OOC Vision: To make a faction of Ghaunadaurians, help bring the Underdark to life by giving players options other than Lloth or Vhaeraun (that is giving a 3rd option for UD characters), be active in various Underground regions on Amia, popping up from time to time to interact with surface factions/people (e.g., Sewers below Cordor) and reach out tendrils of finance/intrigue/terror across the isles and to find victims to sacrifice to our Lord of Slime.
Why Ghaunadaur, the Elder Eye?
Because, it tends to attracts outcasts, rebels, freaks (shifters etc), exiled drow and accepts all races and classes (he's a very open God in that regard). He also is a really cool horror from the deep dark and he prefers other faiths as a sacrifice to him...There's also plenty of Jellies, etc to get your summons reskinned into in the module and those mages who love acid would fit in well just as much as an assassin who loves poisons. I feel he's a god that has all the elements to base a great faction around. He's also one of the few Deities that has been around since 1st Edition D&D (Jubilex is his Alt. name).
Classes: ANY. Clerics (especially clerics!), Assassins, Shifters, Mages with focus on Acids/clouds, etc, Blackguards, Palemasters, rogues, etc.
Ranks: Loathsome Ooze(lowest rank in faction), Spawn of the Pit, Eater of Wastes, Noxious Slime, Creeping Doom, and Amorphous Annihilator (Highest Rank)
Races: ANY. However, Underdark races are normally the ones who would join it but the Ancient One cares not. For Drow, Male and Female Drow are equal, it is based on Merit not sex, either sex may shine.
Likely Allies: Non-religious factions of an neutral or evil bent (Black Flag, etc)
Likely Enemies: Priests of other faiths.
How many players do we want? Five would be minimum. More the merrier. We've 3 so far.
Organisation: Priests are above all others. The rest carry out the will of the priesthood. Fairly loose flat structure, as per a Rebel Camp.
Colours: Acceptable colors are copper, amber, flame-orange, russet, gold, dark red, plum, purple, amethyst, violet, heliotrope, mauve, lilac, lavender, black, and silver.
Location: Likely Underport until we've outgrown ourselves, then we'll have our own temple if we get big enough.
Travel: Emphasis will be on using the tunnels and sewers to move around Amia A. On B, you just have to make do with what's there.
Emphasis on PvP? 90% of the time, its plotting, planning, etc, 10% of the time its raiding the surface for a priest to sacrifice. Its a balance between too many sacrifices and other factions will hunt us down, too little and our God gets upset...Aggresion pacts would be sought out before hand with rival factions based on Faith. A sacrifice per day is needed or failing that, the hand in the candle ritual to appease That Which Lurks.
Emphasis on RP? Definitely! Think of it, you'd be in a faction that worships Slimes and Jellies! (ewwww!). Most of them are freaks, horrors, outcasts and some are downright insane...Sacrifice RP will have to be a big part of it but also getting a large chunk of power and finance is also an emphasis. Their tendrils will reach into many plots and schemes as a sort of hidden power on Amia.
Much of the emphasis would be on being accepted because Ghaunadaur cares for you, whilst others reject you. Its like a family of freaks and rebels and exiles. You get to RP a Fanatic, religious nutcase, who turned to HIM when all others would see you die instead. You're crazed for power too and you're with a bunch of other crazy zealots, hooked on power and rejected by society...misfits...
Secretive? Definitely. Given the level we would be despised by both Surfacer and Llothite drow alike, the faction will/must remain secretive at least until its well established, then, like any other evil faction, it'll have its own stronghold, etc...in time....
Because of the pre-dominance of the Llothite Houses, open hostilities with Llothites would not be the emphasis of the faction. It will likely occur from time to time, but more by way of random encounters. If sacrifices from the surface are easier to get than killing Llothites, why bother going for the harder target? Having gone that route with the Silent Blades, I don't think its terribly productive RP to war with close neighbours.
So with all that said, let me know if you're keen??
Secretive? This is one I'm not too sure on, I'd say that at first it'll be relatively unheard of. Then in time, it'll get known. They're certainly going to be far less secretive than Vhaeraunites but they also need to survive as neighbours of the Llothite Houses in the Underdark. Open to suggestions?
To my knowledge most Ghaundans tend to be secretive, just due to self-preservation more than anything else, considering most of the rest of the UD will see them as enemies.

Sound advice I'd say. Quick question on Driders, on Amia, a lot of Driders turn to Ghaunadaur. I assume then, that none worship Lloth anymore, having failed her test at 6th level?

