Probably not as Kara-tur is all about oriental stereotypes. |

Yep, East Asia. Anyway, something else comes to mind: would it be weird to meet someone from Kara-tur on Amia or in the lands surrounding the island? Or from Matzica, or anywhere else not in Faerün for that matter? |

Nope. There's several characters I've seen with Kara-Turan origins, as well as a few Chultans, and at least two characters I know of have some link to Maztica. So it's not at all against the rules or bad RP. |

But what we really need is that 2nd ed "land of the stale cheese" 1001 nights stories style Faerun Arabia. Thats where all the awesome is at. |

I didn't mean that to be a question of RP quality, but rather of frequency, from a campaign perspective. Because I'm straying from Kara-Tur alone here I'll move to the Lore Questions thread. |

The entire region was based loosely on real world locations and cultures in asia and southeast asia. As a result, there is a correlation between RL cultures and languages. As you noted Kozakura is modeled after fuedal Japan and has a similar language. Shou Lung has a language and culture similar to China, specifically the Han dynasty which means the Mandarin language. Tabot is D&D's Tibet, Ra-Khati is Nepal, and Koryo is the amaglam of Korea. The Island Kingdoms are a conglomeraton of Indonesia, Malasia, and the Philipines. And the Horse Plains are modeled after Mongolia which is where Tuigans are from in the Forgoten Realms. For the most part, the cultures represented were taken wholesale from the real world examples with minor tweaks suited to incorporation into a fantasy setting. With this in mind, using the real world to aid in languages, customs, and looks of any character in one of these regions should work fine. |

I would imagine the FR analogs to RL languages would be recognizable in flavour only. Speaking Mandarin would look like speaking Shou to the Westerner, but one fluent in Chinese probably would not be fluent in Shou. That is just a guess, mind you. |

it will however be very hard for a kara-tur char to know common...seeing as nearly noone on the faerun side knows karatur and can teach them common |

makes me recall what disco said about finnish XD I think you'd need a master linguist on the island to be translating anything nevermind teaching kara-tur common. its not unlikely they could learn drac if they are magic users. |

Speaking any RL language in FR is equivalent to speaking Common. The DM team ruled on this some time back. Any RL spoken language may be translated to English (or etc) and treated as Common. |

I'd imagine Kara-turan is an accepted equivalent of Faerun Common. But then there are regional languages. Kozakuran, for instance, is a Japanese influenced one, if I recall. As for Italian, I'm certain that there's an Italian based region in Faerun. Faerun is a bit like Europe, North parts of Africa and parts of the Middle East all squished together. |

I dont know any region of Faerun which lives on hair-gel and poor common, so no, there is no region for Italy. |

Kao Te Shou (AKA Kara-Turan) is the common of Kara-Tur. Kozakuran and Wa appear to be modeled after Japan; Shou Lung, Northern Wastes and T'u Lung appear to be modeled after China; Koryo appears to be modeled after Korea; Tabot appears to be modeled after Tibet; Island Kingdoms appear to be modeled after India/Indonesia/Malaysia and so on. There are a lot of languages, but Kao Te Shou is the most spoken one. The root language to all of them is Han, which is still spoken widely in the lands of Wa. My Kara-Turan raised PC speaks both Han and Kao Te Shou, being from Wa. I use Japanese words sometimes to symbolize Han words. Kinda like how some people use Elven and Drow to say hi, bye, and other little things. I don't write sentences or anything in it... Not that I could, since I don't speak Japanese. >.> |

Kara-tur = Japanese, Korean, Indian/Indonesian and Chinese culture. Pretty much its a mix of the four major asian cultures. |

Chondath is loosely inspired by Italy. But like most countries in Faerun, it's only loosely inspired by it, and then only by parts of its structure and has parts of other cultures' structure and flavor to make it interesting and different from RL. Unlike Kara-Tur. |
