I had a bit of an odd experience last night. I've been away from Amia for a few months, and came back with a new idea for a character. I worked him up, logged in, and almost immediately someone starting asking me about the name I chose (Lymm Skragga). He implied that I was some sort of dirt-bag for using it (my words, not his) and told me to expect people to hate me for using that name. When I asked why, he asked if I 'played Lala', I said no, and he told me to log in and I'd find out. All he would tell me (before ending the conversation a bit rudely...) is that the name I chose sounds like a parody of someone hated on 'Lala', whatever that is.
Now, I made a character WAY back (25+ years ago) when I played PnP D&D named Lymm S'Kragga. He was a warrior/assassin fellow, and I enjoyed playing him. I went on to make a shadowknight in EverQuest, a Teras Kasi in SW:G, a Warrior in Guild Wars, etc...all named Lymm Skragga. I'm not looking for retribution or an apology from the player I 'spoke' to last night (I'm 40 yrs old, I don't get angry about games), but I do want to know if the name Lymm Skragga is going to illicit this kind of response on the server. I have enjoyed my experiences thus far on Amia and I'd hate for a character name to ruin that for anyone. If anything...this fellow on 'Lala' ripped MY name off.
um, just ignore them. symm lkragga ? anagram? maybe they are just paranoid.
I had someone tell me starwind was a guy from the spanish inquisition, just don't call your character hebus el saviour and its all good. to be frank I ignore most tells now unless I know the people, its usually someone either asking something oocly, or someone accusing you of some innane bs. stay icly and if it carrys on inform a dm.
people have asked me if I was a dm on another server before, more than once, I would bet they think your someone else...and if you made the name and character in pnp years ago then well you've got no issues, so long as its not some obscure real life person, you might want to check incase it is, but don't panic.

OK! So.
1. Please don't mention things like this on the forum. We'd rather you just mention it to a DM so no one feels called out publicly.
2. Players need to realize that if they have a name issue with another player, ain't poop gonna get done about it unless they tell us. Sometimes it's very glaring like "Captain James T Kirk." Other times, it's so subtle, googling it is impossible and yet still other times we go "Srsly? O.o" and go about our day.
This would probably be one of those latter times.

I doubt anyone else will have even heard of the name. I know I have no clue what this Lala thing even is.
I've heard of it before, since I used to play SWG aswell and I'm pretty sure I used to sell someone named that crafter stuff. But yeah, don't see why the guy was making a big deal over the name.
So this one time I was making a character intended to be a guard, so I used an inverted version of the name John Dickson (well known author of detective novels) as a starting point. My advice, don't do that.
I steal names constantly. I don't have a problem with it as long as the characters aren't being stolen along with. And its not so obvious as to spoil the fun of everyone they meet like the Obi Wan Kenobi I played with on another server some years back. Johari entered Amia from an interdimensional portal from the distant realm of Quest for Glory 3. And Barnaby spent part of the early 90s in the Arkham Asylum. I did get a tell once upon a time remarking his middle and surname - T. Fugate - was a bit like Tempus Fugit...but they didn't realise he was in fact, the Clock King, coolest of all the Batman TAS villains! Muaha.
I've never got the Leggomi Egolas reference though. I remember reading another thread moaning about silly names and that got brought up then, too. Is it just a bastadized Legolas thing or am I missing something.
Leggomi Egolas alwasy reminds me of "Let go of my eggo", and then I'm suddenly wanting breakfast. I know its just me. *munches on a raw Leggomi*
But, yeah...names are important. Just like in real life, pc's with dumb names may not be taken seriously. It's truly an in game reaction, and sometimes great suspicion will occur on those with names that just don't seem believable.

Another to add to the list of DC universe / Bendir Dale relationship.
Until you mentioned it I hadn't realised Barnaby's link. Now it's perfectly clear!
On the matter of names, aside from Johanna, Aeswing and Zoey, almost all of my characters were named by the built in NWN name generator. The names of my characters and the names of others have been pretty meaningless to me. Shakespeare ruined names for me in my youth.

