In the process of pondering various RP possibilities on Amia I've often found myself lacking certain information about the ingame rules and processes of resurrection and such.
-If a person is killed and a body part removed, then that person is resurrected does the body part turn to dust? If so can't any part of it be retained as say a trophy.
-Is respawn the same as resurrection?
-How do different degrees of damage to the corpse effect the process?
-Say I sacrifice a living player to a god. How would that effect the players ability to respawn or be resurrected by someone later. Especially if that god isn't quite found of the creature sacrificed to it. Say a kelly sacrificed to bane or something like that.
-I've also pondered the idea of re-incarnation. What's the mechanism for that? Can it just be decided by a player ingame or does it need DM aproval. Say he/she got sacriced or killed and resurrects as another person or race.
-And lastly a character idea I've been working on. Say someone has been frozen in ice for a hunderd years. Can he be resurrected normally or would it require some powerful ritual?

Yes, it all becomes dust, which is why I make a plaster cast of their face ASAP. hadeismetirion wrote: -Is respawn the same as resurrection? Judging from the last time it was brought up, respawn is OOC. hadeismetirion wrote: -How do different degrees of damage to the corpse effect the process? They don't - a Raise Dead will close wound but not replace body parts, Resurrection will restore it no matter what condition it's in. hadeismetirion wrote: -Say I sacrifice a living player to a god. Coming back to life is still the same, since the god in question doesn't get the soul. hadeismetirion wrote: -I've also pondered the idea of re-incarnation. What's the mechanism for that? Reincarnate is a spell in PnP, which randomly determines what race you'll be when you're brought back, and you're brought back as a juvenile with the majority of the memories of your previous life. Probably the easiest non-evil way to immortality. hadeismetirion wrote: -And lastly a character idea I've been working on. Say someone has been frozen in ice for a hunderd years. Normal Resurrection will restore any cellular damage incurred. Hells, if you're still whole, Raise Dead should work, so long as it wasn't old age that killed you.
If you'd like more detail on any of these points, let me know and I'll be happy to provide.

Turell is right, with the caveat that we will probably never allow you to use Reincarnation, ever.

I will still pray for the day when I'm allowed to botpage a druid spell to do reincarnation. IE: Raisedead and then give the victim a locked polymorph for x duration!

Minor detail:
Raise Dead is limited to 1 day per Caster Level.
Ressurection is limited to 10 years per Caster Level.

Right still got two more follow up questions.
About the resurrection after being frozen for a hunderd years. I'm mainly asking it for a friend of mine who'll soon be joining the Amia crew. So raise dead and resurrection spells won't work. Is their say any way of acomplishing it via ritual say with aid of a diety (dm). Or as an alternative, what if the creature is a water ganasi. I presume they'll take to freezing a lot better.
Secondly re-incarnation. I never ment the question in relation to a spell. Heck didn't even know their was one, though I'm not surprised. Well suppose I'll just time out the ingame situation I have in mind. I don't even see me playing it out, but it has more to do with the reasoning of a character of mine rather then a desire to do it.
Drow are filth in his eyes, if they worthship Loth or Eilistraee. It's all the same. If they really wanted to atone for their acient crimes they would willingly (a lose concept for him) Let themselves be sacrificed to say Shevarash and hope to be one day be re-incarnated as a proper Elf. Seeing as their souls are still basicly of the fair folk.
Not talking about an re-incarnation by a player but by the grace of a diety or fate. Which ingame would translate to a DM but like I said it's more a question of philosophy then ingame play.

There is no widespread belief in transmigration of the soul in Faerûn, as far as I'm aware. The church of Kelemvor preaches what happens after death, and it's no secret among other faiths, either: you go to an afterlife.
I suppose some cultures may believe in transmigration. The Adama faith on Durpar, Estagund and Var the Golden comes to mind, and there surely is something like that in the East, Kara-Tur.
But it's not altogether unbelievable: while transmigration is not part of official theology and doctrine, many people might very well believe in it, and in past lives. You can see a parallell in the real world: it has no part in the theology of the Abrahamic faiths, but a surprisingly great number of western Christians state that they do believe in transmigration on some level. It's common to believe in past lives, for example, even if it has no part in the doctrine of their religion (which they're genuinely followers of).
So yes, it may be plausible IC that common people have folklore and beliefs of transmigration. Educated theologers would try to deny such as superstition, and OOCly we know it doesn't happen.

As an aside. The gods get kinda upset when a character gets sac'd to them and then that same character is running around a few minutes later like nothing happened.

