This has bugged me for bloody ages. I don't know how many of you have genuinely never spoken to someone who is most tactfully called a person with additional learning needs, and least tactfully a retard, but in the main, you don't get the 'me want smash now' guff that 99% of INT-dumped half-orc Barbs give you. The dialogue options in the NWN campaigns are the offenders I have in mind here because that's what everyone bases their RP on, and they're bad examples. You get very simple sentences, but they're in the first person and they have the definite or indefinite articles and the infinitive. Adults do not sound like toddlers because their IQ is low; they sound like adults with a limited vocabulary and very little use of the abstract. I know it's a lot harder to RP around a stupid person without the flag of the babytalk, and I know it leaves the door open for cheesebags to dump INT and sound like Oscar Wilde* but it bugs me anyway. *Admittedly this isn't anything like as prevalent as charming people with dumped CHA because of skillpoints and Improved Knockdown. |

The point that you need to be intelligent as a person to pull off a dumb character well is pretty damn true. |

I currently RP a Half-Orc, Grakh. Truth is, I am not using 1st person when writing in his lines - instead I am putting his name, whenever he would refer to himself. To that I mix up the English words - almost forcing a different, tougher pronunciation of words and generally trying to make people laugh a bit, at his attitude and the way he speak. He talks simply, straight and doesn't understand some more difficult statements. Even if he does, the way he pronounces it doesn't match at all with the original meaning. Let me just throw a few examples: 'Oi! Vuy ledy mad? Be bad for skin.' - 'Hey. Why are you upset? It's not good for your skin.' *Someone asks Grakh how he has been doing* 'Ummmm... Be not lot. Grakh ask ledy for drink. Den drink drink. Be smeil and fun ol'teim. Be guud teim!' - 'Hmmm. Not much. Just asking ladies for drinks. Then drinking them. Smiling and having fun with them. Good times!' 'Be not leik Grakh be tard. Grakh jost Orc. Ogly wun. Oooooi... so ogly.' - 'It's not like I am dumb. I am just an Orc. An ugly one. *sighs* So ugly.' 'Oi! Ledy be lotist byooty!' - 'You are the most beatiful woman in the realm!' So this and there is also a question of actually giving your 'tard' a personality, hence that what RP is about, right? Well... did I succeed? You're more than welcome to RP in-game with me. |

There's several kinds of displaying low intelligence for characters With Kammy, who is most assuredly not the brightest bulb: Not big words, or confusing big words for other big words. Very literal translations of things. Lack of 'common sense'. Needing things explained things in a certain way to understand. And sometimes 1 + 1 + 2 = Bagel. Marks of a low intelligence: *Poor Emotional intelligence: Ergo, identifying your own and other's emotions and acting on them. Just not getting why someone might be mad, or a general lack of understanding emotions themselves. *General Communication break downs: Not a good command of the meaning of words, small vocabulary, confusion of words for other words. - Like Moo said. *Poor Rational thought - Problem solving - logic. Not being good at following the course of complex actions. Example: Do not place the metal fork in the outlet. Why? Placing the metal fork, which is a conductor of electricity into the outlet will complete the electric circuit, causing the current to travel through the fork into your body. It can cause a seizing of the heart rhythm and cause it to stop. Okay, so circuits are evil, where do we kill them? VS Putting forks in that can kill you Oh. |

Thank you! I'm glad someone else feels this way. Pronoun confusion is a cliché in representing stupidity. Though I've always been a little forgiving when it comes to monstrous races like goblins and kobolds and orc-variants raised not speaking Common, because pronoun confusion wouldn't be too out of the ordinary for someone speaking pidgin Common. But in this instance, you see, it isn't about lack of brains, it is about lack of exposure to the language (which may be a result of lack of brains, but even a moron can eventually learn to form simplistic yet grammatically correct sentences). |

I have great ones, and sad ones and bad ones and good ones. And seriously? Just because someone has developmental disabilities or are "cognitively impaired", it does not make them stupid. They may not work like we work, but don't think for even ten seconds they don't know how to manipulate the shit out of you. |