I'm hoping not. The last one she started, lasted a good 6 months before it was IC wiped out. The average life span of most Factions on Amia last a very short time agreed. At its peak it had 8 members. One has joined the Banites, One is getting redeemed in Winya it seems...the rest are dead/buried/left Amia.
But you do make a good point, sustainability of factions...I figure the Vhaeraunians have been around a while as have the major Drow Houses, so who knows...factions are built IC, not on forums. Forums help though, for advertising...

Wether a faction last for six weeks or six months I dont think it matters. The reason for this being that it all generates rp for people to play around. Nothing lasts forever remember.
I have a character who may be interested. Sounds like a fun idea, and it's about time I joined some kind of faction.
I have some issues with the name, though. I don't think any group would refer to themselves as fanatics. Real-world religious fanatics describe themselves as devout or pious. Maybe something along the lines of "Fellowhood of Piety" or "Brothers in Faith" (But less generic and crummy than those!) - something that extolls their (percieved) virtues.

He is, by far, the coolest Drow deity there is. One day, I want him to regain some sanity and gather more intelligent worshipers to challenge Lolth. He is the Elder Elemental, after all, one of the powers who played a major role in corrupting Ilythiir.

Contrary to popular belief, I still want to get this Faction started but I doubt its going to happen overnight because, lets face it, the vast majority of great players already have enough characters and most newbies to Drow, will wish to join the far more immersive environment that is Ultrinnan.
Still, just like the Vhaeraunites, I believe over the longterm, this faction will eventually get itself off the ground, although it'll need to operate underground for quite a while. Most of the recruiting shall be done via conversions with the occassional newbie drow joining the ranks from an early period. Those joining the ranks will operate in secret until the faction is strong enough to stand on its own two feet.
The long term goal is to take over an existing area (e.g., current Ghaunadan temple) and develop that into a proper PC temple and become its own Noble House. Its members will take an active role on any proposed Council/Militia in Underport or in politics in Ultrinnan (though this will be light handed and subtle). Its Roper Tendrils will reach into various plots, finances and schemes going on underground. It'll stir up trouble but usually not overtly, except on the surface, where when properly organised, it'll conduct raids just like any other Drow based faction. I intend for it to be a real kind of Illuminati, with tendrils and tentacles of power flowing into many parts of life...and death...
The Fanatics of the Overflowing Pit have in FR lore been around since the Crown Wars...so it'll have a great history to draw from.

Way to go, killing one of your own Priests is some plan, huh?
Note: If anyone reads the Underdark 3.0 Ed handbook and comes across the main Ghaunadan city of Llurth Dreier, the material in it is incorrect and was admitted to as being wrong by its authors. The correct source is Polyhedron Magazine #140, 'City of Ooze' article which shows it is ruled by 12,000 Aboleths and has over 400,000 population. It could conceivably muster an army of 200,000 in theory and is the largest city and most powerful City in the Underdark. It is purely a One deity city. The 3rd Ed. Handbook lists its Drow population as 60,000 and is fragmented into 4 Drow faiths. This is not true. L. Boyd's article is regarded as the correct source material.

Hate to mention this but in a certain book Lolth mentions that Ghaunadaur is older then Ao himself, and comes and goes, in her words, like a festering boil.
Also note that no one, not even the priests of Ghaunadaur himself, know Ghaunadaurs motives.
You may also wish to inform players that if a sacrifice cannot be found to give to Ghaunadaur once per day, they must sacrifice a piece of themselves to Ghaunadaur...he doesn't care where it comes from. He's also not picky about size...a simple finger dipped in acid or fed to a jelly would suffice.
He is picky about one thing though...sacrifices. Priests MUST sacrifice something once per day. A living thing or a piece of themselves, usually burned off by acid or eaten by a slime.
This is good for those one legged drows and such. Most priests of Ghaunadaur are missing something.

I'm quite sure that it is canon that Ao came first meaning that either Lloth is wrong or the author's wrong (or that I am, I suppose).

Incorrect. (The Sacrifice once per day thing is correct though). The correct information on the daily sacrifice ritual is in the link above.
Here it is in full though:
If a priest is unable to procure such offerings, the priest must pray while holding one hand in an open flame. The priest's hand must be covered with any magical oil or potion. (Oils or potions of fire resistance are instantly converted to lamp oil, with the appropriate results.) If the prayer is accepted (55% chance), the hand is healed of any damage it sustains immediately after sustaining it.

