OK, now that we got a shiney new forum with superb functions, I am going to add proper moderator groups to faction forums to make maintaining rosters and what have you a ton easier.

For this, I need names of people who should be moderators in which forums. This probably means current faction leaders, but can also mean other people. The open-to-all city forums will also get mods.

Anyway, the hidden factions can send me a PM if they don't want names in public, but for the public forums it's easier if you just post here to make my job a bit easier! :D

The faction/city moderators can lock and merge topics, clean up posts and remove unneeded crap to keep their assigned forum neat and nice. It doesn't mean unnecessary censorship or editing of people they don't fancy or anything else nasty, of course.

A quick question! Is it at all possible to add the ability to Sticky/Unsticky to the forum moderators' options? Not sure how it works, myself, so I'm just wondering if we're still gonna have to badger DMs for such things. :D

Edit: Well, the Mystran forums won't be bugging DMs for it, since I discovered the long way to Sticky, but for future reference and such, in case a simple "Sticky Topic" button can be added. If not, ah well. Just wondering!

Yes, this I forgot for some groups. But you'll get to sticky things.

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Folks who posted so far, have a look if it seems about correct. Now you should be able to sticky/announce, merge, lock, edit, delete, approve (we don't actually use this right now, but it's for possible future use), move (this one you also probably don't need right now, but you never know what happens tomorrow) and split topics. Slicing, cubing, julienning and liquidising we'll add later.

If the panel feels weird or you don't know how something works, ask away.

You can also add more moderators, if you think they are needed. Removing works, too.

Northen Alliance: Lutra

They were previously the moderator for removing/adding.

If it's alright, I'd like to be added for moderator as representative of Salandra's. I used to do that when it was the Sally and Kelly forums. Aka: Torzeng

Will be making topic in faction to be sure nobody would have reason to be against it. But it would save me from needing to bother Lutra when Salandra's populace changes around.

two questions.

1. Can faction boards have more than one leader? If not, that's fine.

2. Can moderators grant access? If not, that's fine. If so, is there a moderator tutorial? If not, that's fine.

Thank you!

(I'll use admin and mod for sake of simplification.)

Good questions, the HoA forums has an Admin already and he can add and remove forum access, but, he's not around as much lately and I'm respectful of that since he's in school. All I'm wanting is to be able to add and remove new members. As of late with all the new memberships most of this has been passed off to Khylaria and she does it no problem, I just don't like having to ask her since I know she's got more things to deal with than just forum access. Soo yeah what she said. lol

sweet and sweet! Well I'd like to be set up as either of those in that case. :) I'm already a Mod of HoA so the ability to grant access is all I'm needing. I'm not sure what all admin entails but I'll give it a try too. If you want just send me a pm with any steps needed, I'm sure I could figure it out but any help I'll take lol.

Yes please on the tutorial for granting forum access or others. I've been playing around with thread merging because frankly, there don't need to be 20 threads covering the same bloody thing.

But every time I tried to grant forum access, it just added people to the moderator board and that wasn't the desired outcome. So a step by step for those who aren't sure how to steer the car would be glorious please when it's able to be done.

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Um, I think I just found a bug in the User Control Panel that allows me to see faction membership numbers and the players in that faction. I may even be able to delete peoples memberships to these groups.

I can view every single faction that is visable's memberships...

I just found this out now, as I haven't touched the UCP in a few months.

Edit: On review it looks like it may just be for certain factions, though I can't see why I can see the memberships of these factions and not others. In truth I shouldn't be able to see any but the War Knights.
This is a major security bug.

Author:  Selvec Darkon [ Sat, Nov 13 2010, 4:11 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

That seems like a massive issue, since it means people can meta when someones online, jump on their character, and start following them around. It also means people can meta the faction numbers for those groups. Furthermore you can find out if someone in your group is playing someone in another group, allowing you to pick out potential spies.

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Being able to view who's in what groups is intended for public factions, hence the "public" faction thingy.

I guess you're a moderator Selvec, you add and remove people to one group?

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

I do, but only for the Order of the Flaming Blade (mods) and Order of the Flaming Blade. I haven't tried it on the other faction area's because I don't want to screw with their stuff.