My INT's not nearly high enough for that shit) Exactly so. Referring to yourself in the third person without any particular reason is especially annoying to me. Besides, saying "Bob be hungry" requires you to understand that "to be" is the infinitive of the verb "am". You're more likely to have heard people say "I'm hungry" rather than "Oh, to be hungry is a horrid fate" so you'd have no reason to use the latter. I wish people were a little more sensitive to detail and context. The misconception that using some slang related to ethnicity or social status is a sign of intelligence, is quite prevalent too. Saying "I ain't seen no sunshine since I don't know when" doesn't make you stupid, it just shows you're in touch with a lively spoken language. Besides, anyone quoting Kant wins the topic by default, and makes me feel warm and fuzzy. My first true love. <3 |

I would just like to pop in and say: Kudos for this thread. I have never played a low INT char, and I would not exactly know the right way of going about it. This sort of thread should hopefully help others to elaborate their RP of such characters, and so enriching the experience for us all. And, yes, I've learned some good points. The stereotype is, as said, 'low INT = babytalk' or at least something along those lines. I think that low WIS is a little easier to play, as that reflects a lowered ability to reason. Course, I could be wrong as I tend to flip the differences between INT and WIS sometimes, haha. Anyways, carry on! I hope this continues to be a good topic ^_^ |

I knew the Kant reference would tickle Iron... My very broad rule of thumb for WIS is: Low INT, Low WIS = do something stupid, get hurt, keep on doing it. Medium/High INT, Low WIS = do something stupid, get hurt, never do it again. Low/Medium/High INT, high WIS = don't do the stupid thing in the first place. In other words: WIS is overpowered. Nerf! |

As far as I understand it, low WIS is like being someone who isn't aware of their surroundings so much, and has little empathy/understanding when it comes to communication. Low INT means the person is uneducated and perhaps not very bright even if they possess general understanding of things. |

I only ever did the "typical cliche dumb" once on Amia. And it wasn't because the PC was dumb, it was because he knew that his race was expected to speak in "baby talk" so that's what he fed the world. He was actually very articulate, well spoken and intelligent. Funny enough, while people seem to apply and expect "baby talk" from this race, the race is actually known to have just as many likely a chance at being intelligent or "average" as a human or an Elf or Hin, ect. He used it as a tool of manipulation. And it worked a lot of times. My current not-so-bright PC doesn't do baby talk. The PC simply makes use of simple terminology, rather than sounding all dumb. Well, I guess it could be argued that the PC sounds dumb, but only because of the accent, not the word use. In any case, I totally agree with the Cow. Well said. That's right, I called you a Cow... Cow... |

Low/Medium/High INT, high WIS = don't do the stupid thing in the first place. In other words: WIS is overpowered. Nerf! This is just all too true. I usually play medium/high int chars with 8 or 10 wis. Mainly because low wis get you stuck in stupid situations sometimes or can make you shoot the bad guy in the face, while he monologues. This is why in my opinion, people with low int shouldn't run around with bad grammar(and if they have to, make people with poor english skills do it, like us non natives Instead people with low int should charge trough the firegiants 10 times in a row, burn their arses off.. and never connect the dots to wear the FGK belt. Sadly this will never happen, even if it would be proper 9 times out of 10 with a 8 or lower int char. Personally though, I like to rank Int as IQ >_> Pretty simple really, this system I imagine. 10 is 100 IQ, so average. 9 is 90 8 is 80(mental retardation) and so on. When scaling upwards, add 5 per point. So 14 int = 120 IQ. For everything above 20 int, add 1 rather than 5. So 20 int = 150 IQ. (140 or more = genius) 40 int = 170 IQ. Why 1 point per ability after 20? Because anyone landing north of 200 will be amongst the smartest people -ever-, and I doubt anyone have the RP capacity to play them right Same thing can be applied to Cha, except for social intelligence (SQ), rather than IQ. (Because Cha is not just supple skintone and facial symmetry!) I'm rather fond of using my system for int up there, because it also helps dictate how much int I'm gonna get for one of my chars, rather than skillpoints doing it. I.E my devillish schiemer has 16 int and 14 wis, landing him well within the superior intelligence evil villain area, and enough wis to be reflected. I really wish some people would RP low cha as something other than being ugly, really. In example, have a 6 or 8 cha person suddenly shout out or do something not socially acceptable. My old 8 cha ranger had absolutely no apathy for people, no social skills beyond simple conversation (met his wife by attacking and tackling her) and was likely to punch you in the face if he thought you gave him a threatening glance or were 'sniffing' around his mate. Gralg would be the perfect example of what happens to a char when you got low int, low wis AND low cha! Running around and humping trees as he does, then ask for splint-removal. |

