Hmm... I have to say, the DMs do a wonderful job with grabbing NPCs and having them interact with you and things of that nature.
Furthermore.. The do a wonderful job on just interacting as a whole, to players hunting parties and ect.

That's why they're DMs. Well, except for Silent. He got in via sexual favours.

As this has been beaten to death I'll keep this short and sweet. I love this server and sometimes I too get discouraged and feel unnoticed by DMs whenever I don't receive DCs. Then I rember that even though I want those neat little wings and whatnot that if I find myself enjoying the RP I am having at the current time then why waste time making a new awesome character when you have a fully developed one right in front of you? RP is immersive by nature, and if I find myself feeling that I love to pop out that wand and see the person rewarded. Innovation is key, fin that unique angle that not only captivated others..but yourself as well. I love when someone RPs *chops the head off the kobold viciously* when hunting because it adds to the immersion effect of Amia. Even more so, gather people! Make something happen outside of the current events. Real characters would do this. They hold discussions meetings sermons and so on. A DM would likely notice a gathering of people -actually- RPing something of quality more than they will notice two people standing in cordor all day to no end. If this is lengthy and poorly typed...I blame iPhone because I'm so much of a nerd I typed this with it.

I have to agree that I love when during a hunt someone emotes something you know they are doing. It reminds me of that extra detail you throw in when in PnP :3
And it is something I try to work on... but forget to do >_<

See what I mean? I see your point, and I think that works on a server where everyone's primary tongue is english... but I have had several instances on this server where I have had a typo and received a query from the other about what my character had just said.

While hunting, or doing something is where I tend to enjoy RP, My typing and thinking skills are not up to standing around in a town emoting complex relationships and gossip with larger groups for long, and it's not IC for Eroki either. However I do enjoy and admire seeing others with skill in this area, I just struggle to keep up.
For me enjoyable Amia is IC RP of any sort or quality and not //OOC party chat. And a nice slow dungeon crawl with lots of IC discussions along the way (and no /p chatter) is always enjoyed.
So visit Eroki at the Kohl smithy if you've got a good IC reason to go somewhere, and you need an extra axe to help cleave a nasty foe.... (as long as you are going to leave that contagious /p chat off).

Something I never, never see, is people being descriptive with their combat during hunting.
Personally, I type very quickly, so I can afford to do this while battling, but I love to describe how im brutally killing the monsters, with it spells, or a blade.
I think it makes hunting far more fun

Unfortunately the NWN combat engine and the build thread invariably means that you end up emoting 'follows the trail of bodies left behind by all the battle-crazed dwarves.'

Yeah it gets really hard to properly emote while fighting, from my experience. Especially when you are epic pwning things :/

Ha, laughed at that... yes exactly the problem, I even struggle some times to get a few healing kits applied before the frontrunners have spawned the next batch... It would be nice to catch your breath and discuss the epic battle afterwards. Naivatkal wrote: Yeah it gets really hard to properly emote while fighting, from my experience. Especially when you are epic pwning things :/ Yep, though My Sovereign seems to manage it at times quite well, and it is a pleasure to watch. I sometimes try to it on easy monsters, but I am normally about 30 seconds too late with my *With a mighty sweep of his axe the shield splinters into many pieces, tearing into ____ flesh... *. So by the time I get it out all the opponents are long dead, and I look stupid, or I just delete it. Party chat is the real killer, I guess because it's not so character and event driven it is easy to spam it, and once a group starts, it tends to quickly increase in volume and drown out any attempts at RP real quick. On a few occasions I have given up on any attempts at RP and thought, well it's good XP at least...

I manage to emote during combat by typing while I'm fighting, preparing it for the next spawn. So I run in, cleave a monster, then just hit enter and I have a good paragraph of combat emotes. If you get a good paragraph of text and the monsters are dead, just hold it until you hit the next spawn. Sure, sometimes you'll lose the paragraph when a party member asks you a question- but those are rare enough.
This is a bit hard to do with a Hips spammer, mind you. But not impossible.

I never really thought about it that way, Silent. Haha. You and Yoss are good at pointing out ways that things may "break the world" for people that I never really considered. I might adopt that attitude.
I don't think I have specific criterion. To me, RP... it's like a good story. You kinda just know. Some are good because they're daring, controversial, dramatic, simple and effective, give you twists, intelligent, emotional, etc etc etc... but no matter what it is, what you pin it on, ya kinda just know after those first few chapters. (And I'm usually up for going halfway through a book before deciding it's not good, if someone tells me I should give it chances. Same with RP!)

