...it means I've passed out drunk in front of the keyboard again. Just grab a DM and have me booted. I was on for over an hour last night, on what I assume was a very full server, so my apologies for anyone spamming Connect, and tsk tsk to those who didn't rat me out. You're meant to, and I don't mind.

The same applies to any extended AFKer. Just grab DM and get booted; it's okay.

*glares for a little while then cant help but laugh* Well at least he's honest about it, which is more than I can say for some I know of.

On a related issue is there no way for the server to detect if someone has been logged in but hasnt been active for a while?

What would qualify as "active"?

Spies often stay put for extended periods of time, not interacting with the game because there's really no reason to. No one will see their emotes (presumably), there's nothing to interact with, or "do" besides sit and watch/listen to people chatting which can go on for hours with no one moving or activating an item, opening their character sheet, or anything like that.

A grey area I have to admit, though even when my Bella stays put for what can be -very- long periods of time, I am still always doing something, even if it is only going through her inventory arranging things.

It requires insanely lagalicious heartbeat scripts. It's been suggested before, and that was the reason it wasn't added.

Also, as to what qualifies as active, on the last server I played on, which *did* have an auto-boot script, active did not include moving around, or moving inventory.

Generally, if you were not in combat, it meant that every 15 minutes or so, you had to (usually ooc) rest to reset the timer. It was horribly annoying, and also rather disruptive to the overall flow of rp.

And if you were busy and didn't notice the warning message, then soon thereafter you suddenly found yourself looking at a "you have been booted" screen, possibly (likely) cursing and swearing, because the server was full and you couldn't get back on.

Yeah that kinda thing would be seriously annoying to me as well as a lot of others I imagine, I was just trying to think of a sfety net system for those who tend to go over the hour mark, not something small like 20 minutes or so.

I think I know of about 5 people who sometimes sleep on their keyboard. Guess that's not enough to make a script for.

Just ask a DM to change his name and boot him.

I'll keep a closer eye on you from now on Uce, promise! If I see evil drunken AFK taking over, I'll give you the boot of Mercy.

And seriously, yes, if we see people AFK for long periods of time we'll boot, so it's best to just log off if you suspect you might be away for a long while. Think of all those poor DC spammers and their spasming fingers, and have a heart!

Activity is a strangely difficult topic. I might be actively at my keyboard, typing to people while I wait for someone to get done with their RP session (Because they wanted a private conversation, for example), and I might move my camera around and around and around, scoping out for characters to torment until they do get done. Just because I don't move, or hit something, or rest, doesn't mean I'm not active. Just means I'm waiting for something.

Sadly, still, I've gotten booted before, seemingly for 'inactivity', without so much as a Tell asking me if I was there. Rather unfortunate and a vague, rather ridiculous, assumption.

I've woken up with my fair share of 'keyboard face's... though I've never passed out well on Amia, which is a good sign.

Happens to me when other people in the USA want me to stay up longer than I can physically handle (blast the timezone differences!), there's been plenty of times where I've literally fallen asleep.

I may or may not have done this before. In the middle of huge RP once, which was hilarious / disappointing.

I used to fall asleep alot since RP always happens in the wee hours.
Is it possible to script something client-side that auto shuts down after a certain time without activity?

That kind of script adds lag.

Simple fix as stated above.

I've had you booted once for extended afk due to sleeping i believe. Nothing malicious in it, just that the server was 65/65 and you didn't respond to anything typed to you.

Client-side doesn't add lag.

Which basically comes down to saying they'll get a ban if they dont cease, and repent for their AFK sins. For most people, that's as close enough to hell as one can get. >.>

Jewels what sort of j--you know what.. nevermind.

And the DMs should get spimpy outfits to embarrass Uce.. then again I'd say he can't be embarrassed, as he posted that cat image, which rocks btw. I think they met their AFK match.

I usually send Tells to the AFKer - since the Tell has a bright green text. If they respond, good. If not, I wait some 15 minutes. If nothing happens, I leave another tell saying I went on with my business and send a note on the DM channel saying that such PC might be AFK.

I think I did that only twice, though.

However, before doing all of this, I check to see if the server is full. If it's not, I don't bother.

A DM told me once that they don't boot a player for AFKness out of the blue. They also send Tells to said player and also wait for some 15 minutes before booting if no reply comes.

If that's'a comment to my comment, all I can say is the DM at the time either didn't know that or forgot it.

Granted, I suppose we already have an auto-boot timer. Problem? It's only once every four hours, which I think most of us would agree is too short, rather than too long.

Well, we're an RP server, right?

So, DM's, do your thing, even with...nay...*especially* with afk folks.

Since it'd be hard to get a response out of them for a back and forth rp, go with rp that you can totally control the flow of. Say, the pc gets knocked out with a mighty hit to the head, and is then robbed blind by bandits.

I reported some Dwarf char for afk once......the trouble is, on this occasion, the DM stripped the Dwarf naked, relocated him to a more prominent location in Bendir, and added lights, butterflies as if flies buzzing round him, etc, etc..... Unfortunately, said DM also gave a server shout that attracted all kinds of silliness to Bendir (not that I mind a bit of silliness, but, well......meh...)

However, undeterred, I still report AFK-ers when server is full or near-full though.

(There was also a time on a Sunday evening when Uberuce had imbibed well, rather than wisely (at least, I assume so...he was perfectly coherent beforehand, but then was unresponsive for nearly an hour, as I recall) but, alas, no DM was on).

quite frankly any such a afk detect script can be easily by passed with anyone still having some logo techniek lying around. It's easy to have the mouse move or some simple commands being used.

And I to have been guilty of sleeping on my keyboard, though not yet so on Amia. Though I do tend to loose most sense of sentible typing after 04.00 at night, but then that only deepens the RP of one of my characters, that doesn't make much sense at the best of times.
