Hey i caught a few other topics about this but just wanted to double check. You can make your char these classes but cant RP being a harper or a dragon knight without DM permission and without tracking down the few players that already have these classes to let you into their lil guilds? (Do not make this a rant please or i wont respond to it. Looking mostly for a DM response, thank you.)

Purple Dragons are the national army of Cormyr. Their leaders are sometimes Purple Dragon Knights, but even the FRCS says it's a generic class you can use for any army officer. Not every Purple Dragon commander is a PDK, and not every PDK is a Purple Dragon.

Purple Dragons are such a large and inclusive group that you can certainly play one and assume your PC served in the army in his background. Harpers are better left for DMs to comment on.

You can play a harper or a dragon knight from corymr, both with or without taking the classes. They are free for PCs to take and use as they like. A PC could take Harper Scout and not be a Harper.

But can i RP being a harper.. I saw on one post that to be a purple dragon knight for example you needed to speak to that persons char to become one because they were the only one and its considered being a noble. Basically i was trying to make a young hero type char and start with PDK and much later on touch into harper as it open up. But obviously im not taking these classes for build reasons. So i dont want to take them for build reason and not be able to RP them as being a Harper scout.. or rp being like a harper scout ect.

Edit- Basically i ask is do i have to contact these few players in game to fully rp me being apart of these classes? Or is it something i can even go through a DM with. I'd honestly scrap the idea if i have to track down someone who may or may not play a char anymore and email them ect for it. DM quests to become harper well.. i was gonna ask for a quest anyway : P Just want to get this all figured out before going through with it

I figure you mean can you be a harper scout level wise without joining the secretive guilds, ala shadows of undrentide style, except amia's version, which I know nothing of even oocly, bar a few scraps of icly mention of them in threads.

http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Harper_agent

Quote:
To become a field agent, one does not need to take this prestige class, although most have at least one level in it. The candidate must also be sponsored by a member in good standing of the Harpers and win approval from the High Harpers. They must as well be especially alert, good at persuading people and have knowledge about the people and places of an area while having some basic skill at surviving in the wild.

note that this is regarding lore not the nwn class option. so I guess the answer is you could both be a harper scout, and a member of the rather hidden guild when the time comes, or either or, both works.

purple dragon knights I am less familiar with. please note that the FR wiki lately sucks because of 4th ed info, but this page specifically states 3.5 is the core used.

so to put it simply yes, all is well, but finding the harpers could make for good RP in either case, rare and sly as they may be it makes sense to learn the secrets from a harper icly (the secret potions and such, which again I know little of even oocly. thats your quest ;) )

You don't find Harpers, Glyph, they find you.

To answer your question, you can RP yourself as a Harper with or without the Harper Scout class...doesn't mean it's actually true.

I just wanted to add to this thread, that HarperScout/PDK is the closest thing to a secret agent in FR, and is therefore worth RP awesome-points.

I thought it was not allowed. I always wanted to make a PC with the PDK PrC. Now that I know, I might make one. Though not any time soon, since I am not a regular player anymore.

Forum lurker FTW? >_<

Get the DM teams "all good" first Dahyla. Just incase Immolations off his rocker. As I believe Tormak didn't say you could play both together, just that you can play a Harper from Cormyr or a PDK from Corymr. So wither you can play both together is still up in the air.

Oh, I had no intention to play both PrCs. I would go only for PDK and would not claim to be from Cormyr's Army.

Either way, if/when I play as one, I will make sure to make some sort of formal request. ;]

The first rule of Harper Club is you do not talk about Harper Club?

Oh wait...

A Harper Agent infiltrating the PDK seems like an excellent RP background to me, at least. HS try to keep tabs on everyone, even the supposed "good" guys.

S.N. Yes, I am off my rocker, but so was my grandma after I kicked her off of hers.

As Tormak said, it's OK to be a Harper in your background. I think it's lame and cheesy, though: it's difficult to get induction and technically requires notice from an important NPC. Furthermore, a Harper is nothing without his organization. So saying you're a Harper but actually having no connection to the local Harper sect is kind of pointless. It becomes a gimmick, not a story device. But then again, it's pretty difficult to get into IC contact with whatever Harper PCs there maybe be on Amia. So there's really no good way to go about it.

I believe that people tell them that they are so secretive that we never see them, but in reality there is no harpers in amia.

One of my characters thinks that they can name at least five.

According to Bill Hurst, Harpers are nothing but a story device. If you need a clandestine, cloak and dagger organization that is trying to kill your political leaders and substitute them with "their own" dark horse candidates for rule, then you write a story about Harpers!

Can't find Harper Scouts in game? Get a group of friends, create characters with HS levels, then make your own Harper society.
