Post subject:  On Reptillian Nature and its Significance to Amia

Unlike mammals, which actively regulate their body temperature through metabolic activity, reptiles are ecotherms--Their body temperature depends on their surroundings. The drop in body temperature immobilizes a lizard, for example, because its movement depends on chemical reactions that occur within their muscles, and the rates of these reactions are highly sensitive to temperature. When reptiles get cold, they become lethargic, unable to move very quickly. For this reason, reptiles try to maintain their body temperature within a narrow range by moving between the Sun and the shade..

Now, to tie that scientific mouthful into Amia, I have recently wondered why such a nature of reptiles doesn't affect Dragons, Half-Dragons, or Kobolds. Is the answer simply 'magic'?

Post subject:  Re: On Reptillian Nature and its Significance to Amia

Dragons are not actually reptiles; they're warm-blooded. They're not reptiles, not mammals, not anything other than "dragon." The same goes for half-dragons. Kobolds, on the other hand, are cold-blooded; they even have certain behavior/mentality changes spoken of in some of the books that are triggered by particularly cold climates. I think the most noteworthy change is that a kobold in a climate too cold for a normal reptile is the need to eat three times its normal food requirement. Of course, that doesn't show up in a video game like Neverwinter Nights, but there you go.

In other words, reptilian physiology is not significant in Amia at all; all the reptilian races live in suitable environments, and those that venture into colder climes (like player kobolds) are not there for any extended length of time, or at least not long enough to go into "oh god I'm freezing to death"-mode.

Dragonkin may share the proposed warm-blooded nature of certain dinosauria. It is clear that they partake of at least some mammalian characterists (ie. the females have boobs).

Obviously magic makes it possible to have aspects of both natures.

Breasts are not a mammalian trait in D&D. They're a female trait, full-stop. Dragons are warm-blooded for sure, though, and kobolds are not. I think lizardfolk, troglodytes, asabi, and the other serpent races are still cold-blooded as well (but don't quote me on that one).

Draconomicon is a ~very~ good reading! I had it for a long time, but only fully read during the Wyrmling Plague plot in Ultrinnan. I did not regret the time I spent reading the book, though... since my memory is selective, most of the knowledge I used back then I am not using anymore and it kinda... disappeared from my mind =(

I could not get Races of the Dragon, though, but I do not doubt it will be just as good a reading.

From a RP standpoint, a number of us Kobo players will make snipes about the cold. Furthermore a few will rp donning thicker cloths to keep their temperature warmer. It's all a matter of preference though as, save for the Snow Beast lair, none of the dungeons would expose an adventurous kobold to cold harsh enough to stop their blood flow.

Maybe then I would. I tend to do a little research before making a character where I have gaps in the lore that would make up their background/race/ect. But I don't think I would really make any of those on Amia right now.

In fact in the Draconomicon there is a section of it completely detailing draconic anatomy. Well, I'd say nearly all of it. As there's going to be no need for detailed description of copulation/reproductive systems on Amia I'm pretty sure that 'nearly all of it' it covers everything you might need.

There are books devoted around the topic or at least containing the topic of many of the questions posed in threads in the forum. I wasn't looking for the sort of answer you would get from a reference librarian and I don't think many other people who make these topics are either. While I'm sure the books are an excellent source, I don't really have the time or resources to go seek it out.

Still, I was being petty. I could have simply said nothing, and instead I decided to bother you. So I apologize for the 'fobbing' and the 'miffed' feelings.

Warm clothes (without parenthesis because warm is a legitimate descriptor of a set of certain articles of one's apparel) are warm for multiple reasons. The main function of warm clothes is insulation - that is, maintaining a certain temperature regardless of the temperature outside. That is why warm clothes matter. The reason you begin to sweat and can overheat rapidly when wearing warm clothes in warm weather is because you have the forces of thermal radiation from within working to up the temperature within the insulated environment as well as thermal radiation from without working upon your exposed skin. Cold-blooded creatures, on the other hand, only have to worry about thermal radiation from without and insulation. The fact that mammals have the distinct adaptational advantage of producing heat through the thermodynamics of metabolism and homeostasis is arbitrary - it helps, but isn't the basis for the existence of wearing thicker garb that covers more surface area during the winter months or in cold climates.

tl;dr - Kobolds wearing warm clothes makes perfect scientific and realistic sense from a biological standpoint.

Post subject:  Re: On Reptillian Nature and its Significance to Amia

Because they are Draconic, not Reptillian. They aren't the same.
Kobolds are a much lesser Draconic, but more draconic then reptillian.

Thus, their habitats and how tempature effects them is more based on the type of dragon they are, or the type of dragon blood they have. Example, White Dragons prefer colder environments, and hate the heat. Where as Bronze(?) dragons prefer the deserts.

An example of a reptillian race on Amia is the ones in Khem, or the ones in the Quagmires. The Quagmires are a swamp, warm but wet. Khem is Hot, but dry. Different variations of reptiles. Not Draconic.

Dragons have little to no real world comparison. They are the a custom species, and their information is all in the books.

So to reiterate. Dragons are not Lizards. They are Dragons.

Dragon born are also 3.5 if you note the Rite of Rebirth outlined in Races of the dragon. Also, half dragons can potentially have boobs. They would not serve much purpose, but it is indeed possible. It is a valid observation of certain kinds of dragonkin. However, what should be noted is that these are traits gained from melding with a mammal, not traits inherent to the Draconic subtype.

Being a scaly doesn't give you a degree in genetics for DnD, (un?)fortunately. The correct answer is that they mix however they please. Half dragon females have breasts, as do Dragonborn. If the species lays eggs, they may r may not be functional since there are egg laying mammals with functional breasts. f the species is live birth, then they most definitely do. Kobolds do not, since they are literally Race: Reptilian, and not Dragon. Dragon Disciples do since they are primarily human/whatever to begin with. DnD doesn't account for "3/4ths" or "7/8ths" Dragon. These things don't really happen, they always typically get rounded down to the half. Same reason you don't see "3/4ths celestial" or etc.

Dragons are warm blooded and lay eggs.
Half dragons are warm blooded and ????. I would honestly err towards live birth.
Kobolds are cold blooded and ... uh, I haven't checked races of the dragon recently, sorry.
