Is there a king? I know theres a Duke. And are there nobles, a middle class? Commoners? Are mages typically higher class? Is there actually a cordor history other than the quake? Or does everyone come from afar? :?:

From what I know, of the past, the Duke sort of ran off.

The duke is jailed, no real trial is sight. Currently there is a council of the commonwealth in his place, which make all the rules in a sort of democracy. Then you have nobility and merchants, whom are fairly important by virtue of thier money but can only indirectly influence the goverment.

Public outrage? He's supposed to get a "fair trial" but the date seems indefinately post-poned.

I would disagree with the idea of Cordor being a democracy for the following reasons.

*The current business of the Cordorian Commonwealth State (CCS) is that it is ran by the ruling party, with a Politburo (the Cordorian Council).

*The state is a single party state, having only those in power, and those who are not.

*There have been no free and fair elections since the rise of the CCS, excepting the one which put the CCS into power.

*The CCS deals aggressively with threats to it's authority, examples including the heavyhanded suppression of the South Cordorian Riots, and the continuing persecution of the Black Flag.

Therefore I would table the motion that the CCS is in fact a Soviet-style Political body, without the centralised economic fiddling.

Fascism and it's ideological counterparts such as National Socialism, and Integralism tend to nucleate about strong leaders, for example Mussolini.

The Soviet State on the other hand in it's later years, tended to be ran by the Politburo, with the Glorious Leader (Brezhnev etc) simply being the guy
a) with the deciding vote
and
b) who simplifies the international relations of the State with external bodies.

I wonder if he is in the same cell as Bubba, and heh, the fair trail was canceled when his defender vanished.

how about Nazism and hittler being synonymous numbers. or spain with Franco? Those people seem to be the strong leaders of those countries during their time as leader.

Far from fascism. I don't care to analyze and discuss IC politics OOC much, but the Cordorian government meets only very few criteria of fascism, and those are shared by a myriad of political systems.

Cordor is pretty much a city of trade, where status is gained by wealth and public presence/actions. There is a nobility, but it's diminshed of late and it's never held any particularly strong prestige by virtue of family name or history. The way I see it, you have to work to stay on top in Cordor, as the Duke (the latest one, at least) never had a very populous court of nobles who'd get any notable benefits. That is, there may have been a feudal system in place centuries ago, but not for a while anymore. I could be wrong, though.

There's plenty of Cordor history. There's a topic on it somewhere, by Ron. You can search for it.

Any chance of narrowing down the search? I had wanted to find some stuff on Cordor for another topic, but really struggling to find anything coherent. Theres a lot of stuff about Cordor out there, but not a lot on its reliable histroy, so a point in the right direction anyone, please?

To Herkles -
I think you missed my point. I was defining Fascism, National Socialism (Nazism) and Integralism as requiring these strong leaders, whilst saying the Soviet system did not.

With regards to General Franco of Spain, his case is of a Right Wing Coup that overthrew a Leftist Republic via a Civil War to defend a Monarchy. Franco is the example of a successful Dictator, but has no particular Ideological association apart from Nationalist Pride.

To IronAngel -
I agree with the whole status thing, but there is still the matter of having a ruling party of the Commonwealth, and there being those who are not in the part. Refer to my previous post above (handily linked to here) for my reasoning.

Well, he is right, as Kruchov (or how you spell his name, they guy after Stalin) was the last "strong man" of the Soviet Union. Those who followed were either fossils who died within a year, or lacking in ability to excersise absolute authority. So yeah, Cordor can be in a way seen as ruled by a politburo. Or, one can see it as a classic burgoise city modelled after the states that lies in the city belt along the Rhein, and how they functioned from 13-1700.

To Kraniumbrud -
I said the Soviet Union in it's later years in the post you quoted... Therefore your point is null.

To QPR -
Your point about the cities along the Rhine and such, in that area of Germany is a good one actually. Another alternative would be cities like those in the Hanseatic League such as Lubeck, Hamburg, and Bremen.

Though I personally believe cordor is neither facsist or soviet styled state. But more like an oligarchy republic, the type that existed in the anceint world. There are no politcal parties because well, afaik, none exist there is no leading party because so there is none, that is my take on it anyways. In the ancient world when someone ran for office they didn't elect his party, but instead they elected the person them selves. It is a merchant republic, and there are quite a good number of examples to show how they often work in history, carthage, venice, genoa. This is just my take on cordor though.

To Herkles-
I initially thought of this assessment myself until I realised that for all of Cordor being a merchant republic styled along the lines of Carthage or Genoa, I realised that Cordor doesn't have the same social mobility, which an oligarchy or a plutocracy would have.

I mean some of the biggest movers and shakers on the Cordorian economic scene, even by terms of the excess of adventurers, are the Amian Traders Federation.

These merchants are extraordinarily rich, and are also well known among both their clientele and the general populace, and yet Yossarin is not Chief Foreman on the Cordorian Council, Xyrkha does not lead her own political/economic cartel...

To Kraniumbrud-
Who was a plutocracy? The Soviet Union Politburo members were chosen either for connections or ability in their field. They were wealthy only in the sense that the Politburo looked after itself. Certain levels of Wealth were not a requirement for entry.

As for the Rhine river cities, the Merchants certainly had influence but the nature of the cities meant that they tended really to be Oligarchic in nature because except for spectacular financial failure, rich merchant families formed an elite and stayed there, and so it would be the grandson, or greatgrandson of the man who'd actually made the fortune, still in power 100 years later.

This format eventually stabilised into the Elector Princes and such, and these cheeky sods even managed to rule a country. (The United Kingdom, by George IV, Elector Prince of Hanover!)

i ment the rhine cities, but yea..you might have a point, about those families, though i hardly see the cordor council as one that has been inherited by rich families..

And I didn't say the Cordorian Council was a merchant city like the Rhine. I said they were a Later-Years Soviet Style Politburo!

The CCS overthrew the Duke in a palace coup supported by at least some of the guard, AFAIK. Other guards (eg. the Scouts unit) buggered off either before or after.

To me it sounds just like an Oligarchy with poor state organisation i.e. less totalitarian than most of its real-word counterparts.

I know I'm going to remember the word I'm looking for soon, and I'm going to hate myself when I do.
