesting permission beforehand part. You can't just run around and kill people just because your character would do that. Even if they're evil necromancers. The third rule of PVP always applies.

Rules wrote:
3. You must give the other party a reasonable chance to back down from the PvP In Character.

So while it was okay to approach and decide to PvP, you still have to give them a chance to run off or otherwise disengage. You can't force someone into PvP.*

*Unless they have it coming, as per rule number four.

Rules wrote:
4. IC Actions lead to IC Consequences. If you initiate a conflict (by insults or thievery, for example), you can't expect to get away with it. You cannot ignore other players' RP or declare it null.

At least we don't lose anything when certain players decide to go into action-server mode though, eh?

*disagrees about the ruling of RP being never optional.. I can, have and will continue to ignore PvP baiting trolls and their petty powerbuild ego-kicks*

Yeah but see, you can duck out of that in an IC way. Unless your character is rigidly built around 'I must smite X' or 'I must never back down from a challenge' you always have a way out.

No. Why humour them? Ignore them and they will go away!
Some people act in a certain manner to get little power-trips.. so My character is not going to be the facility for a numpty to get their smile on. Almost like entirely filtering them out of the channel.. they simply don't exist. Seems better than whining to DM's and then nothing happening anyway.

Luckily there are only 2 folks I have met worth this treatment. Otherwise I always just roll with whatever happens. RP is why we are here (well, most of us..)

Ignoring them is ...Pretty much a way to go OOC feelings over IC.

Disagree all you want: You can't ignore it OOCly as if they don't exist, because they do. IN the words of the internet's most famous dog: Deal with it.

Now you are just insulting us simply because we don't ban someone because you say so. Stop it.