Most of the groups who's memberships I can see are not public, but closed. A few of them are open.

Author:  Nekhy [ Sat, Nov 13 2010, 9:21 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Yeah, open and closed public are visible. Open means people can apply for membership and are either approved or not by the group mod. Closed means they're listed but nobody can apply for membership, only group mods add them. Hidden is the option where they're neither listed nor can people apply for membership. Hidden groups are the only ones you don't see without global moderator/admin permissions.

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Is there any way to have an option that lists you on the main page, but doesn't allow people to see your memberships or numbers?
I really don't want people to be able to see that, espically in terms of faction conflict. It's a pretty hefty tactical advantage to not show your full hand.

Author:  Nekhy [ Sat, Nov 13 2010, 9:29 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Yes, it's possible to make the usergroup hidden but keep the forum visible (not readable). Unless I'm mistaken group mods can actually set this themselves for their own group, the visibility of their usergroup.

Um, just checked, no option.

Just the the types option.

Open, Request, Closed and Hidden.

The first three I can see peoples memberships, and the last would hide you from everyone I believe. Though clearly your right, because I can't access the Church of Bane, but I can see them on the faction forum list.

This is for the usergroup options, right? That's what I meant, you can choose the settings for the group but not the forum. Those are defined with separate settings, forum settings are only done by forum admins.

Though I forgot there's four options, not three. Nobody has requested the fully open option in ages, everyone goes for either "request" or "hidden" nowadays so it's a nonoption as far as my manual labour mind is concerned...

So if we don't want people to be able to see who is in our faction, we should set it to hidden?

Author:  Nekhy [ Sat, Nov 13 2010, 9:51 AM ]
Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Correct. You can set it as you prefer. I guess for most it's set as originally requested, I wasn't actually aware group mods can set it as they please until one group mod told me recently that they can!

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

All right, we tested the weird remove/demote options with Selvec and it looks like they're ghost options that have no functionality beyond the groups you should be able to moderate. For some reason they hang there, as if they were real options with functionality for all groups. But they don't. Don't ask me why they're there, though, that's a visual bug. Maybe Disco can do something about it, or maybe it's just how the forum is built and it'll remain there, confusing people because it's how it's meant to be.

Weird devs.

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

Tested, no options to make the player-list invisible...looked everywhere through the Usergroups. Tried the Moderator Control Panel, every option in the User Control Panel, every option in the Manage Groups area.

Nothing.

If I click Hidden, it will remove the faction from sight on the boards however correct? I'd like to have the faction visible, but not the player list for my faction. Which seemingly sounds like what the closed option should be.

I'll just keep it hidden till this gets sorted.

Post subject:  Re: Faction forum updates (important!)

So you want the faction listed under the usergroups but don't want the member list to be visible under usergroups? That's not possible.

Open = anyone can join on their own, group and members listed publicly
Request = anyone can apply for membership, group and members listed publicly
Closed = membership only by invitation, group and members listed publicly
Hidden = membership only by invitation, group and members not listed publicly

And we're talking ONLY usergroups now, not how the forums are listed under the Faction Forums listing accessible from the index page. That cannot be set by group moderators. I can set Flaming Blade to appear on the forum listing if it's not there right now.

Alright, you see two groups (because phpBB3 isn't smart enough to allow this done with just one group without editing each user individually): one ends with (Mods) and the other just has the faction name. You want to edit the one without (Mods) when adding people access to read the forum.

Go to User Control Panel at the top right corner.

Select Usergroups from the left hand panel. You see a list of all public groups, both yours and others. Don't bother with the long list now, but look at the left hand panel again. Go to Manage Groups.

Next to Manage Users from the right panel. There's a list of groups you can edit (or, groups you are a group moderator of). Just add the name of the member in the field below. Default group option isn't needed, as it just overrides some other privileges and may result in funkiness for the user, depending on their groups.

Here's also the option to approve group members, for groups such as Glade that take requests for membership. Approve members by ticking the box next to their name and choosing the approve option from the pull-down menu on the left bottom side.

Does that make it any easier?