Honeywell = Honeypot variant. It keeps the feel of "honeypot" without the secondary slang meaning (vagina).
Arkady = Russian/Easter European relative of Arcadio or Arcadia which is a location in the celestial planes named after a Greek locale. The Russian variation is important because of Russian-Arab relations (given that Arkady is Mulhorandi).
Leeri, Norgrom, Broken-Claw, Viezra, etc. don't have names that reference anything specific (that isn't obvious).
Except Curse. Curse the Suicidal is a name and title as well as an actual curse. Curse the Suicidal curses the suicidal. Anguiwael is "anguish" + "wail."
I thought...and no offence >_> but I thought leggomi eggolas was...you know, legolas from lord of the ring's O_o as a sort of anagram....^_^
I nearly called one of my characters skywalker, on the thought of an airy surname, without much forethought...and i'm not refering to glyph lol...I always seam to do the "something" "adjective" route with surnames, ala first ed suggestions. (silverwind, and ghostblade, and some jazz...fantasy sounding names ^_^)
regarding the original meaning of this topic, well, google throws two links total, and there are no obvious meanings other than a name, so...yea, ignore the trolls. =)
Names are fun. I encourage people to have as much fun with them as I do - most every name I use for anything is an allusion, a reference, a play on words, a bastardization, or has some kind of subtext, even if that is merely the conjuration of a mental image.
Torin doesn't mean anything specific to me. Apparently it is a name with strong Celtic ties, though, which really doesn't have anything to do with Torin unless it's something I'vr done accidentally, and certainly doesn't fit the "Arabian Nights" feel of Calimshan, unless it were to be pronounce "toh-reen", with that light lilting sound of the R, much like "yohs-arh-deen", with the veyr ligh ttouch to the roof of the mouth.
He doesn't say it like that, of course, and he also pronounces it as "Yos/yah/yaws-uh-rin", despite having heard it repeated in "Mother tongue" endlessly.
I'm not clever enough to work in the sort of good sounding pun names and referential names like Yossarin is, such as Captain Albert Ross, or famed historian Thew C. Dides, or world renouned journalest Bill Hurst of the Commonwealth Recorder. Or even Johanthan Livingston.... hehe.

My Johanna is pronounced Yohanna. But in game folk have shortenned it to Jo, Jojo and variants since day one so it's kinda grown on me because I never correct anyone.
I did always at the beginning suggest 'Hanna as a shortened variant, but it never took off.
I would never imagine anyone calling her Yoyo

Not having heardf the Finnish language spoken , I always imagine Tuomas' pronounciation as Two-oh-mas.
And yarr.. I have to admit, part of the fun with Yossarin's NPC names (at least for me) is trying to decipher where in Gnome's name they are inspired from.

It's interesting to see how different people pronounce different names, especially depending on region. For example, I'd pronounce Johanna as Yo-hun-na, and Yossarin as Y-sah-rn.

I've always loved the way some Arabic names rolled off the tongue. They're just Magical. I don't know why.

Figured I'd give my pronounciations for some of my other chars past and present: *Not sure how they'd actually typed phonetically, but that's the sounds or closest things*

A big problem with typing words out like that is that some of us have rhotic and others non-rhotic accents, not to mention the piles of differences in vowels etc. Also: Gee-ha-roo Is that a hard 'G' (Geese) or a soft 'J' (Jump)?

I tend to have simple names, except for my fey familiars actual sylvan names >_>
el'xzi = (EL - ZEE)
or the full version which is...Evali'xavazathaísta (EH Vah lee -gap- SA VE Za feY, sta)
=D glyph, null, and hazy, are fairly self explanitory.
I just realised that says 'save the fey' >_> how very odd indeed. (accent the Y on feY for a closer um, approximation of what it sounds like. its a little tricky to pernounce irl.)