As I understand, it's the actual act of sacrifice that gets gods giddy, not anything they take from it.
That's why a lot of gods are offered magic items and food and otherwise non-living things as well. It's all an act of worship. It's just that some of the more violent gods appreciate creatures being killed in their name, a show of power and whatnot.
Think about how some people "give up" something for Lent. Chocolate, alcohol.... secks >_>;. It's the actual act of an offering that's the treat for the deity, not souls or nothin'.

I would say so, yes. A sacrifice is a very powerful act of worship, and taking someone's life is sure to get lots of "worship points" for the god. I reckon they get tangible power from every prayer spoken to them, every warding gesture and coin tossed on their altar somewhere on Toril. The more sincere, dramatic and solmen the act, the more it's worth. But I would suspect that a lot of the time, the symbolism of the act and the credibility of the god/faith is undermined by the sacrifice getting back to life later, which is why I suspect many clerics might want to avoid PC sacrifices.

I would argue against that. You still did the sacrifice, and PCs shouldn't be deterred from going after the "big Prizes", which will naturally be other PCs, not lame NPCs, and just because we can't force them to permadetah people shouldn't mean the Big Catch means less.

It also depends on the God would I say, I mean I can't imagine Salandra accepting any kind of human sacrifice.
Baal however much more likely, although he is about the slaughtering and so you could praise him in the battlefield as much as when butchering the neighbors next door.
Bane is more about the 'fear' part, its not the sacrifice but the prelude that gets the sacrificee (?) to wet their pants in fear.
Lolth, well, elven sacrifices will probably net her some good points. Double if it is male, triple if it is an Elistrean.
A sacrifice of a Drow might be good too, but then again, its Lolth we talk about.
Overall its DM ruling though.

Yeah, most of the good, and even neutral gods don't usually ask for live sacrifices and such... usually. I imagine some of the neutral ones can have sacrifices made to them, so long as they're a specific thing, like the ceremonial sacrifice of a traitor or wrongdoer to Hoar or such. Neutral and good animal gods don't usually accept animal sacrifices, as far as I can recall.
However, there are equivalent acts the good characters can perform on evil character, I suppose. Like in a Tyrran instead of just killing the villian on the spot, taking him back to his settlement and having him tried in a court for his crimes. That would seem like a great act of faith or worship. A good deity might perhaps accept a something like saying a prayer to the deity about justice or good before beheading, executing, or otherwise striking down an evil character.
But as far as going out, purposely searching for and abducting PC's, then sacrifising them bloodily... I don't see that going over well for most goodies.

It is the fact you are willing to kill someone in the name of your god that is good, even though thier soul does not go to the god you sacrificed them too.

I remember reading a post a ways back from the DM's saying that Lolth wasn't too keen on seeing sacrifices to her running around alive again. This could just be for that particular deity, but I'd assume that it would apply to any of the evil gods and goddesses that tend to like humanoid sacrifices.

They changed the whole "all saccs must be permadeaths" for drow a litle while ago.

That's why before I sacrifice a person, I tattoo funny or insulting pictures or phrases on the body before I kill them. They come back looking like an idiot which is at least some compensation.
Granted I've never done that here because my character isn't the sacrificy type, but its worked wonders elsewhere.

Which only works if the person being sacrified agrees with the tattoos, etc.

That sounds like my smartassery during Hawkes' all-call for players to create low-level throwaway PCs for whom they could script a capture-sacrifice. No sweat, no effort, no toil, most of all, no risk. Yes, it is OOC, but that would be like me creating a lvl 1 PC, having him throw himself off a cliff, and then giving myself a gold medal for having the balls to permakill one of my own PCs.

I think it came back from earlier than that, since the drow were told not to sacrifice unless it's perma years ago (before I even started playing).
But that's all water under the bridge now, it has been revoked.

It's been speculated by DMs, and probably shown in game, that Lolth isn't fond of sacrifices that get up the next day. I think players even had the practice of not sacrificing PCs unless they were going to die for good. It has never been a DM ruling, though.

Maias referring to an old ruling before his time does not mean such a ruling existed. It simply confirms the above: a player practice, a rumour, and DMs speculating or showing in game the silliness of temporary sacrifices. I can certainly say it has never been an Amia rule posted anywhere official, and I doubt you'll even find a DM statement on it.

I skimmed it, but I couldn't find it. It all seems very recent, and if such a ruling actually did exist, it must have been from 2007 or so. I did not see any DM state they'd made an official ruling like that. There seems to have been confusion and the belief that such a ruling existed, and whether true or false, the DMs clarified it with a definite ruling that would have made the old one obsolete, if there had been one. But there wasn't, as far as I can remember, and I was pretty closely involved in everything Drow 2005-2007.

It was a very brief rule. It is no longer.
