Our two-three small Ruathym isles are not among the large canon islands. Wiltun, Caraigh and the Monolith are in the Ruathym region, but they're original.

Why couldn't people think so? To claim otherwise and to think such a site would be relevant IC evidence is just utter failure at any philosophical or theological thinking.

Think of new players Iron, when I was new to the server, and very green to D&D lore (mind I still am but much better off than before) my first character thought all the gods were a joke, people clinging to false hopes, but as he went on, he learned

Why just new players? Why wouldn't such a character be legitimate and plausible for a veteran lore buff? People seem to have this strange notion that because priests wield spells and get messages from somewhere (in a world full of all sorts of magic and powerful beings), everyone recognizes the gods as gods. The concept of a god is something quite different than "some powerful extraplanar dude", after all. It involves existential and moral relevance, acknowledged authority and awe at a completely different mode of existance. Being powerful doesn't make you a god in any sense of the word, and it's perfectly believable (and rationally defensible) that people would deny the gods in the Realms. Do you think Nietzsche's arguments, for example, wouldn't be possible and powerful in Faerûn just as well? Or would Kierkegaard applaud empirical evidence of the Time of Troubles as decisive to a life of faith?

Would you say that a character with a reasonably high Lore skill would be foolish to ignore the existence of the gods, Iron, especially in light of the Time of Troubles? And that, conversely, a person with little to no lore knowledge could be ignorant enough to believe they do not exist and do so rationally?
Note that I aware that by referencing "the Lore skill" I am intentionally making things difficult, because all we have to work with here is NWN. In PnP, there is no Lore, just Knowledge Arcana, Knowledge History, Knowledge Brickbuilding, Knowledge Ancient Civilizations, Knowledge Eurythmics, Knowledge Rape Fantasies Popular in the 11th Century DR, etc, and therefore you could arguably have a high lore skill but have it focused in pretty much everything BUT knowledge of the deities' existence.
There's no hidden meaning to the question, I'm just curious. It's been on my mind recently that in the Forgotten Realms someone would have to have been asleep during the ToT or just come up with some alternate rationalization (they weren't gods, they were aliens!) to claim the gods don't exist.

because in FR there is a god of apathy, a god of nihilism, a god of logic, and every other portfolio you can think of that an atheist would try to use as his argument. sometimes even rolled into one or two gods. And then there is The Wall. No one wants to end up there and as we have the power of resurrection we have indisputable proof of what happens when you die. there is no guessing. kelemvorites should be in charge of killing atheists as well as necromancers but theres surely many many less of the former. It seams to me 100% obvious to anyone who grew up in that world could nto dispute the existence of deities.

Actually the gods in DnD are just that Iron. Extremely powerful individuals that have obtained a very high level of power. They aren't completely omnipotent, they must abide by the laws that bind all deities, the laws of the planes and so fourth. There are examples of other beings with the same level of power that aren't called 'gods' at all, like the primordeals. Gods are created because someone manage to obtain that power, and gods are destroyed because someone stole it or 'won' it trough their laws. Gods are just as bad as devils, siphoning their powers off people by forcing worship, and if they don't, they go to feed the nice and pretty wall to make sure nobody really escape their web. The fey have a similar pyramid with their courts that breed power to those up top, and some of them have become so powerful they got their own divine portfolio and became a deity. Then the more worshippers they manage to get a hold of (and eventually have their souls sent to their realm), the more power they end up with. Hells.. kill off all their worshippers so they don't have any left, and they can literally die from it.. At least the devils are honest about all of it and usually give you a favor in return for that power Big difference is that gods have divine portfolios, most devils don't. The only god that I'd call an actual god, and not a powerful creature with a portfolio of power and souls galore, is likely Ao. Why? Because he doesn't need worshippers to survive, and sits at the top of the food chain. What's his plan, his idea, alignment, goals? No one really knows! He just did that shit, then babysit the deities so they don't act like the puppetmasters they are. (Well. .don't overdo it!) I dunno but in my mind that sounds like someone that's actually in power, and doesn't even bother ruling or drawing in lesser creatures for his amusement/power.

Quote: as we have the power of resurrection we have indisputable proof of what happens when you die I'll be happy to nitpick: You don't remember what happened when you die and get resurected so technically this does not work. And since the point of this topic was answered, I really don't see why we need to have yet another argument on whether or not the gods exist or why or whatever....

