| Post subject: | Aimian Thieves' Cant |
Hi this topic idea was inspired by the chat in the lexicon post that yoss started, and basically what i want to do is re-define Thieves' Cant for amia, as it has been said there are many different types of this in each and every city, and even each and every guild there are little changes, i thought why not put our heads together and think of any words or Thieves' Cant that we use icly now & and ideas that we might use to develop it. I also dont intend to keep the full list when its done, and hope to have DM remove the thread it if possible, so that once we have a full list of words it can be "Secreted" away an remain the property of the rouges of the island. (to reduce meta tho i know there will be some) Hear is a list of the words i use ( they have been taken from several sources and edited to reflect Amia a little) Pleas fee free to post your ideas to change them or add more. *list removed and kept confidential* |

Ran a thieves guild myself, once and we instituted a patter much like this. I like it. Oh, and by the way Thieves CAN |

I don't really use Thieves Cant enough to make a real judgment call on a list of words. I imagine it would become a bit annoying though having to shift back and forth from website to game just to say a sentence in thieves cant. Though I can also see that in the terms of a thieves environment the elitism of having a language like this would actually be appropriate. Unlike certain other environments on Amia... |

I approve of this I also like how you changed the guards thing to suit what was come up with in the Lexicon. =P |

[snip] I have a similar (same?) list of words copy pasted into my rogue's journal for rare use. I don't think it's something that needs to be strictly defined, though. Just loose terms that anyone could make up that're only understood if you're clued into the context of the conversation. |

You're correct, based on the source I have with similar words. This is also very true, Lorak. All sorts of thieves' cant can be designed and made to where only those who know the context of the use know what they mean. I've been fortunate to be around at least 3 different characters with their own forms of it, needless to say I was greatly intrigued and impressed. |

I think the reason behind the OP creating the list is because he's trying to create a formal version of Thieves Cant for Amia, to eliminate all the confusion people have when talking to each other in different dialects. However, would be better done IC, and not for the server, but individual cities where thieves are very present, and not displayed publicly for all to see. As the point of Cant is secrecy, if everyone knows it, why bother using it? It will have the same issue as Drow. Anybody can say their character knows the language. Where as most Cant is developed for specific groupings of thieves, such as guilds or brotherhoods. Its one of the few area's the elitism of using a private language actually makes sense and is very appropriate. |

I believe I can agree to that. Just didn't want to seem overly elitist. >_> |

Having a dictionary ruins the fun, which is babbling in a cockney accent in half connected sentences that are just subtle enough to be real but also double meaninged. |

This is actually a very bad idea. Trying to formalize and establish a de facto Thieves' Cant means that someone can easily metagame your Thieves' Cant in-game by referencing this damn list and ruin your plans. And if you cry metagaming on them for doing so, not only will you be the sorest loser in the world, you will also not have much of a case: the DMs will say, "You published the damn cant on the forums for everyone to interpret. How can we possibly differentiate what PCs do and do not know it?" That is providing you can even make a solid case for metagaming, when the person who metagamed your cant told a friend who told a friend who told a friend to tell a faction to thwart you, and then when they show up out of nowhere... Yeah. This is just...not a good idea at all, imo, and I won't really sanction a public listing of thieves' cant because it will only result in making the lives of thief/thief guild/underworld PCs SO much harder and messier OOC than it has to be. |

I'd propose instead seperate cants for operational groups (IE , the FLAG have their own Cant, Night Masks another, Shmoo Slayer's anonymous their own **Okay that last one doesn't exist, had to toss one in**)) to make it easier. You might invariably find commonalities, you might not. |

The FLAG is a respectable business! Don't metagame my acronym-cant. edit: also what Tormak said about talking nonsense and nodding sagely |

I'd ask the current list be deleted from the first post. As while all of it isn't really in use. Some of it is. |

| Post subject: | Re: Aimian Thieves' Cant |
right.. ill just remove my post, an use it as my personal list >.< still i don't see why there is a big deal with the metagameing, i guess if my character ever gets into a position were he can teach he will do so. If anyone wants to work on this with me icly, send me a tell im sure we will meet icly thought some shady dealing at some point and cant do this in-game for whatever thieves guild we end up in. An yes my idea was to create a "specific" or more common dialect of thieves cant, it was to be a "basis" for further individual development, so that we were at least all on the same page, as its a real pain trying to communicate with scalywags in the local tavern and Flag Wave something without "metagameing npc" or PC stamping all over you lol |

The list should go back up. It adds flavor for those that play rogues already and personally would be useful for my RP with both my rogues. The list should be public for players and the tongue limited in character to those that have more than the measly 1 lvl of rogue for the tumble dump at 30. I am appalled at the unwillingness to aid other players in such a fashion. Put up the list and watch how rich in flavor the rogue community will become. |

Only problem with that is, Thieves' Cant isn't a universal language.. every region, or group would have a different one. However, Talia I recommend y'clip it up a bit and put the list back up to give some ideas for groups to have their own languages they can develop. |

Please don't put it back up. Ruins the secertness of having a Thieves Cant variation. Someone should contact a rogue IC and get them to reveal a list of the cant they use, with meanings, if they wish to understand that particular variation. |

If Dust wants it you can PM it, but I'm strongly encouraging that it not be left hanging around on the forum in public because it will cause problems that you will want DMs to fix for you and we're not going to. |

Somehow I think it would turn books being disributed to every player in existance on a translation of every word of thieves cant... If Talin's drive went down, I'll work on compiling my list and send it to you. |