Ghaunadaur has some sort of reference about darkness before existence....and because of it his thoughts and motives border on the purely instinctual lvl. And regardless of what anyone thinks about the books or whether or not they are cannon in terms of Amia, Drizzt books and War of the Spider Queen all have plots that lead to the next source book.
Lady Penitent series shows how Lolth does away with the other gods and dominates Supreme...
Speaking of which will there ever be a Dark Elf/Drow distinction? Dark elves have neither Dark Vision/Innate Drow abilities. Dark Brown skin, usually odd colored eyes, and black hair.
Also I don't believe Ghaunadaur worshippers ally with ANYONE....they're kind of nutty that way.

Ghaunadaur appears in other parts of the DnD world (in other Crystal spheres) so its possible that he's older than Ao. It's an import from Gary Gygax's early days...under the name of Jubilex.

The only stipulation is that they will not ally with other religions but they do tend to crave power, so any way of weaving their tentacles and finances into trade networks, slave markets or whatever else is fine. Thus, it'd be perfectly acceptable for the faction to ally itself with the Black Flag or ACTF or whatever else non-good non-religious faction. Part of the dogma is to try new things and experiences. You paint them as a bunch of nuts (well, yes, in many ways they are) but don't mistake that being stupid. They do after all, control THE largest city and most powerful city in the whole of the Underark....(400,000 strong Drow city)
To put this into perspective, Menzoberranzan is said to be between 20,000 to 32,000 drow...

Welcome in advance new member (well, when the initiation is done we can welcome IC too!). You know who you are...the cult grows stronger....*shifty Eye*

Right sooo...4 PCs, 3 players is the body count so far.
We're still in need of a shifter to play the resident 'Drider' role and a couple of warriors (Blackguards or whatever) and we'll be a well balanced faction *cough*, ready to..."Take over the world!" mwahahahahahahaaaah!
I'll start on the faction board (I'll try and find colours pleasing to the Elder Eye, lest we get struck down). It'll have to be external until we're much more established to prove we're not just a fad cult and all that....

Okie dokes, an initial meeting has been held and a brief summary has been posted under Reports on our Faction boards.
Only members can read certain sections of the Ghaunadaur board. I have noticed many members have failed to register so a gentle reminder to register is warranted.
The three characters who are yet to be co-opted in, we'll need to organise a time IC to arrange a conversion and initiation RP. I'm hoping to have this done over the next few days, at which point, you too should register on the faction board.
I am glad there is quite a great deal of interest in the faction and I'd like to thank the Llothites and Vhaeraunite factions for allowing us "room to breathe IC" whilst new and finding our feet (or tentacles).
Eventually, if the faction gets well established (lets hope!), we'll ask about moving the boards over to the main Amia site but little steps are necessary and I don't see it warranted as yet.

All is well in slime land. "House Slithering" is coming along nicely (JJ).
I'd just like to thank all those who have gotten involved IC, either as faction members or other drow or just others in general, a big thanks for allowing this new entity to slide and ooze its way to life!
There appears to be quite a bit of interest amongst other players too, considering the faction. So to clarify a few things:
Druids are accepted by That Which Lurks and the spawn of moander summon is ideal for the RP. In PnP, they're usually called Oozemasters I think (Lords of Madness book?). Shifters are also welcome as are more assassins and other various classes.
Unlike in Llothite Drow society where they play 'the game of bones' and kill each other off. In Ghaunadan societies like Llurth Dreier, its forbidden for faithful to war with each other. That's why Menzoberranzan for instance, as a small population of 20,000 and why Llurth Dreier has a population of 400,000 (plus the Arboleths there rule it well).
Ghaunadan society, instead, concentrates its efforts against priesthoods and religions of other faiths and societies that worship false gods (any other god), not against itself.
There are other main differences in Ghaundanan societies that I'd like to point out. The first main one is, their soceities are not matriarchal at all. They're not patriarchal either. In fact, its a meritocracy where favour is delivered by sacrifice delivery. The more one sacrifices to That Which Lurks, the higher your credo. So male priests or female priests can lead.
Our faction, I am roleplaying as being a small enclave or outpost in the backwater of Amia, of the city of Llurth Dreier. That is, that city is so powerful, it can afford to send some of its children on missions to far off lands to establish "missions" who try to set up churches with a missionary zeal. If you're creating a new PC who you specifically want some background for, its quite possible that you could say that your PC has been sent as a reinforcement from Llurth Dreier to aid in the missionary efforts.
That city is ruled by 12,000 aboleths who control people through psionics. However, since Amia frowns on psionics, your PC will not have psionic abilities. He or she may, however, have been a thrall and have acted so loyal that they allow you freedom to act independently, now that you're faithful. This is particularly true for non-drow races, who are usually thrall slaves in Llurth Dreier.
Llothite society, with their matriarchal culture, would be a very alien concept to your PC. However, you'll have been given orders currently, to spy on them so the usual 'acting' abilities whilst there is fine (play along with their system and culture).
I hope that throws out some ideas to anyone interested in having a Ghaunadan society background for their new pc.

