I'll explain a little bit so to give an understanding of why I am asking this. My archer, after killing an opponent, or seeing a dead enemy (one who is known to him as being an enemy or evil), will pray over the body to Solonor, asking they find peace in death, and during the prayer he will take an arrow from his quiver and jam it up through the persons jaw (since its the softest part of the head with no real resistance to the brain) all the way up into the brain, then snap off the rest of the arrow so about half of the arrow is stuck inside their head.

It is my belief that a simple raise dead scroll will not remove this arrow from the deceased skull, similar to removing the head of the victim. Because if you raise someone, the arrow head would still be in the skull, correct? I just want some DM or lore wise players to help clear up this question for me as it will come up in RP later on for me.

Decapitating works, Too!

Body is intact, it works fine. Nice try, though.

I'd argue that the arrow would be pushed out of the head somehow? Like the cork of a champagne bottle!

Nothing really to argue. I'm not going to get into the logistics of it. It's magic, it works. Raise Dead requires an intact body, so it works. Coming up with weird ass convoluted ways to keep people dead to me screams more that you have an overriding need to "win" and "Beat people" than anything else, in any case. I mean, sure, I have the resources to put every person I defeat, tied up but still alive into a lead lined coffin and drop that coffin a hundred knots out to sea and drop it overboard after casting stasis on them to make sure that they can never die, never escape, never be scried upon and thus never be seen, found or heard from again, and never be ressurected because they're not actually dead.

But I don't DO that, because it's dickery.

If you want to keep someone dead, keep the body in your sight. Simple as that.

But to answer the OP, yeah, it doesn't matter if you're skewered on the end of a 50 ft spike, body intact, spell works.

A better question to ask would have been how intact the body must be. A finger missing, an arm, a leg? My personal thought is anything smaller than a limb being missing is fine and will just be regenerated by the spell. It's when you start ripping off arms and decapitating that you require bigger guns, so to speak.

While the spell closes mortal wounds and repairs lethal damage of most kinds, the body of the creature to be raised must be whole. Otherwise, missing parts are still missing when the creature is brought back to life.

But what constitutes "whole" is the thing. A hand missing is technically not whole.

Most of the time, the rule of thumb is anything less than decapitation is fine. And for situations in both PvP and PvM, it's rather impossible to know if a finger was lost or a slab flesh was rended off in the middle of battle. The "what is missing remains missing" clause never comes into effect, unless someone specifically RP's removing it after death, most times on Amia.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. I can only tell you to angst-rage that became of a newer player years ago getting a hit in for 3 damage on me and trying to RP "*Cut his arm off*". Posthumously is the only time we really need to be concerned about body parts being lost.

I still think my idea of having the arrow pop out like a champagne cork is hilarious.

Fair enough. In one of my games, I'd require all vital organs to be present in some form for Raise Dead to work - so ripping out a corpse's heart and keeping it from would-be sympathizers would prevent RD from working. I've only seen decapitation on Amia, though.

*After Battle*

Paladin: Is this Jacks finger?
Cleric: Let me see... Nope.
Warrior: I found a leg!
Cleric: Thats a goblin leg!
Warrior: Oh.

As I understood it, it worked something akin to this. That technically in 3E say if someone was lungshot by an arrow and drowned in their blood bringing them back with raise dead, unless you mend that damage first, lets them drown to death once more. Horiffic!

On Amia where rules need to be changed, and the DMs are well within their right to do such changes, are in order to facilitate a working PW server and the fact none of us want to reroll a brand new pc after dieing every damn day. (I know some of you do and masochism is a terrible thing.) Raise dead works like a ressurection would and fixes the barebones of what ended you so further healing can be done on the living subject.

I thought, for the most part, we stopped decapitation rules after 15 people went around ganking people demanding they need resurection to live again?

ed: not that it can't work.

You thought like Caesar, then. I don't recall any roving pack of gankers nor any official ruling about decapitation. It's trusted that this is a little detail that the playerbase can handle on their own. At worse, what, you get killed and you don't get up 2min later on que? You have to wait a few min for someone to rez you or at least the attackers to go away so you can respawn?

Moral of the story is, don't count on everyone having Raise Dead to be your saving grace. Perhaps get your PC realize IC that maybe this fight isn't worth it out here in the backwoods middle of nowhere. Especially if you've pissed someone off to the point they want to decapitate you and leave you there not to be found. Even more, don't decapitate anyone without fully accepting that somewhere down the line someone may do it to you.
