Hey guys, I'm a player here on Amia, and recently have moved and now am using a computer that uses windows vista rather than windows xp. Now, when I installed it and everything, I tried running the critical rebuild and that didn't work because it said it wasn't compatible...so I try playing the game anyway, and as I clicked "play", NWN shut down and said that it is not compatible with vista! Are there any solutions anyone can throw at me? Is NWN compatible at all with vista?

Redownload the patch and make sure you got the right version for your copy.
NWN doesn't run in vista unless it's been updated to 1.69.
Edit: Here's great Dwagin's post about NWN & Vista, follow them. I'll save you the trouble Dwagin.

All versions of Neverwinter Nights up to v1.68 are not compatible with Windows Vista and have been blocked from installation by the operating system. If you are having difficulty running Neverwinter Nights on Windows Vista ensure that the game has been updated to the latest version and that you are running the game as an administrator. Go to: http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch.htmlDownload 1.69 for your version of nwn. install, the patch. Once done, go to your nwn install directory: Find your nwn.ini file in your nwn1 install directory, under [Display Options] add the following text Disable Intro Movies=1 Then find nwmain.exe right click it, send to desktop->Create shortcut on desktop once it is on the desktop right click the shortcut and select properties once having done so go to the compatibility tab: Check the boxes for: Disable Themes Disable Desktop Composition Run As administrator Use this shortcut to launch the game. Once inside the game go to the sound options and select 'Miles Fast Sound' this is the only sound supported in nwn1 on vista due to how the audio stack was changed in Vista.

And if that all doesn't work, prey.
I've done everything said to get NWN to work on Vista and it still crashes like a druggy missing it's fix. Only time I managed to fix it was when I installed NWN on XP first, then just copy and pasted the NWN folder over to Vista. Worked like a beauty after that.

thats exactly what i did, and nwn has never once given me a problem playing it this way. I originally did it because i didnt want to have to download everything again, but i never got any of the problems everyone seems to associate with nwn on vista

Prey is tasty.
But no, I also suggest updating your DirectX because Windows Vista does not support a lot of old games out of the box.

I also suggest going to http://www.windowsupdate.com and downloading everything there.

Um, where can I find the install directory and the nwn.ini file?

I think that sort of explains why it's not working properly for me, then.
I installed NWN a first time on my PC, but it seemed it never installed properly, like as if it missed some files out or something. So a few weeks ago, when Amia was down I decided to take the time to uninstall and re-install in hopes it would install properly, if not I thought I would then know that it would be a problem with the disc.
But after you saying that, it sounds it must be that it doesn't install the game properly, if it's working good from just copying and pasting from XP.

run the setup file from the CD by exploring it. (Windows key + E for a shortcut), then go to your nwncd, right click the setup.exe and click run as admin..
should fix it
