| Post subject: | New guy with a question about subraces |
Hello, I'm new here to Amia, and I have a couple of quick questions about making an air genasi character. First of all, does it matter what base race I use. After searching the forums I could only find examples of genasi with human bases. I was wondering if, since I'm not overly fond of the human heads, if I could make my base elf. Mind you I'm not asking if it is technically possible, rather if it would be in any way offensive to any of the Amia community. Secondly, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions as to which color I should use for skin and hair. I've tried a few combinations with varying levels of success. If anyone has played an air genasi and also made them look, well neato for lack of a better word, I would appreciate that insight. Enough of me, thank you for your time. |

Mechanics-wise you can take Genasi, aasimar or Tiefling with any of the base races. Any advantages the base race has gets replaced by the subrace bonuses so in the end it doesn't matter. Lore-wise, Aasimars and Tieflings only apply to humans. It hasn't stopped people from using the other races as the base race though, I've seen too many elven Aasimars and tieflings. I'm not sure about Genasi personally. |

Genasi, Tieflings and Aasimar have been used as a sort of catch-all for any plane-touched, not just those that are primarily, on Amia. For instance, there's Celadrin among the elves, which could be considered Elf Aasimar, if I recall rightly. This wiki page has a list of some others: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planetouched I've seen a Halfing Air Genasi, countless Elf (Insert Element) Genasi... I don't believe everyone necessarily likes it for various reasons, but I also don't believe it's particularly against rules as long as you're not going over the top with it. In general, if it isn't a Fire/Air/Water/Earth Genasi or if it is a specific type of Celestial or Fiendish plane-touched (such as the more bizarre ones on that wiki list), you should make a request just to get it cleared. That's my advice anyway, speaking from experience. As for your style question, the classic appearance of a typical Air Genasi (whatever that is...), especially on Amia, has tended to be pale blue skin with white hair. This isn't the only shape of them, however. The amount of elemental heritage varies between people, some manifesting more obvious traits, others more subtle. As you've probably already read other places, they tend to have wild and "wind-swept" looking hair; there's a few heads across the genders that could help to get that affect across, if you wanted. I would say, though, that much of your specific appearance quirks are simply going to need to be expressed in your bio. |

Thanks for your responses. I'll probably just take the safe route and make the base human. As for the color scheme, I'll just tinker around for awhile and see what I can come up with. I've just never made a character with a funky skin color, and now that I see what I have to work I have to say that I don't blame myself. Anyway, thanks again. |

That's my advice anyway, speaking from experience. There's a couple of very special planar subraces for other race types, that are not permitted to be RP'd when taking an Amia planar subrace. Such as the demonic elven fey that I forget the name of right now... Amian planars are indeed a generic planar subtype, nothing fancier than that in the end. It's a planar template slapped on the character, actually, moreso than an actual subrace. edit: And this wasn't a reply to Letum.. rather an appendix. |

The Elven Air Genesai look I've been seeing lately weirdly looks very close to the Snow Elf look from what I've seen of the one Air Genesai Elf AA. Illithira keeps talking In'ninatuin to them XD. |

Unless that was a special case, you're probably mistaken; Genasi racial type changes to Outsider (with all the benefits and flaws). You have to be Elf or Half-Elf to become an Arcane Archer, which Air Genasi don't mechanically qualify for, just as a Genasi Dwarf couldn't become a Dwarven Defender |

Hmm well, she Looks almost identical to Illithira, has AA special arrows (the ones that require a will save or be stunned type thing), is an Elf. Maybe she's actually RPing an Avariel? dunno... |

Welcome to the new player. If you are good or neutral come to the Dale and meet Belladonna. If you are nasty and evil then run in fear or at least do not attract the Dales attention or we will leave you for crow bait XD. |

In normal PnP Gensai, Aasimar, and Tiefling are primarily humans (apparently other races are not as eager to get kinky with an outsider) But they can applied to anything on Amia |

I also have a planar subrace question, but didn't want to bother with a new topic since this can be answered with one guy's post and not take up extra space. Could I use a regular genasi or other semi planar subrace to represent another? for example, would it be ok to use a hin tiefling for a d'hin'ni, or a genasi for a para-genasi of smoke/dust/sand etc.? I am currently obsessed with non standard planars and would like to know what is a legitfeas way to go about this. |

Not without a special request http://amiaworld.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16162 Anything that is not on that side bar, needs a request. |

of course. I plan on requesting it as soon as I look up some lore and stuff. I guess my question is more along the lere any lines of is there any chance of this being accepted? |

Yush. With special characters, it is recommended to use a subrace/template from Amia's selection closest to the race you are requesting, if possible. |
