It's not a big deal, but I've been thinking off and on about which forums (fora ) non-members are allowed to see. If you access Amia without being logged in, you can't see either Requests or PC Stories; you can see Libraries, Winya Ravana & Barak Runedar, but you can't access them. It seems to me that most if not all of these forums should be accessible to non-members. I suppose that access to PC Stories might continue to be blocked on the grounds that you need to meet and know the people to learn about them, but how many of the threads there are about characters you interact regularly with or events that your PC would know about? Not many, I'll wager. The Requests forum should perhaps be open to demonstrate to newcomers how the process works and the sorts of things they can do in Amia. If the argument for having Winya & Barak Runedar closed is that they're not accessible to many people, then by the same logic the faction forums should probably be closed as well. (In fact, I think it's slightly more likely you'd know about a place or faction than you would about a person's personal thoughts and trials.) Yes, BR is more remote physically and the dwarves tend to be taciturn little buggers, but it might be advantageous to showcase at least some dwarven-related RP to attract people who like to play the stunties - the same logic applies to Winya & the elves. And, as Libraries contains information about Amia in general (and that might, arguably, be available to people in other libraries, eg. on the mainland), it should definitely be open for viewing. If there's any currently-accessible forum that shouldn't be, it should be Off Topic, where we tend to discuss more personal things and give out more personal information, as 'among friends'. Libraries - Yes Winya - Yes Barak Runedar - Yes PC Stories - Probably Requests - Probably Off Topic - Maybe not Comments? Does anybody care?

I agree with you. I think non-members should have very limited access.

Im not so sure about the off topic thing.
I've sent a number of friends of mine links to that topic to show them what interesting / funny / crazy / horrorific things Amian's come up with. <.<

Faction forums are closed. The ones that are open are open by the factions choice.
As a faction leader who was (Till recently) based in a public Temple, I have to say I wouldn't want people to have access to my forum just because they have access to the Temple. A lot of stuff posted there is rather strict "for members eyes only".
However, I do have an idea. We now have the ability to have sub-forums on the website. Till recently Winya, Barak Runedar and a few others where closed because while being named after the city they are in, they where mostly factions. But, since we have access to sub-forums now. Perhaps opening the main forum and then placing the factions of the cities into sub-forums would be more logical. It also represents the hierarchy that likely exists within' these cities.
............................Winya (Main Forum, Public) ......................................| Black Archers (sub, Members) - Worshipers of Corelleon (sub, Members) - Mages Circle (sub, Members)
Kinda like that (I know the names are wrong)
Or perhaps.
Winya (Main Forum, Public) .....| Members Area (Sub, Members)

The general idea's been that forums containing IC spoilers are for registered users, but it's not consistent (city forums may have been specifically requested to be public). But this can be changed.
Too many subforums makes things extremely difficult to follow, mind.

Too many subforums makes things extremely difficult to follow, mind. I agree without some starting ground rules, subforums could get over compartmentalized and a move towards inclusion, rather than exclusion, should be rote, especially within a faction. However, I do see a place for it from my own experience. The mystran's and Tarkuul, have some very blatant meta-able information and it's been a pain when cetain research projects reach a point where it has to move to a pm mailing list. A sub-members forum would be perfect since IC'ly those projects are only member accessible anyway. Being a public forum has enriched and provided for many RP opportunities and in the end, that's what's important to me as a player. Sorry is this is rambling; no coffee yet.

I'm not suggesting that faction forums be opened. All I'm saying is that any forum that provides information about Amia (IC) and how it works (OOC), and that is currently public (including Winya, Barak Runedar, PC Stories, Libraries & Requests), should be available to non-Amians (ie. those not registered on the forums) - essentially, anything that isn't in 'Factions of Amia'. The one exception might be 'Off Topic', as I said, but if nobody has any concerns about that then we may as well leave it as is and make all 'Players' forums (IC & OOC) available to the general public.

Only the Requests, PC Stories, and Faction forums shouldn't be readable by non logged in players IMHO. Guests have no reason to see them.
While Barak Runedar, Winya Ravana, and Auctions should be made open to everyone. Any dwarf or elf characters can access these places; auctions are also mostly posted on all towns accessible by everyone anyways.
If any new character can read the notes/events in a forum, it'd only make sense to make that forum open to all.

Guest should see everything.
It'll advertise amia very well.

You can make a sub-forum off-site. Many people have and it works well!
Also, I agree that Off-Topic should be unseeable. I have pictures of myself in there!! Ahhhh

To my knowledge we're not having any issues with ley leakage, and really, I don't think there's a way to know. That research isn't what's gone to pms actually. The device work was, for the purpose of prempting any temptation, rather than as a response. My point was that I could see the benefits of a public forum having a sub forum for specific topics.

I'm bumping this ... I occasionally send my friends some of the more interesting discussions on the forums for them to read (from Off Topic, of course), and now it is asking them to register just to be able to read it. Is there any chance off topic can be opened up for people to read without registering?

If they play here, they can make an account.
If they don't just send them the link. These are not open forums, they are community forums, for the community that plays Amia. Not for you to throw around to everyone you know.

I just don't see why Off Topic is locked now, and why it wasn't before

I guess because I suggested it and somebody thought it was reasonable. There wasn't much discussion about it (though wolfking agreed with you). My thought was mainly to protect people's pictures and personal information they might divulge in the forums (eg. real name, location, sexual orientation, opinions on certain topics) from random snoops. And keep it to our own snoops!

I have to repeactfully disagree with that one Tormak. Myself has more then a few people that either don't have a copy of NWN or don't want one but none the less enjoy reading plot advances of Daniel and the PCs that are part of his life. Linking them through MSN has been the quickest way to allow them to enjoy following. Amia is a world of hundreds of stories and I think that PC Stories at least should remain open. Aside from those of us that share these plots with friends who like a good ongoing fantasy someone from the outside reading them might be moved to join in and get a copy of NWN because they can see that the server is a place of active RP. Conversly to everything I just said anyone could make an account anyway, reguardless if they have a PC or not on the server or ever intend to, and in my opinion that voids the whole arguement anyway. Points for Xavi thinking about people's personal info though
