I highly doubt the Latin names were originally from movies. >_>

Anyhow: if we use Latin to represent Loross or some clerical language in the setting (which seems reasonable enough), then it's fitting that people take on Latin names when they join a clergy, as a symbol of being reborn.

The one that Russel Crow used in The Gladiator was made up by the film crew. I know cause I saw an interview where they discuss it and it's as bad as Neo or Captain Kirk would be. I just tend to ignore those names anyway so I'm not as irked about them as some.

We should be GLAD that there's so many new players. And it's our responsibility to GUIDE them with friendly tells and encouraging words

But i am not against a sign in the entry. In fact, since our dms have spoken our that the MINORITY is reading our forums, perhaps we should put even more info in the entryroom then before.

Some of us have been using pseudo latin to represent ancient netherese for a few years now.

On names though, one thing to consider is that a name doesn't have to be a birth name, it can be an alias used for so long it becomes a "real name". Given habits many have of just using the name over the character anyway, it's less immersion breaking to see "Tommy Two-tone" or "Mr. Pink" then to hear people say "Timothy Smith" and have to be corrected because no one knows that name.

Edit: Yes I used movie references of aliases. No you shouldn't for your character.

Loross is High Netherese, yes.

The concept of a "real name" is also interesting. It's a pretty blatant cultural bias to say the name you're given at birth is the "real" one. That's not the theory and practice in many historical and contemporary societies in the real world, and probably not in much of Toril either. In many cultures, children are given names only until they undergo some initiation rite, at which time they take a new name with personal significance.

As for references to real people or other fiction, that is also very common even on high-profile characters and players/DMs. There's a gray area of good taste that doesn't conform to the letter of the rule.

All in all, the matter is too complex to codify in a few generalizations.

I thought Latin was representing Celestial. But that's another topic.

I'm the first one who's making references from the movies/books for my RP and characters, but I'm doing it in a subtle way. Naming my character Morgul Nogalacna is one thing, naming it Ancalagon the Black is another. In both LOTR references are present, but one of them is legal and subtle, and another is not. I mean, I remember seeing Vincent Vega once, and the player was absolutely positive that there's nothing wrong with that.

We have a very shiny example of such a character on Amia, except that ____ is not hovering above the character's head. A very few selected people know the "real name" and even they are using the alias when speaking to him. As someone already said, nobody told you that you cannot call yourself CHOSEN OF CYRIC, KING EDWARD, WIGHT or EVIL NECROBUTCHER in your RP, but in order to have that one actually hovering above your head, one needs to file a formal request.

Yes, the subtle references are brilliant, and I enjoy them. I threw in the disclaimer before my example spawned another thread in this topic about character names directly ripped from movies.

I honestly hate this, though this trend used to be worse and there are names that have been allowed because they were loose permutations, but I report this or usually make sure the player knows that a name is unacceptable under the rules first.

That said, I tryto be flexible on my feelings with this. A character named Dante Blackmoore ((Real example)) Isn't necessarily a reference to either the author Dante or the video game character, but when I see a white haired tiefling running around in a red coat named Dante, that's a way different story.

Also if I ever see a red white and blue monk again named Kap Tin Merika I will murder someone, just sayin'

I find all of the space and dots between, after, in the middle of people's name because of their gazillion and five rebuilds to be immersion breaking but >.>; I know I'm a minority in that one!

Also. Completely unimportant.

I'm pretty sure every squid in Underport violates the naming rules. Personally, I find it humorous. That being said, if someone's name is retarded, maybe your character should just treat their character as having been descended from retards. It is not impossible to name a child something ridiculous, just unlikely (but more probable when retards / and or drugs are involved!).

Only a slim minority of our players actually read through the forums properly, let alone actively take part in it.

This rule is already mentioned in the journal as it is. DMs actively rename characters with inappropriate names (especially if they're reported), so if it bothers you otherwise, you should probably chill out.

That should be fine. It's things like Elminster or Halaster that the naming rule applies against.

Also the names of gods/archdemons/archdevils/etc are also frowned upon.

Except that most of the examples you named make sense in the setting. Elminster and Halaster probably didn't have unique names made up by their parents, and especially since they've become famous the names would have become popular. I'm sure there are dozens if not hundreds of Elminsters around Faerûn. Torm the Thief is also one of the original Realms PCs-turned-NPCs. Given how many Marys and Jesuses the world is full of, it shouldn't be surprising to find kids named after Chauntea or Selûne (especially since the latter is also the moon).

I guess you'd have to be a pretty bad parent to name your kid Orcus, though.

I have a DM approved character whose displayed name is Ghost, so I was just pointing out my own hypocrisy before. That is not his real name, but I sometimes take serious measures to prevent metagaming. Floating names should not even be there at all.

I'm rarely dead serious when I post on this forum. But still, my immersion is probably more fragile than yours is. You can disagree with me all you like, and even be snarky or passive-aggressive about it if it satisfies you, but it doesn't change how I feel about this stuff. I'm not going to name any characters or players to avoid this topic from devolving further. I appreciate well thought out names that respect the setting we play in, that is all.

I think the topic is more in line with the server's rules about naming your characters rather than what would be common on Faerun. Though I'm not entirely sure what the DM ruling would be if I named my next mage Halaster or Khelben.

Just out of curiosity... what would be the consensus on using a deity name from another setting? Or even the name of a land itself (i.e. Krynn), as in from the Dragonlance campaign? Just wondering.

As long as a name is more or less consistent with the setting, it should be fine. Krynn is a good example of a common name which also happens to be the name of something important in another setting.

666: but the server rules are there to enforce setting-appropriate names, nothing more or less. If there is a discrepancy between the two standards (what's cool on Amia and what's appropriate for the setting), then the former must be adjusted. I do have a problem with the wording of the naming rules (or whatever they were the last time I checked), but I've always been able to ignore them and nobody's questioned my names. If they did, I would just explain why it makes sense.

I would be a lot more positive to names from our setting (like naming your child Damara; no different from Chelsea or Sydney) than names from other fiction. Bruenor is a Faerûnian dwarf name; Gimli is not. Subtle and witty intertextual references are cool, but just ripping a made-up name from another fantasy series is unimaginative, lame and probably bad for the atmosphere.