This is how I play CHA for my main, Tyrus. He has a 10 CHA, so average, but he is slightly handsome in a rugged sort of way. Essentially, visually he's about a 12 CHA. But, the trade off is his neglect of social skills in some aspects. He is not afraid to speak his mind, even if he is going to say something that could be deemed offensive (not that he's cruel, but honesty I mean); his 'way with women' initially was slightly flawed and he was/still is prone to becoming uncomfortable in certain situations, though since his initial friendships he is learning to overcome that slowly; and, damnit, he just stands there half-menacingly in dark full plate and a hood watching in silence (creepy!). For the longest time Feo got to roll around with 10 cha and it was nice I always feel a tiny bit guilty for nerfing my cha for those extra points. Then I remembered how badly implemented NWN can be sometimes and dropped that shit to 8 faster then a flaming something your holding onto and want to drop. Plus he isnt the most social of people if you dont fit into the "Respond with sex/Respond with violence" catagories then he is rarely talkative. Being a pretty elf with the personality of a cheese grater works for me. Dont think any character ive ever had has had less then 10 int though, or 12 for that matter. Acting stupid is just Reward<Effort especially since adventurers usually need to be a fair bit smart so as not to get smashed to pieces by a stone-wall trap, or a deadfall, or eating something that has more spots on it then a cheetah. |

I don't and never have bought that IQ can be measured. black holes are still unproven theory. etc. but as for hitting close to 200 iq, you'd expect the most likely way for them to solve something would be to stump their opponent rather than blow them to peices. also would make them seam more distant to the 'regular' world who probably don't get what they are trying to say. Logicality wrote: I don't see how IQ is any less abstract and difficult to relate than INT. I bet you couldn't guess even near the IQ of most of the people around you. This pretty much proves my point, because beyond percieved intellect based from observation of the person, you don't know their ACTUAL intelligence or IQ. The only thing that you can easily observe in day to day activities is a person's social intelligence. So in short, you don't know their actual intelligence score, or IQ in my example, because you can't look at their statsheets. As such someone with 40+ int can easily come off as dumber than someone with just 20 but alot of charisma. It sort of brings out the "savant" situation, where you can have a less experienced lecturer easily teach others or explain things to laymen, where someone with ALOT of IQ but no social skills at all, fall way short and just look like a complete goof with numbers and nothing else. I've seen both examples on Amia really. |

Some are plenty pretty but can't open their mouth without offending SOMEONE. Int is just as hard to quantify, really. IQ is no judge. That's just a measure of how easily you learn. It's vague and not any indicator of the rest of your intellect. If anything, working where I do has taught me that intellect, like anything else about a person, is not just...one thing. Using a single number to denote it is just...a rough outline. THere's no right or wrong way to do it, save for going totally opposite just to be contrary. |

People that are ugly at first glance can become pretty to you once you get to know them. Perceptions get distorted easily. The entire intellect thing, well, I'm not going to say much about it. Plenty of things are anal already and I'll leave it up to the players how they wish to emulate their low intellect. It says in the discription; those with lower then 9 are unable to speak properly. What do you interpret as 'unable to speak properly' ? A savant (depending on the type of course) for example would almost speak in such a way, it sounds like a toddler, yet deadly accurate in their perceptions of abstract concepts. I'd love to see one of those walking about. There is a half-orc with low intellect that I RPed with on another server, which I'll always remember. The conversation simplified went along the lines of: Half-Orc: *looks up in the sky, notices it's starting to rain* Wetness is falling from sky. Others: It's called rain you idiot. It may of sound stupid and the orc probably seen rain before, maybe not.. who knows. Heh. I just love the simple interpretation of rain. |