I've had my dwarf speaking like a geordie (newcastle, UK for those unfortunate to not know) in combat, singing too however bad I always try to rp something because its just boring if its just numbers popping above your head and the odd critical notification, sure sometimes it kills me but oh well.

Actually, I have been considering the idea of turning off party chat outside of town. From what I have read and experienced it has basically become a replacement for the Shout channel, which obviously is disabled because of the massive problems it would cause if sixty-odd players were all shouting at once.
When someone uses the party channel to talk about stuff that has nothing to do with in-game, instead of telling them politely to stop we either stay silent, which near enough gives them license to cheerfully ramble on, or we join in the discussion, Either way, it's a distraction that we could afford to do without, at least until the party gets back to town and goes off to resupply or sell their spoils.
If you think about it, there are a lot of party chat conversations that could be saved for those occasions. Everything that you do in character though, can be done without needing the party channel.
Of course, I would rather that everyone just used the party chat responsibly.

I'm with ainjyll. When it's blatant that you're making other people suffer ICly because of your OOC party chat, I'd be annoyed (if I could tell). I can't because I'm hardly ever partied with anyone because it annoys ME most of the time -- and the lag -- so I wouldn't ever know! If you can't turn everyone off as a DM, I'd die if I were one.

I think most people suck pretty badly. They won't even write out complete sentences with fullstops and funny stuff like that.
It's sad, they play themselves and act silly and everything, but the truth is that most players are boring or annoying.

Unintelligible RP can only be bad RP, even if it's good RP. And having to stop RPing to spend even a small amount of time rereading a sentence and then rereading it again, trying to decipher it, is as immersion-breaking as any /party chat ever was.

Quote: What impresses -you-? Until I got here...little. Old dog at RPing, started in the "Tunnel and Troll's PnP days...and yes, I'm dating myself. So I've seen alot of "RP" that was worse then dinner theater for real life trolls.... That being said....what does impress me is when a player is willing to give their character life...to truly put on the mantle of that character and has the capacity to make them a very believable being in and of themselves. Typing the way a character really would talk. Acting as the character would act. Not simply calculating the "best possible outcome" and then manufacturing a way to get it with some swipe at being RPed. You''re a Triad Knight? And you walk around with someone towing an undead? Epic fail in my book. You're a follower of Mask that wears the symbol of your god openly? Another epic fail.... You're Paladin refuses to adventure with a red dragon kin? Or is always the last one to flee from a fight, making sure the others live while standing a good chance of biting the big one? Epic Win. You're willing to put your character on the line for the dreaded "perma death" for the RP? Major Epic Win.... Quote: What do you consider "excellent Roleplaying"? Above are some examples but mostly, when you put on your character like an actor in a movie or play. When you breath into that character life that enhances the enjoyment of logging into the server for others. When even if you are a really evil character that people hate you still are that evil character but folks know that its a persona and that the person BEHIND that character is NOT THAT CHARACTER...that is good RP too... Keep the feel of the RP as much as possible. One thing that kinda bums me out is alot of PARTY chat...it breaks the immersion of the RP when you are seeing Xor the Paladin: Time to spill some blood! CHARRRRGE! Gimix the Rogue: *flicks out his two daggers and move slowly behind the lich* [Party]Man did you see that game last night?] [Party]yeah, they got owned] [Party]Hey where the hell are you guys at?] Lich: *turns to face Gimix* You can't sneak up on me you little waste of my maigc (death ray hits Gimix) Gimix: (roaring down as he hits the floor) [Party]Holy FECK, I rolled a damn 1 on my save! I needed a 2!] [Party]Sucks to be you.] [Party] NFW! You serious? Daaaaaaaaammmmnnn. You get my drift....some "party" or "ooc" has to happen but keep it as little as possible. If you get pick pocketed and your character don't notice...then YOU shouldn't notice. People that carry "useless" items like a flower or foods that the use for RP. Books, notes, etc... Things like that....anything to keep the world we are in when we are in game real to those around us. THAT to me is excellent roleplaying.

