OK, so when I try to start up NWN, I get a message saying: "I'm sorry, it doesn't look like I'm in the Neverwinter Nights install directory. Please put me back or re-install Neverwinter Nights." I can't reinstall, because the CD is gone. Helpsies! :(

I got this error message once when I tried to make a shortcut on my desktop by copying the "Nwn Main" link from the NWN Directory folder to my desktop. Needless to say, it didn't work.

If you've done that, or created a desktop shortcut some other way, there's your problem. Just copy it back into the directory, or try loading straight from the NWN Main link in the NWN folder.

(That's My Computer -> Local Disk -> NeverwinterNights -> NWN, for Windows users.)

Ok, so I can still play by going to the Nwmain application in the folder.. I'm not going to try and fix it, seems a bit complicated.

windows key + f button.

type in:

nwmain.exe

once it finds it right click:

send to desktop as shortcut.

As Dwagin says - make a shortcut to it, don't copy the exe file.
You can do this by right clicking the exe, click 'create shortcut', and moving the created shortcut to the desktop.

And make bloody sure you store your CD keys somewhere safe if you don't have the cd anymore.

CD keys can be found from a file in NWN directory. Keep a copu always safe. ISOs are easy to get, legit CD keys less so.

And if you were a sane person and remembered to register your games with Bioware, they can be retrieved from your account details on Bioware's website.

Looks like I'm insane. :) It runs in the family though; my uncle is bipolar schizophrenic.

The reason you're getting the problem, is most likely because the registry keys have become messed up somehow.
start-> run
regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BioWare\NWN\Neverwinter
then alter the path the "Location" key is pointing, to your NWN directory. I.E "C:\Games\NeverwinterNights"

The only time I ever got that message was when I'd renamed the override folder for file-switching and forgot to make one just "override" again. I just make one "override" and it works.

Ok, so I can now log in, but.. All the words are gone from my menu. And from the levelling screen.. and a lot of other stuff. This happened to Davis, he said all he did was use Disco's tlk folder, and I did that, but nothing. Help?

EDIT:: *Sigh..* Nevermind. Accidentally got rid of my dialog.tlk file. Gonna download one from the Bioware website. Can a DM lock this so I don't post any more stupid questions? :)