You're still missing my point. There are dozens of ways in which someone could doubt the nature, justification, relevance and even existance of the gods. You describe gods in an extremely reductionist, nihilistic and OOC way, Gravemaskin. That is not what the concept of a god would mean to a mortal whose life everlasting and all hope is invested in that transcendental being. To doubt a god is to doubt all the mythos and ethos that goes with the faith, to doubt their existential relevance in your life and the moral justification of their superiority.
There's no reason to assume the concept of gods and the nature of religious faith is any different in FR than it is in real life, just because there happens to be guys who can do magic tricks.
The Time of Troubles is fairly distant and quite chaotic, so I'm not sure what kind of evidence that would give. But yes, I think it's fair to say that almost everyone in civilized areas would be aware that something happened, powerful and mysterious beings walked around and people believed they were gods. In a world where magic is tangible, atheism wouldn't be naturalistic and empiristic like we're used to. The existance of "gods" and the powers of clerics can be explained in many magical ways. "They're aliens" is not an unreasonable call to make, really. They're extraplanar beings like the ones you can summon with a spell scroll, just a little stronger. All the mythos of the faith could be a mortal hoax, misinterpretation, or the creatures' deception. Maybe there aren't even individual persons up there, just random manifestations of power and belief. Or maybe the "gods" really are what the myths say they are, but you deny their different metaphysical nature and their justification to be somehow above you, arbiters of your destiny. In fact, the more real the gods are, the harder it gets to justify their authority. And without acknowledged authority, a being is not a god in anything but a game-mechanical sense.
So to answer Yossarin in short: I think it would be foolish to ignore all evidence altogether, but the issue is so covered in dogmatism, lies, fantasies, rumors and philosophical problems that I think you can reasonably come to just about any conclusion that somehow accounts for the dubious phenomena. I like to believe atheism is a viable attitude in the Realms, but it wouldn't be the kind of scientific and naturalistic atheism we know - of course, because the supernatural is everyday. We have plenty of intelligent, rational people in the real world who believe we can't actually know anything about the real world - if it exists at all. It's not much of a stretch to present convincing arguments against the gods in Faerûn.
Tsukasa1991: I won't get further into your post, but I'd just like to mention that characters certainly don't have "indisputable proof" of much anything supernatural, let alone the afterlife. Kelemvorites may preach their beliefs, but don't think their case is somehow more convincing IC than someone else's just because we know it to be "true" OOC.

This topic has really given me some nice ideas about a character who takes personal offense at the way the world is structured, so keep up the conversation!

But yes, I think it's fair to say that almost everyone in civilized areas would be aware that something happened, powerful and mysterious beings walked around and people believed they were gods. In response to point 1, I think that I agree more or less. My personal OOC understanding of the Gods of FR is that sure, sometimes a single person who was once mortal can take over portfolios and ascend to godhood, but that once this occurs that person more or less loses their old identity. They come to embody those traits which they dictate just as those traits occur in the natural world. Tempus calls the shots in battles, because there is always going to be battle and battles usually end with one person emerging on top of another, and if they should end in a draw then it is because Tempus decided that also. It is easy to make the connection that this God is just representing the natural way that events unfold, and I think that all of the other Gods in Forgotten Realms are meant to also represent the natural world. Tempus could have been your next door neighbor before he was a God and it would make little to no difference because your next door neighbor won't exist any longer either way. In response to point 2, I think I agree and disagree. At a certain level, as we saw above, scores of mortals witnessed firsthand two giant deities battling each other during the time of troubles, and of course they witnessed a lot of other stuff going down all over (that I am relatively uneducated about), but for example Cyric wielding Mask as a sword etc etc... these events are open to interpretation, however anyone who witnessed the followers of Torm sacrificing themselves to buff their deity is going to reach some understanding that what those followers believed in DID aid that deity in his efforts to enforce his ideals for the world. Two cents.

A PC that doesn't believe in the gods existing are perfectly fine concepts for PC's. However, I reserve the right to believe that PC rather stupid, because of the overwhelming evidence. Stupid is a valid PC concept though.

It can all be summed up into one nice neat little package.
In the Forgotten Realms gods exist. Period.
Anything else is pure conjecture and intellectual grandstanding. So, unless someone has something concrete to add that is actually supported by lore and not modern philosophy, theology or any other -ology and is driven and cited by pure ole' fashioned AD&D canon lore, then I think this is heading to a lock.