simple way to RP poor command of language would be to have little understanding of past/present/future tense, no proper use of adverbs or possesive clauses (eg. 'coin is me' as opposed to 'the coin is mine'), limited and improper use of prepositions, prefixes and suffixs. No metaphoric or abstract concepts at all. Few adjectives; usually the same few used repeatedly out of context (eg: was taught 'pretty' to describe gold, hence valuable things are called 'pretty'. Not as a child but as one who has no other word for valuable). Imagine you are learning and forgetting the same language over and over. Perhaps gender specifics elude you or you cannot grasp a specific vocal mechanic (eg: cannot make vowel differentials with 'i' and 'e' or 'o' and 'u' and as such are easily confused by words that employ these sounds). Add all of these together with a little out right dumbness and you have a poor speaker. EDIT: grammer |

Just do yourselves a favor, 9 and 8 Intel doesn't mean your PC becomes Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man... ![]() "Uh oh... fart... uh oh..." |

First and foremost, IQ is pretty much related to intelligence, but only a few facets of intelligence. Your IQ is a measure of your problem-solving, spacial relation and several other factors. It has absolutely nothing to do with memory recall. You can have a perfect photographic memory and remember everything you've ever read word for word and still have an IQ of 100. You can never learn to read and have an IQ of 190. I'll add that there are several different tests for IQ and they can rank you completely different. I took the three big ones when I was going through college and ranked borderline genius in one, average in one and way above average in the third. So, IQ really isn't a concrete or useful quantifiable value of intelligence. Basically use your own experiences as a base. We've all ran across scary-smart people and people about as smart as a sack of wet mice. Take what stands out to you that makes them so smart or so dumb and apply it to your character. I've met people who talk no good and make with the not right wording of things, but they no of my country and come from the over there place of their own home where they no be speaking English and apply the grammar of their own language to English which makes things come out kind of awkward. |

There is some relation between IQ and memory, but you're right, it's not really very meaningful as a measure of intelligence, in the broadest sense. |

A friend had a Half Orc with an int of 14 that would refer to himself in third person. When corrected, Trog would say "Trog does not like personal pronouns." He would also spout the occasional "TROG!" |

When I played my Torg character most players assumed because he was a half orc and did not speak well he was of low intelligence. That was not true, he was just below average for an INT score but simply was not good at the common tongue. That, and the fact that his social skills were poor made him look less than intelligent. You had to spend time with him to understand that he was street smart but socially and culturally weak. |

Hahhaha. Uce is just mad because people are ruining his favorite characters. Aka: Stupid, drunk people. He's right though. Grakh is the only sub-par intelligence I've enjoyed very much. Third person isn't the most creative use of a low intelligence score, but I mostly figured it wasn't because he was too stupid to use first person-- it's because he didn't want to. Stupid people can be very stubborn. Smart people can too. I think it's a perfectly fine choice to make. |

This reminds me of my times with my Tiefling Barbarian hanging around with Robnar in the glory days. >.> A 14 INT Barbarian with a probable 8 INT Barbarian who also had 8 WIS.... but still somehow tougher with barely having any strength. Gya! At least he's well 'n' done, now. :3 "Don't go in tent." |

It's kind of a moot point. The RP is only limited to the player's own mental abilities. I would like to challenge any one to truly role play a brilliant mage with 30 int, a irresistible sorc with 30 cha or a an enlightened priest with 30 wis. All these characters are walking around Amia, but it is impossible for any of us to really reflect this level of god like mental abilities since none of us possess them in real life. All we can do is try. And that's what people do with the low stuff. No one is really that stupid, so don't really know how to act like that in character. As long as they try to emulate their mental levels as best they can and others get the picture it's okay. What is not okay is people running around with 8 int and talking like Shakespeare. People can only role play to their own role play abilities. Some people are great at it and some people just aren't. They shouldn't be criticized for it as long as they are putting in effort. |

Or on the flip side if someone with downs was RPing I doubt they would want to play as something that reflects their condition IRL. NWN is more of an escape for most then a reflection of their daily lives. |
