(I tried to bring this question up in the requests thread, sorry to Draco for doing that in his topic, but it felt relevant. But its probably better off here.)

There's been a few questions raised lately about Nobility. I would also like to mention an unfortunate circumstance of my own regarding this topic.

Me and my brother have been players on Amia since just after the split from Arelith. Yep we're veterans ;) Greta Solveig and my bros character Puregold Gudmansdottir are two of our oldest characters. Greta and Puregold are even characters from me and my brother's old D&D roleplaying days, we have great affection for them and their backstory and adventures go way back even before Amia.

The issue I'm afraid of, is that from the very beginning, Puregold was always a dwarf of notoriety from where she came from in Icewind Dale. She is the first Scion of her wealthy family's Trading Company. She often refers to herself as "Madam Puregold".

I would say it was over 4 or 5 years ago when I read about the issues with creating noble characters, and that any request for a title in the name should be made before creation.

After all these years we have neglected to even bother requesting to have a title for Puregolds name, because of the rules we had read and learnt long after making the character. (We have respected the rules and never had any hope that such a request would be granted.) But in Dracos request thread it was stated by Tormak that we shouldn't claim nobility without a request, I sure hope that this won't be a problem with Puregold. She's been on the server for many many years now.

Is Puregold safe for being a Noble, even if she doesn't have her title in the name?

I'd say this may fall under grandfathered, although I'm not sure. I don't think it's a huge deal since you don't have titles. It would probably be easier to figure out if we had some sort of written something somewhere that said you roleplayed puregold as such, but I dunno if you do. I'd not kick up a huge fuss over it, but that's just me. If someone were to have joined the server later, say when I did in 2007, Then yeah I'd question it.

Unless Icewind Dale is an oligarchy and the merchant clans are 'nobles' de jure and not simply de facto I don't see that it would be a problem under a strict interpretation of the current rule. The point, of course, is to not be able to claim any special privileges from one's pre-Amia background. On Amia, at least, merchants are not nobles and so wouldn't get special treatment.

I just checked the old Characters Background Info thread, Greta is up there, but alas, my brother never included Puregold on there, so i guess there is no proof he's been roleplaying Puregold as a noble for all that time.

But anyway thanks for the assurance Lalelilolu, I guess my bro can continue to rp Puregold as a noble, but certainly never bet on it being made official on his chars name? Its a shame he didn't know at the time when he made it.

Thanks for the concern Xavi, yeh I don't think my bro is worried at all, he doesn't care about special treatment, he just wants to be sure he's not breaking any Amia rules by rp'ing a noble that doesn't have a title in the playable character's actual name. I would also agree with your assessment about the merchant clans being 'nobles' de jure, its a reputation she's earned, the family is famous and rich, and to local dwarven eyes that made her noble. Thats exactly what my bro was thinking when he made her.

What does the server gain by stretching this allowment of the grandfather clause and letting your brother (who sohuld be posting and defending himself.) continue to play this as a 'noble'?

Well, as Puregold is an RDD, she will never gain advantage of her family name within the Dwarven halls.

Thats true Opustus, and history has proved that.

Heh, time and again i've asked my bro to make an account here in the forums. In four years he still hasn't.

And if he is told that the possibility of his request being accepted hinged on him making a forum account and not speaking through a mediated 3rd party?

I'll tell him exactly that, see if it motivates him lol! For too long I've had to use my account to PM his characters dealings to other players.
