If I cast Silence on myself, then run up and start smaking around a spell-caster, does the caster get a SR check / save for the 'silence' effect, or is he/she now forced to cast non-verbal / silenced spells?

The spell has a radius of 5 meters (I believe) listed in the 'Area of Effect', so I wasn't sure...

It's either drow or Strongheart halfling (and any other +2 ECL I'm missing). He listed only 28 levels and said he was evil.

SILENCE.

Its why I take Silent spell on my Melee clerics and Bards(occasionally). Whole line of buffs that I can cast on myself after I've hit myself with extended silence. Good for smacking down Rogues, Negating the Sonic component of damage from weapons, killing of Curse song etc etc.

I'll stop favouring Sonic Traps when I actually see a monster/PC use Silence that way. :P

Same here.

Though kudos to Moshie for using Silent Spell as more than a spellbook-thickener.

Funniest PvP I've been in was with Ray Rodgers on my pure Bard. I cast Silence then Wounding Whispers etc

HE couldn't curse me and struggled to hit me, I had trouble hitting him. He hit when I was on 6 HP and killed himself on my Whispers whilst dropping me.

Its also how I run my Rogue.

Mindblank
+ Trap Nest
+ Silent Scroll
+ ??? (where the first ? Is standing in the middle of your traps, the second ? Is laughing as the gullible AI or player follows you in and the third ? is when you go fuckshit because you forgot to do step one)
=
Profit.

Well the spell is useless as an offensive spell against the target audience of spell casters because its only level 2 and is cock blocked by just about everything defensive.

The scroll only gives you what.. three rounds of silence? Unless it is a spell, I don't see the grand benefits, since you have to cast it over and over.

18 seconds of silence is long enough to avoid curses, shave of 5 x d6 x 3 worth of sonic weapon damage, and lure folk into your nest of traps. People say the same thing about true-strike and yet its the contingency plan used by most non-magical meleers.

I meant the feat Silent Spell. Most folk just used it to get a spell at a higher slot. Even though for most arcane classes I say go ahead and grad Still instead. Supposed that's the opposite for divine classes though, as Still wouldn't do jack squat for them.

Nice tactic with the Silence, though. Takes some bawls. Like hell you'll catch any caster actually using that spell on himself unless he has the feat.

If anyone decides to switch to a lvl 40 arena server this is one of the keys for a really fun support build, lvl 19 sorc/20bard/1 paladin. You get sooo many spells and good tools. Mordenkainen, interposing hand + curse song, silence. You can counter mages forever + taunting them for spellfailure, or just harrass with silence aura. taunt +interposing hand+curse song the rest while buffing your own party with ac song, imp invis etc.

The tactics are just limitless with it (kinda).

My number one favourite NWN build.... I'd give a.. Home made lunchbox to be able to build it on this server. :S

This may not belong here...but it's where I'm going to ask:

The Blackguard version of Divine Favor (and really any of the modified feat/spells); is it 1 cast per day?

NWN takes the highest companion level. IF you have a 13 wwizard/17 sroceror, your familiar will be level 17. IF you have a 29 druid/1 ranger, i t will be level 29.

Yes, you can, and it will take the highest of each companion type's level for each one.

A 15 wizard/5 sorceror/10 druid will have a level 15 familiar and a level 10 animal companion.

Yes, you can. They don't interfere with one another.

Other server with my druid(who had 1 sorc), had panther familiar, panther companion, summoned panther, empathy-dominated panther, and turned into panther shape. Just a roving pack of panthers running over the server. ^^

I'm looking to make a ranger and I've never played one in the long 5 year history of my playing of NWN. Any tips/tricks/suggestions? I can likely work out a build on my own without help, but I'm just wondering if there's anything I need to know.

Okay. As you'll notice, I'm missing a few things on this, namely the ability to make Dev Crit and the 14 Wisdom required for Ranger spells. What needs to be altered to get both of those here? I'm not sold on the weapon, but it seems interesting to use. I'm also uncertain of what favored enemies to take and what order to take them in.

Quote:
Strength: 17 (19)
Dexterity: 12
Constitution: 12
Wisdom: 13
Intelligence: 12 (10)
Charisma: 08

Ranger 2:
Ranger 3: Iron Will
Ranger 4: Strength+1
Ranger 5: Favored Enemy

Ranger 9: Cleave
Ranger 10: Favored Enemy

Ranger 12:
Ranger 13: Great Cleave
Ranger 14: Strength+1

Got two questions regards a melee cleric build I'm stewing over.
It's gonna be some variation of CL 15 COT 15, CL 15 COT 10 F 5, though I might play with WM in there too.
domains war and good.
It's mostly for PVM, I do very very little PVP.
Given that I want a melee cleric, I can't see a major advantage of taking cleric higher than 15. Sure, I know about the increases to domain powers and powers from prayers...but I'm prepared to turn my back on them for more melee levels and feats. If anyone can give me a reason to take Cleric higher, I'd be interested to hear it.