They do not lose who they were, they just become something more in addition to what they were. In fact, sometimes there is a lot of confusion and things get muddy and it causes problems. I personally don't think this is a topic that is deserving of a lock either way, considering that this is all civil argument and comparison of logical ideas without anyone getting really temperamental or needlessly argumentative. With that said, I would like to make a side point here that in game we are not expected to speak in Old English or Shakespearean English or Cordorian English or anything; we speak very modern English IC in our attempts to create a realistic game world in the only way that we can really claim to know how to do accurately. I personally think (and welcome disagreeing statements, if they help me play in game more realistically and/or assist others on the server with enjoying RP more) that it is to be expected that people will use modern philosophical and theological thinking inside the game world in their attempts at portraying a character, because those things are quite interesting to modern people such as we the players, and the only purpose of a RP server is to have fun... interesting stuff is fun. Someone had to think of modern ideas for them to occur, so there is no real reason why they shouldn't exist in game since this is a fictional setting to begin with. As an additional point on what I just said above... modern thinking cannot go unsupported without creative ideas to tie it into the Forgotten Realms concept of "deity". For instance, I could see a character claiming to be atheistic in saying that Gods are merely representations of natural forces in the physical world and are hopelessly the victim of their own portfolios lacking reasoning thought, however I could not see anyone convincing my characters that the Gods are not real.

How do you know they exist? Couldn't the game designers have lied to you? Or, if we take the attitude that they're trying to describe an autonomous (if fictional) world, couldn't they have been mistaken? And more importantly, is this evident to every PC? You can't even say "god" - let alone "exist" - without applying modern philosophy and theology, unless you deliberately want to fall victim to ignorance. The definition is far from trivial, and its consequences are confusing. RP should always incorporate and creatively toy with themes from the history of our culture, from the Antiquity to modern times. The setting is the bare bones on which to project our wildest ideas. I personally can't imagine a character more boring than one who has no connections to our modern world, nothing experimental and playful about him thematically, just a pure representative of "The Setting." In any case, the existance of gods is not under question. It's pretty trivial as an OOC question. We're brainstorming for possible character concepts and defending viable IC attitudes from OOC scorn and ridicule, which is extremely beneficial to our RP culture.

i dont mind people doing it oocly, but icly...all my chars think people who dont belive in gods are nutters..hells one of them forcefully dragged one to the salandrans to have them locked up in the mental wing...the other char was a great sport about it too

Justin Thyme was told in Cordor that all of the gods are dead.

theres nothing stopping your character from proclaiming the gods are simply mortals with insane powers that hoard over the rest of toril there are also characters that take faithlessness rather seriously, that said I remember what talos did to cordor waay back and any such similar intervention of the gods is hard to shrug off. unless you believe in materialisticalness icly and just oblivious to the signs. short of their avatar walking directly to you and showing off.

People thinking that nonbelievers are "nutters" is not a theme unique to the Forgotten Realms.

I have a character who fully knows that the gods are real, she simply refuses to follow them, thinking them the eternal versions of flighty, temperamental toddlers.
Where does SHE fall? (Other than the Wall)

Where does SHE fall? (Other than the Wall) Not at all. Otherwise Ur-Priests wouldn't exist!

Where does SHE fall? (Other than the Wall) She fails because even if she refuses to have faith and worship one of them for whatever reason she might have, she's still bound by their trappings. Solution? Feyification.

I had a strange thought, why exactly is kelemvor's job partially to bind the faithless into said wall? it leaves little room to dream, and if you die young well, your probably screwed. if you fight for an ideal, a country, still not good enough, bind to wall..
the whole thing seams more like one of banes traits, fear this, worship something, or be a wall. not much of a choice there, not that it is absolute common knowledge icly, but you gotta keep it in mind ooc because death effects everyone.
I guess I don't quite get the point of it.
nnninj....ur preists are faithless that steal divine power from the gods. I say faithless because they don't worship the gods but know of their existance.
fey death is just wow, "like they never existed", but I guess its in their nature of not causing unbalance

This discussion is spiraling into what the Lore thread is for. Perhaps take your questions there?

Because AO says so. This was covered in the books about Mystra and Kelemvor, the two gods who specifically had the "Human Problem" early on in their deityhood.
