I'm curious if any other players would be interested in RPing an unusual Istishian sect that wants to set up a monastery in Uhm, on account of their Istishia worship. All classes welcome, though clerics and monks are of course preferred, because they're holier. PM me if interested, or just curious about the details; I prefer to keep it under the hat for now. Thanks.

A Monkery? Haha. Quite creative, though the word you're looking for is monastery. More monk stuff is always cool.

Are you making a mockery of his monkery?

I opened this thread to correct him on that, but then I saw him use the word monastery in his post.

Now I suspect it was a clever ruse to lure linguistic pedants to join his order...

I thought it was going to be an order of obsessive-compulsive people with a list of phobias as long as your arm. :(

I couldn't resist asking Mr Oogle, and what do you know, monkery is perfectly correct English. Also there's monkdom and monkship. I've never heard of either.

Anyway, regarding the actual topic: I smell water genasi.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Monkery

Since I'm beating people who want to get involved in a non-killy RP with a stick, I'm going to go ahead and just post what I've planned over the last few days, and put that out there.

Monk Note has set up residence in Uhm, to take advantage of the largest orchard he could find, and because the city happens to worship is patron deity, the wonderfully indifferent Istishia. Nothing says non-attachment like a god whose response to prayers is often, 'Meh.'

Monk Note will, naturally, attempt to spread his wisdom to the local population, and perhaps put small bits of wisdom on the corks of the bottles he passes out. The goal is not just to win Istishia converts - because the Water Lord doesn't seem to actually care that much about that - but to win people over to the monk's philosophy of life. Hopefully, this will net him some pupils. Which is where I was hoping players would come in.

Existing, established players are very welcome, but I also thought, hey wouldn't it be cool if people actually played novice monks who earned experience by studying and practicing rather than murdering goblins. Hopefully a DM or two could grace us with some bonus RP xp for the diligent students, but otherwise, hey hey, pick that fruit and make that juice! I'm thinking 'lessons' in theology and philosphy would take place while the students tended the trees and traveled to the juicer. This seems appropriately monastic.

I'm also thinking about making an old wizened character to serve as the stand in for the actual master of the monks, since it doesn't seem cool to me to volunteer my character as the leader. Lecturer on fruit studies, yes, but not abbot or whatever.

So I'm throwing that out there. Anyone who is interested in doing this kind of monkish, philosophy laden RP is very welcome. Characters of all walks are welcome as well - even those that think it's a load of bollocks; as long as you're there for fun, and not to throw dirt in people's eyes, I can totally see a reprobate student mixing it up with the others. So send me a PM if you're interested in more details, or just RSVP here.

He says with fingers crossed.

Whoever wishes to create more monk RP has my full blessings as long as they post their style in my thread! ;P http://www.amiaworld.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=33065

And go ATATATATATATATATA as much as possible.

I'm serious, though. Develop and post your styles, or I'll have my local super saiyan hunt your monks down, charge up for 3 episodes and go kamehameha on your respective faces! >_>

My monk uses the ancient and well practiced art of shoot-them-in-the-face-until-it-isnt-funny-anymore-and-it's-never-not-funny-fu.

I was just poking around in the rest menu and found the alternate combat animations option ... oh my god, so awesome. I'm so angry I didn't know about this when I was actually doing a lot of fighting with my monk. So, yes, I'll try to write something up. If you come to the orchard ...

I would like to see this happen. I think Uhm as place has great potential as monastery place etc. It is peaceful and small, calm place.

Which of the DMs is responsible of Uhm as area? If they want it done, they need to interact with the people of it and the leader as well (being NPC I think?).

Thanks for unlocking the thread.

I wasn't actually looking to build a proper monastery or anything, just get some RP around monk stuff going. If a DM wants to do something that's cool, but I can't really think of anything I'd ask for, other than people to RP with. I'm currently on a work trip, so I'll be back on Saturday and will try to get things going again then.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Monkery

Let it be known that monkeriness will soon begin. I am designating Tuesday the 28th of June as Monk day in Uhm. Monks of all types are invited to discuss philosophy, techniques, pressing issues regarding robe maintenance, and more! Non-monks are also invited to discuss those same issues with the monks, as well as seek spiritual guidance in these troubled times. Monks make much better confidants than clerics because we don't push dogma and try to convert you. We listen. We hear you. We value you as an individual, and help you meet and overcome personal challenges.

Seriously, if nothing else, just come through Uhm and engage in pick up RP around the (assuredly) colorful personalities that will be present. Hope to see people there.

Also, free juice.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Monkery

Just as a suggestion, you may want to look up on the recent happenings in Uhm before you suggest such a thing to be held there.

And as well, might want to put posters and whatnot IC, because it would be very weird with people just "knowing" to show up there without any IC notices and interaction.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Monkery

Well, ICly, the monk is not likely to self promote, or to leave his trees, so while you are quite correct in your points, it's just not in character. Besides, what better reason to visit Uhm than to poke in and see what all the commotions been? Adventurers love to meddle.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Monkery

Well, there is one way or another make it work IC, I'm sure. You can figure it out. I can't say I'm just going to have my monks show up to an event that I have no idea how or why they came across that information.

And as well...really... look at the current evens of Uhm. Well, if your character would, that is. It may not be the friendliest place available to a significant amount of monks at this instant.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Monkery

Just wanted to give a quick shout to everyone who ran into the silent monk today. Some where in Uhm, some were in fist fights, some were doing their damndest to get away from him, but it was pretty excellent. Hope those that were accosted enjoyed it as well, and that we can, perhaps later this week or next week, drum up a few more visitors to the fair orchard.
