Why are they one handed? It just occured to me that it makes no sense. They are bigger then some two handed weapons, as big as a quarterstaff at least, yet they are one handed. Shouldn't they be two handed?

Ah. I always wondered about that, still thats kinda weird. Espically since you get people using sheilds with a staff that kinda does looks two handed.
Edit: I wonder, can quarterstaffs be used by small characters?

No, they can't. It's mechanics, sadly.
Large = 1 handed for large, 2 handed for medium, impossible for small
Medium = 1 handed for large, 1 handed for medium, 2 handed for small
Small = impossible for large, 1 handed for medium, 1 handed for small
Mage Staff is a Middle size weapon. Quarterstaff is Large.

Also... I guess most mages wouldn't really actively -fight- with a mage staff. They mainly strengthen their amount of spellslots and maybe help to block some blows along with the shield.
An effective attack with a quaterstaff while holding a shield would be about impossible. The same would go for a staff but mages tend to have such crap AB that they wouldn't really attack with it anyways... ratehr "attack" by the means of blocking the other's attack to not get hit flatfooted.

I thought most grabbed a second weapon for spellslots as well? Staff in one hand and other weapon in the offhand for extra spells?

Heh, I was going to put in some 2-h weapons specificly for mages, till it was pointed out most people wouldn't use them, in favor of the staff/sword or staff/shield combos you usually see >>

Bring on the Bardic Greatsword, the Wizards Claymore and the Sorcerous Zweihander.
I happen to have two of the three above that use Greatswords, and a Sorceror that uses a Scythe.

My PnP Sorceress uses a keened dagger for melee (if ever she goes melee!) and a rifle for ranged.
Yes, the DM of my campaign inserted rifles and stuff in her campaign. >_>;;
But, concerning the Staves, before reading WonWon's post I always thought mages could carry them in one hand because they were crafted of lighter materials, not iron and such like regular weapons.

One can carry a quarterstaff in one hand to, but the fact is you can be seen using it in combat with one hand, which should never happen with a weapon that large.

If Gandalf can dual wield a sword and his staff, then so can I.

Gandalf wasn't allowed to use much in the way of magic though

Actually, I can make staves one handed and they will still work for smaller races. You just make them only useable in the offhand, thus removing the ability to use sheilds with them. You also cannot duel weild mage staffs, so ha ha.

I wish small creatures could use a quarterstaff, they look much nicer than the overly glowy mage staves.

That can't be done unfortunatly, least not easily. It would require changing the weapons size, and that would make the weapon one handed for larger races. While I could prevent duel wielding it, I couldn't prevent using a sheild, which while unlikely to happen, would be silly and somewhat daft thing to do. I don't think I'd be allowed to make it one handed either.

I agree here. I think all the mage staves look ugly with their stupid big glowy things at the end. (Apart from one that the Diplomat Trainer NPC holds. That looks nice)
I too wish that smallfolk could wield quarterstaffs. NWN is the only D&D game I've played where quarterstaffs are not equippable by every PC.

It's because 3.0 had, for the most part, standard weapons. Meaning a longsword was medium sized, did 1d8 damage.
3.5 changed this, so you have Small longswords, Medium longswords, Large longswords, etc, depending on your size, rae, weapon type. A Small Longsword does 1d6 damage. It's a shortsword. Basically. But it's a "longsword for small races". Same deal with the Quarterstaff. You'd use a Medium Quarterstaff as a halfling, whereas a human 2hands a Large quarterstaff.
It's needlessly complex, really...

I wouldn't say it sounds complex. More intuitive. Though complex in terms of programming NWN based on their current model.
DDO: Ebberon Unlimited sorted that out nicer, starting from scratch.

Needlessly complex? I hardly think so ... it's a lot easier to think "of course these creatures are going to make weapons their own size".

Curious why a small creature can not use a staff and a dagger.
According to NWNWiki: "Magic staff are one-handed for small size creature."

They're two handed, obviously, if you can't, and the wiki is wrong.