My main question is should I ignore completely offensive spell casting? The CL COT F build gives loads of feats and the possibility of taking GSF in evocation. However, the builds relatively low wisdowm (18) mean the DCs for word of faith and hammer of the gods would be only 24 and 27, up to 28 and 31 with GSF. These seems to be fairly poor to me. Coupled with the lack of spell penetration. So I'm considering ignoring offensive spell-casting altogether and concentrating on the melee side, which is what I want the build to be about, anyway. And is also why I'm not taking cleric to 21 lvl and getting hellball. My question is, from your experience, am I right, with these DC's, to ignore offensive spell-casting?

Thanks, in advance

Better melee clerics have more levels of cleric.

Steal Rikku's build 23 cleric 6 cot, 1 rogue.

Take more cleric.

1. You're buffs last longer especially the round/level beauties e.g battletide, AoV should you take that domain etc.
2. You are nothing without your buffs
3. More spell slots for said buffs
4. You may actually have a spell slot or two left over to buff any companions you may decide to roll with.
5. Notice how I only said buffs, don't bother going for any offensive magic really. Critters will save. Those DC's are alright for a shifter who can spam those powers twice a round, every round if need be but as a one off shot...nahhhh.
6. Higher level summon to accompany you (mummy dust for the win, or death domain had that been one of your domain choices).
7. You will be harder to dispell.
8. I personally avoid weapon master for melee clerics. Those feat requirements are painful early on and you lose a full 7 levels, harder to access tumble etc.

Note - you may wanna slip a level of rogue in there for UMD and tumble. 6AC is just too good to say no to. Unless, it goes against what you have in mind...

Thanks for that. So definitely no offensive spells then.
Will consider your points regards the length of buffs and spell slots. I'm kind of fifty fifty on that. I have an improvised and knocked together CL WM F dwarf which I only took to 25 lvl. She has 17 levels of Cleric and after lvl 15 she never really had a problem with buffing herself in terms of spell slots and length of buff. True she couldn't buff her party :) but then my middle name is selfish. And I seem to remember being dispelled of buffs down in the Abyss.
It was a completely improvised backwards build (no CHA or Div might/shield) but she was still awesome in PVM and great fun to dungeon crawl. I guess it just goes to show, you can't screw up a cleric build :)
Anyway, I put her to bed for IC reasons and decided to actually try to plan her replacement. I'm more of a half-power builder than a powerbuilder. It's true the WM takes up a damn load of feats and if I was ruthless i wouldn't even consider it, but the damage the dwarf was getting was such fun, and I so rarely PVP in any case, I'm still toying with WM somwhere in the mix.

Anyway, I'll bear in mind what you've said. and thanks for the replies

The character will obviously use str-boosting gear, con-boosting gear, and dex-boosting gear to utilize leather armor. I fail to see how what gear I plan to use means anything, unless you are thinking of UMD, in which case, you're probably suggesting I take Rogue instead of HS. I won't do that because I'd lose an epic feat.

I also fail to see how what gear I plan to use has anything to do with how I'm two feats short and the only thing I can think of dropping are both Weapon Spec feats.

Take epic prowess as your Ranger bonus feat, and this will free up a feat to take dev crit. Furthermore, drop the other ranger bonus feat of favored enemy and take it with epic weapon focus, this frees up you to take epic skill focus spot as a general feat.

This lets you take rogue or bard as your tumble dump, giving you umd. And it frees up 2 pre-epic feats for better shit.

Drop your dex to 8, boost int to 14 and wis to 14. No use in having 12 dex, wont do crap for you. You will be using plate and the dual wield gloves.

-Epic Prowess is taken on the level 23 Ranger bonus feat.
-If I take EWF on a Ranger bonus feat, such as Ranger 20, and swap my level 21 feat for ESF: Spot, all that does is shuffle things around and give me either one less epic feat or Favored Enemy on my Harper Scout level.
-I'll agree that Iron Will could be better spent on something else, but Alertness is a pretty good feat for a spotting ranger.

Drop your dex to 8, boost int to 14 and wis to 14. No use in having 12 dex, wont do crap for you. You will be using plate and the dual wield gloves.

-Dropping Dex to 8 on a wood elf (my fault for not clarifying) is impossible, though I am not deadset on the race.
-As for armor, I was under the impression that the best ranger armor was leather, but I have not seen it for myself.

Touche. The one class I've never looked at.

I also fail to see how what gear I plan to use has anything to do with how I'm two feats short and the only thing I can think of dropping are both Weapon Spec feats.

As the other ranger experts have said, STR build = full-plate = negated dual-wield.
What gear you plan to use is important because it can determine what to compensate for.
The 8 DEX suggestion is based on the assumption you use sun soul boots and plate + cat's grace.

The best ranger armour is arguably this, but you need access to the druid shop for that.

Weapon choice is also a point considering you're using one weapon instead of two.
That means you lose up to 4 mythal powers on the off hand weapon.
The is only one good 2 bladed sword I know of the the module: +4 lootbin drop that give 1d6 positive/1d6 negative

Considering you have no tower shield, no armour skin, no access to sun soul boots, you're running with around AC 40+ at max level. I think you'll be copping a lot, if not all of the PvM flak since enemies can read your AC. Bear in mind, the high epic areas are balanced according to AC 50.