That and it'd be really boring if people were left incapable of metagaming the fact their comrade is off in a far distant area and about to be involved in some heavy duty kidnapping or outnumbered rp, thus needing some oddly conveniently timed saving. Metagaming your comrade's location and going to rescue them without any RP that points you in their direction is bad, in my opinion. Them telling you OOC exactly what's going on so you can run to the rescue is even worse. More to the point, if they are in your party, why are they so far away and suddenly in need of your help? Are you all so complacent about your personal safety that you just wander off when you feel like it without anyone asking if you need an escort? As I said, I would rather that players used the party chat responsibly. But I'm not so optimistic that I will just sit back and expect them to. If we need to start banning players from party chat (individually, say) to remind them that it is a privilege and not a right, that's unfortunate but it's not like they haven't been warned by the DMs already. How many times have you seen a Shout from the DMs to knock off the rowdy party chat? Seems to me it's at least once an evening at least.

Dude. That's RP.
You're constantly getting IC consequences for OOC actions. Most people (aside from me that I know of honestly, sometimes) will win 100% of the time, if it's possible. When they don't, I would say it's 99% of the time due to the fact that they're OOCly uncapable. I'm giving another1% of the population the benefit of the doubt that sometimes they either know their character wouldn't do that even if they were smart enough and sometimes they purposefully lose either because their character wants to or some other reason. PVP? Yes. DM plots? Same deal.
...that's why there's drama sometimes.

There's a point though where if the player can't help the fact they are dyslexic and struggle with typos fairly often, there's only so much that it can be fairly considered ICly. (if they decide to take a simple route and always have their characters with accents that make sense for the potential typos, then great but that does seem to lose weight after a while)

You are being nitpicky, Grymia. I'm saying if the sentence is literally not understandable, I don't see how an IC comment would hurt. In fact, I got the idea from Silent and Yoss! (Not actually, but how often they come up with ways to not break the walls of the world.)

But no, I'd say pretty much playing the role good, enforcing the setting and making the world look more real in a way. A character not fit to the world, no matter how good its played, will allways stick out to much for me tbh.

You know when it's good, because your drawn to the source. Whether its by the book, against the grain, or totally out there, when you look at the clock and realize it's way later than you thought, then you've just had some good roleplay, and that's all that matters.

It's sad, they play themselves and act silly and everything, but the truth is that most players are boring or annoying. I'm... confused. What are you talking about? I can't figure out what you are trying to say. Sirrry squirrel. Would this conversation right there have happened in game and ICly, your response would have been a beautiful example of the nuthead-players out there. They are always trying to be witty, unable to act things out and instead making a joke out of everything, but the "bravery" of responding in game to someone in that manner is mostly just childish, silly and downright stupid. It would be alright if it was just one character, but it is a major phenomena, probably because they know it will have no consequences. One more reason why trying to portrait a serious evil character is pointless, it won't work in a world without fear and consequence. The moment a paladin went up to me and started out on me like a swearing southpark brat, I knew for sure that my character would never work.

But nothing ooc should hinder anything ic. Perhaps thats a better way of saying what i mean. Grymia wrote: There's a point though where if the player can't help the fact they are dyslexic and struggle with typos fairly often, there's only so much that it can be fairly considered ICly... Infact what he said. What if a summon attacks you for somone setting hostile just in case pvp may occur? Or a player typing so fast so much i can't get a word in edge ways due to ooc problems? and if they carry on ic and rp your character is ignoring them even though your still reading their "speech"? And a favourite, lag and "bump" into someone which they go mad at. All examples of how ooc should not influence ic consequences in my eyes. Thats just my thoughts. wiggedi2 wrote: They are always trying to be witty, unable to act things out and instead making a joke out of everything, but the "bravery" of responding in game to someone in that manner is mostly just childish, silly and downright stupid. The moment a paladin went up to me and started out on me like a swearing southpark brat, I knew for sure that my character would never work. O.o Well that's just stupid. And not on your end, I mean. I get what you mean now, and yeah that's just silly. And by silly I mean, well I think you know what I mean :/ I have a char that is more of a jaded warrior when it comes to death, true. I also have a char, my cleric Salema, that has been known to freak out upon being brought back from death. Sometimes she can handle it, others she cannot. I suppose that's way out of the norm? D: As a side note, I like properly RPing being resurrected. It's a fun short bit of RP. Tyrus, my 'jadded one', usually recovers quickly because he likely knew death was possible in what he was doing (epic hunting with someone, or soloing flayers, etc). Salema takes longer more often than not, and usually needs to be 'calmed down', etc

