FoA, I tried searching for topics similar to this, and I failed. However, in case I just missed that one special topic that was/is dedicated to this idea: "I pity the foo'."

So, here goes:

For a long time now, I've been thinking about the limits of NWN's "voiceset" system and its effects on roleplaying. While there are lots of pretty well acted sets, especially if you use that nice override that unlocks the ones designed for NPCs, it still forces your unique character to share his/her voice with other unique characters, effectively rendering him/her less unique!

Fortunately, Bioware has made it possible for us to create and use completely new voicesets by utilizing HAKs.. and since Amia uses Hasty Action Karma these days, unlike our holy n' hardcore counterpart Arelith, this can be done! It just needs someone who is as dedicated to the cause as BlackDahlya is to the custom portrait pack to regulate it.

I personally think it would be awesome to have custom voices for characters; it would add to the roleplaying experience and make Amia less like all the other servers in NWN and more like an individual game.

No thanks; the server doesn't need to be forced to redownload the entire hak every time some amatuer 'voice actor' thinks that their voice is the perfect fit for their character.

Well, I don't necessarily mean the hak has to be updated _every_ time someone submits a file. For example, it could update once every 6 months or every 12 months. However, you do have a point; if there was a way to make it an override instead of a hak file it would be far less cumbersome. However, I do not know of a way to do that, so we just have to roll with what we have.

Also, Tormy, somehow your posts always manage to catch the true meaning of the word "offensive", even if you aren't insulting anyone in particular. I'm probably going to regret saying this, but it would be nice if you'd think twice before bashing someone's idea. You can express your opinion in a nice way, too, no matter how negative it is.

There was no hostility in Tormak's post, and had anyone else have posted it, it probably wouldn't've gotten that response.

Back on topic; Not likely. Voicesets are just added megabytes to the HAK that's already getting quite large, and exists only to give fancy voices to a never-changing line of voice chat instead of actually making context-appropriate statements in your RP.

That's before considering the actual annoyance of Admins having to change people's voicesets every time new ones come in. It's tiresome as is with portraits.

If you want your unique character to have a unique voice, have no voiceset. Having no voiceset isn't unique, I know, but at least that way they won't share greetings and battlecrys with every over nth character and you're free to do it your own way.

I seriously doubt there are any quality voicesets available, and if there are, I dont think theyre worth adding to the hak for something thats likely to be a sizable d/l, and used only by a tiny niche of players.

And hells, I play with the sound turned down a lot anyway. :D

Where the devil is that override?! Can anyone post a link??

There's a reason why all the voices and stuff are packed away in the NWN data files. They're all WAV files, which makes them pretty much huge when they're either sitting in the override folder or inside a HAK file. Your hard disk will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

I don't doubt that your idea is presented with good intentions. I even thought to myself today, who can I replace that annoying Deekin voiceset with? However, when voices start to lag your NWN client then you will have to pull them, regardless of how well they might improve the distinction between characters.

Myself, I tend to use the voicesets very sparingly. It's a lot quicker for me to tap VSD than it is to type Indeed. But most of the time I like to personalise my greetings and conversations.

Most players do not play with sound on anyway. At least from what I've been told.

I was told that this is not possible.

It's easily possible. I do it for shifters all the time.

would be better if there was a mic input =D

I would bust a gut everytime I heard that if it was implimented, "i'll bust ya good" is sufficient, "I pity the fool!" would just...wow *rofl*

Is there some way of choosing nothing at creation? Or does it always require intervention. I've never seen an override offering the choice.

Requires intervention, afaik.

Post subject:  Re: A WILD IDEA: new voicesets

It doesn't. Just find a voiceset.2da that has a blank entry that you can pick. Stuff it into your override folder. Done.

Post subject:  Re: A WILD IDEA: new voicesets

Yeah, the PC character generator stores the prefix needed to use a particular voiceset in the character file - all the 2DA file does is point at those voicesets. So if you have a blank entry that can be selected, no voice will be played for that character.

All you need is the High-strung Evangelist voiceset!

Speaking of voicesets: Is there no official Amia hak voiceset?, or do all just download what they can get there hands on and use?

Considering that unless the other person you play with has the soundset Dled and installed as well, or they won't see it. No.

Hence the "no official Amia voiceset" question. It seems a little low just to have the standard 20 male and female voices to pick between.

Post subject:  Re: A WILD IDEA: new voicesets

You can pick from any voiceset at character creation, with an override. The downside of course, is that the other voicesets may not be suitable for your character, nor will they necessarily be full voicesets. You can be assured of maybe a Hello and Goodbye voiceover as well as some of the combat voicing, but not much else.

You can modify the soundset.2da file and create the override yourself. The most up-to-date 2DA files are contained within 2dasource.zip, in the NWN folder. Extract soundset.2da, open it in Notepad or whatever. Check the last column of the rows containing voices you want to use, with a 0. Then save it to your override folder.

When you're finished creating your character, move the overriding soundset.2da out of the override folder so it doesn't cause any unintended side-effects.