There has been a few recent changes, namely that we're forming a House name (Vin'taelhess) based upon one of the major houses of Llurth Dreier and that the Sect is a small fanatical outpost of the home city and also because the Fanatics of the Overflowing Pit are, strictly speaking, a Crusader Order for Ghaunadaur which, only admits Drow, Ghaunadan (the creatures), Aboleth's and Illithidrow from what I can tell and probably wouldn't admit the slave races.
In other words, the faction is gaining a bit more structure and aligning itself on correct official lore.

I have updated the Rules of Succession. I think you'll find they're pretty fullproof on how a new leader gains power in our faction and what is expected of them.
Also, could Tobia1337 who plays sharcu contact us IG please? We need to discuss an exit strategy for your PC, whether as a sacrifice or other method...

Joined: 26 May 2006 Location: Down Under, calculating your demise with blunt expressions.
Personally I'm not phased by the "I'm better then you lesser" attitude of Ultrinnan Drow towards non-Drow underdarkers but if you're uncomfortable with that kind of RP and don't want to go to the surface, the slime freaks are good people to interact with. They won't throw slime at you simply for being a "Lesser" (whether they think it or not is irrelevent).
Well, all creatures have their place in Ghaunadaur's society. For our own House Vin'taelhess that order is:
Savant Aboleth (Priests/esses of Ghaunadaur)
Aboleth's (Ghaunadaur worshipping Aboleth are the top of the food chain)
Slimes/Oozes/Ropers/Jellies (Revered in a similar way to spider's in Llothite society)
Priests/Priestesses (usually always Drow)
Drow. illithidrow, Ghaunadan & Shadow Elves
All other free Races aligned to Ghaunadaur (Servants/Bodyguards/Retainers)
House Slaves
-----
Then there are non-believers called "Unbelievers". All Unbeliever's must be converted or destroyed eventually but may be useful to further our own agenda. In which case, they're tolerated. All priests of rival faiths (i.e., ALL other faiths) must be destroyed and/or sacrificed. Lay worshippers are tolerated providing they're useful or powerful enough not to be destroyed.
It is important to note that Unbelievers are lower than House Slaves in Ghaunadaur's societies.

Big roper hugs to all the new members who've joined in droves...may our altars be fed with the corpses of other false faiths and unbelievers!
Big oozey hugs to those who've taken part in the 'suicide bomber' trials and other new methods of spreading terror to surfacers. I've got a few other toys I'd like to test for our terror teams.
Please, if you can, don't go hanging out in Cordor or other major surface towns. We need to Lurk underground and only come to the surface to spread terror and fear of That Which Lurks. I particularly don't want our people well known up above. If you need to go to Cordor, try to stay in the sewers, only coming above ground to shop etc... IF you need to. Get in, get out, don't hang about. Stay hidden on the surface as much as possible. Stealth or invisibility. Underport is your new found home, that is your 'Cordor' for social RP. Cordor itself is a place to hate, fear and despise and a place to terrorize.

//I haven't been in much at all this week in game. Work has taken over my life right now to the point I'm working real late and am generally stuffed when I get home. Just as soon as I get the energy I'll be back in the ring.
In the meantime, those looking to interact or whatnot, speak to Maximus25 in tells IG if you wish to get involved. I'll try and get back in game this weekend.

my svirf, Meradoc Olavefiene, is a ghaunadaur buddy but isn't in the faction yet. look out for me in game. my other characters I might be using are Neae'a Blossom and Sezslaak.
//Given my prolonged absence due to illness and the fact that I'm not fully recovered, I believe its probably best that the faction continues under new leadership (since I know some of the characters are still around and playing in game) or that if no one steps forward, that we wind up this faction.
I am not in any position to lead a faction right now even though I have returned to play individual characters. I just don't have the energy levels to play for prolonged periods and I doubt right now that I'll make a good leader given these facts.
Therefore, I put forward my cleric for sacrifice or assassination, as per the rules of our faction for control of the leadership, providing a suitable replacement PC can be found. We all know that this is part of the joy of the Ghaunadaurian leadership, eventually your PC should end up dead and I believe that day has come for mine.
If other members would prefer to wind it up, let me know, OOC, I'm happy with either solution.
I'll keep the external faction board running in case there is ever interest in reviving the Ghaunadaurians by other players. I'm sure we can work something out.
Note: I can still play my non-leader PC from time to time though...