I think the first posts of the topic already hit the nail on the head, namely believable characters. Some people say that realism has no part in a fantasy setting, but I believe the exact opposite. It is a fantastical world and should be a believable world, and realistic by it's own standards. The more people play their characters as believable beings of that setting with their strengths and flaws, the more the world becomes something that seems real. Such characters allow one to see, taste, smell and feel the world. If I can not immerse myself in the world and atmosphere, then I dare say I will quickly get bored.
I try to steer for that with Robert. There are a few things I strictly avoid with him.
OOC knowledge =/= IC knowledge: He does not know the setting and events objectively, but subjectively from his own experience. For instance he does not truly belief in the existance of Ao. He does not know the detailed history of the Netheril Empire, but the myths that were spun around it, believing what he believes is true (even if it is untrue). Arrest the wrong person if your character believes it is him, while you, the player, knows better.
IRL views =/= character views: He does not share my own thoughts on politics and morals. He is a conservative and monarchist. Far more lenient and tolerant than others of similar nature, but very contradictory to what I think. He was taught his set of morals since he was a child and that greatly formed him in his set of ideas.
The character is not the hero: Robert is not the main narrative of Amia. He is a side piece that is involved in some of the story. He is there to enrich the tale that all of the community forms. If his part ends in it like Sharina or Aluziria, then he will die, regardless if I would still enjoy to continue the character. He is not the beloved center of the tale, and hence should have his flaws, prejudices and weaknesses.
Bravery and success: Bravery does not stem out of the absence of fear, but the overcoming of fear. If my character does not have fear, can not be intimated, can not die, can not fail because I ooc ensure it or steer away from it, then he is boring and bland and unreal. For me such a character is simply not enjoyable. In other words if his bravery stems out of ooc knowlege, and not from ic, then it is rather meaningless for the tale.
I remember when all of the above was not part of my roleplay. Some of this only incorporated itself in my roleplay more dominantly in the past months. If I look back at my first character on amia that was made around December 2004 I would have likely have rolled by eyes at him and cringed at the same time. Bad grammar, bad english, drow lothite with celestial and tiefling blood, smug, fearless, idiotic. A big part of quality rp (and I do not think I rank near the best of the players on this server) is the ability to inspire others to better their rp and enjoy it. It was IronAngel for instance who helped me perma-kill my lothite matron, by taking over his house by killing of his. Infernal, Tutteri and Gaga who introduced me to the kelemvorite rp and the less ooc dominated character concept, and so forth.

These questions don't really reflect the same attitude to me at all except the last. First is simply mechanical, second carries vastly different consequences. You're implying stupidity to a point. The last, your "favourite" scenario is the only very similar one and is something that I -completely- react ICly to. Why the hell not? So it may start a fight because of lag? In the real world, sometimes you accidentally hit people and it may start a fight. I just think it's awesome when that happens. I wonder if Silent gets as annoyed by people saying "// sorry didn't hit you that was lag" as he does about those correcting simple (and nothing nearly like someone who writes a sentence you literally can't understand) typos. Kraniumbrud wrote: stay ic and forget rl politics Sometimes it's interesting to take a controversial topic into the game and create good discussion ICly about it. After all, Yossarin's Commonwealth is modeled after many a government of the real world. He even admits to most of his NPCs having creative names after real life folks. He could make up a whole new, imaginary and full self-stylized people (I think he has a wonderfully large imagination), but for some people this is fun. ...just because you suffer for it, you're complaining. Instead of saying they shouldn't take OOC to the IC (if it's not something personal), maybe you shouldn't take the IC into the OOC (and make it personal). Just my 2 cents. Really, I'm not trying to bitch here. I'm just trying to show you what I was shown and introduced to by others. I'm not claiming superiority, but only claiming I don't see the consequences you're implying and I'm not sure you've thought it all out. I've found that questioning standards of RP (my own standards -- and changing them sometimes) have set me up for a happier attitude and 10 times more fun, so I try to help others find that same improved quality.

IT HURTS TO DIE.

Yup, exactly. I feel there should at least be -something- RPed when you come back to life. Tyrus may be jaded and not freak out, but I at least emote him coming back, though he's calmer about it (and more angry at himself for dying).

People who nitpick typos are daft. Most of the time my fingers type quicker than my brain, and every line has a typo, but the jist is there. If i write, im usually perfect, typing, another matter.
