I was wondering - we have a sort of .. common headpack that isn't necessary to play on the server, but the majority of people use (I would assume).
What would the population think about gathering some sort of common portrait pack for use on the server? Personally, I find the limited amount of portriats available in NWN kind of suffocating.. but at the same time, it seems almost pointless to add portraits for my own use when no one else could see them. This becomes particularly bothersome when I want to get a portrait at least in the ballpark of the head I've chosen for the character.. Or when I want to do something a little different (I would imagine the drow players might have a desire to have more than the .. three? drow portraits available)
Just a thought. Constructive comments welcome.

We do have one, sort of: you can submit your PCs' portraits to Nekh, and she is supposed to update them into this Amian Portraits file she supposedly still hosts somewhere. She hasn't been updating it for ages though, so people still don't see Kalliniel's portrait. As if she had better things to do!

what are the rules concerning portrait submitting? I could round up quite a few en masse.. I've got a lot of artwork of my own divising, and more than a handful of art books laying around by artists already featured in the portrait packs we have now.
Let me know.

There are plenty of portraits to portray your character's appearance or personality. I've never had a need of new packs, the one I have is more than enough for my use.

Send them to Nekh - once enough have been gathered a new portrait pack will be released.
For the moment there's still Amian portrait packs under the download section though

Yea, I just DLed them. =)
I'll have to make some more portraits for people to use for their own. =P

The point of the pack is to share the portraits you/other players use with the whole playerbase, so you can see eachother's special portraits. It's not so much about giving new alternatives at character creation, though that's always an option though. (I'd be sad to see someone use the Kir'nack portrait that a friend NWN-ized for me, but such is life.) The net's full of portraits, so you might as well go look for the one just right for your character, and then contribute it to the Amian pack so that others will see it. With the dozens of easily-available portrait packs around, I don't think we need yet another with the goal of just offering many new options.

Out of curiosity.. if someone wanted to say.. add another head.. would there be any chance of an updated Amian Headpack, in the way there are updated Portrait packs?
Just a thought.

Well, there's a cost for the portrait inclusion for a reason if you want everyone to see it - and even that's not guaranteed unless they've downloaded the portraits pack, or updated it.
That's due to the work done on the server-side, as well as uploading them, etc.
If we suddenly say that all portraits can be used for everyone, and just include them, I'll be one of those on the long list of DC refunds.
Regards,

Couldn't care further then I can throw a house which isn't much considering I know I can't throw a house so I don't care to think about it.
Unlike the hands and heads, portraits are an extremely minor thing. I've never downloaded any portrait pack and I'm still alive and kicking.

I really like the addtitional portraits, there are some really awesome pics among them.
But mainly I downloaded them to be able to see the portraits of those characters which don't have the standard NWN ones.
I think custom portraits can add more atmosphere, because the standard ones don't always reflect how you imagine your character to be like.
On the other hand these portraits have been added for certain characters so I can understand what IronAngel wrote. I was also thinking of using some of those portraits for new characters. Some of them are just great! But then I thought how disappointed the player, who originally wanted to have this portrait added to the portrait pack, would be when he sees someone else running around with the portrait that was intended to make his own character kind of unique.
Like so often, there are two sides of the medal.
But I think it's a good idea to share those portraits with the other players to let them be able to see your awesome pics as well.

Maybe we could do a Portrait Pack free for all. Where people can make portraits they think people would like or they would want to use later on in the future. It's sharing creative ideas in a way? yes?
It's a thought. I understand, I wouldn't want anyone using my own character portrait but I'm willing to make other ones for other people to use. =D
think about it. it's a thought.

Here's the problem with that. The other reasons (I suspect) there's a DC cost to having your custom portrait included on the Server-side, and including them in the "new" download package for peeps to download is due to just that -
People found a specific portrait, and used their own DC's to include it for their own character.
So yus, it would suck if I logged into Amia to find some shmuck took Frey's portrait for his own when I found it and paid the DC's to have it included.
It's another thing to Personalize your character.
Don't make portrait updates available to anyone, please.
Just leave it like it is, in regards to costing DC's.
Regards,

Actually Frey, the way portraits work... you're paying for the leto work. Nothing else. You're paying for us to pop open your PC file and change a text string. All portraits are stored ocally. All the portraits setting in your character file is, is a text string that tells NWN what filename to look for. When you see another person's PC, it searches you computer's folder for a picture with that file name. If there's nothing there, you just see the default "beige portrait".
What the portrait pack does is let you download it, and have it on your computer. You can actually update your own portrait locally by simply overwriting the picture in your portrait folder with another of the same name. It will change for you in game, but others will still see the old portrait unless you give them the new one to overwrite the old one with. Doing that is quite free ad will cost you no DCs, since we don't need to open Leto to change a filename.
That said, yes, people tend to be attached to their portraits for one reason or another, be it they found it and liek it, or in some cases, because it was commisioned art just for them, a gift, they drew it themselves, what have you.
But Nekhy's ruled that as a DM team and you as a player have no authority to request another player to change their portrait becausse you had it first, so... not much we can do. If you're worried, only hand it out to your friends and don't include it in this.

every portrait in the pack that starts with amiabb...
feel free to use 'em.
Also, frey, what you do is:
you create a portrait for your PC, with a certain name (like my amiabb... ones) every time you want to update the portrait you just overwrite it and send it in to the pack... which will overwrite the portrait of everybody using it as soon as they download the new pack and update the portraits to their newest versions

I'm confused now... haha. This is free right?? Doesn't cost me DCs does it??
If that's the case, then ill send people my portrait instead. >.<
I could just be going crazy, isn't the 1st time. Just wanted to clear that up.
Also, I'll just send in my own characters' portraits instead of creating more. =D
