I like the notion of not running everywhere really. It's realistic though I'm not sure how to possibly implement that. It also kind of would detract from the player base with little patience.
It would be neato keen if there were a fatigue effect for running all the time. -1 STR, -1 DEX, or -1 CON... or some combination there of pending on amount of time running over a given time period?
Probably a nightmare to implement, but hey, anyone can dream.
Not to forget a pain when hunting, especially when the fighters and barbs can keep running when everyone else needs to stop. Remember that it's a game first and foremost ... we need to be careful about increasing realism at the cost of decreasing fun.
I was under the impression that a great many of the recent changes in the server be it spell wise, class wise or race wise were to enhance the realism of it but I could be wrong. One of the most recent changes being the fountains. If it stands to reason that a fountain will not have ever-flowing waters of Jeee-zus! then just a fraction of fatigue now and then doesn't seem horribly unreasonable.
Mostly it was simply a thought of increasing RP chances and interactions by slowing a few Speedy Gonzalez down so others actually get a chance to reply to something said. Not running while not hunting would imply that there would be no incurred con/str detriment when someone actually did go hunting. Walk when not hunting/adventuring, run while hunting/adventuring.
As for the typing = DC reward, if only IC text and nothing OOC, in tells or in pchat is counted towards the word count...the ways to abuse it does drop. Also DMs will often reward DCs to people that they find RPing just to themselves with no one around. How is it different if someone wants to have a chatty RP session of baking as opposed to silently gathering all the materials and producing the bread?
What if they've finished a session of adventuring and are tending to their wounds while having a self-dialogue about what they just did? The impression given in another thread suggests that a DM happening by would reward that.
The idea was just to encourage more RP and reward the RP that happens, even the little blips here and there. If people can see they are rewarded for even their solo, in the dark, "My PC is praying fervently to their god or having an introspective moment" why not reward them on top of the joy they must be getting for doing a soliloquy right then?
A specific condition for what would count towards the word count would exist of course since most people would be buried in DCs if we ever included Tells and PChat in that counting! Hah! Though it would also make one cautious about emotes in that frame. Still, I can't see someone simply typing a full wall of gibberish for the sake of DCs. For that one...a penalty on anyone caught doing that should be DC deduction.
Not saying it would be, but man I'd say it was poetic justice there.

Oh, I'm just restating what I believed your point to be without judging it ... those with problems building (like mineself) can go to the build topic for help.
I will say, though, that felt pressured into making a cheese build for my drow and have regretted it since.
Edit: Someone posted before me

We are playing heroes, so I don't think it's much to ask that we be able to run on command unless we wish not to run.
Getting XP for written words, iirc, requires a lot of scripts that are rather lagalicious when implemented on a server with as many players as we maintain.

Yes and no. Bree'nye has been a major player in Ultrinnan for a while now and, while being a solid build, would probably get her butt handed to her in PvP by a significant portion of Ultrinnan. The way that Ultrinnan is set up makes it just as possible for a strong RP'er to gain power as a powerbuild. Look at #'s old character Malice. She was nasty, nobody would mess with her and it took him over a year (iirc) to get her to epic levels.
"Survival of the fittest" =/= "Survival of the most physically powerful"

I wasn't saying Ultrinnan is 100% survival of the fittest either I know none of my the characters I've made would stand much of a chance against most people in Ultrinnan, and yet I think I've done fairly well ... all through RP.

that is a load brosef. Fact is its not your physical strength, but your cunning that will always win the day in drow culture. you can have the weakest bastard out there completely pwn in rp another opponent and ive seen it done on more than one occasion.
Playing a drow is not beefing up to pwn everyone. Its using every capability from your mind, body, and much much more to take out your enemies.

Oh I am not saying that physical strength is the be all end all. My origional build for isen was TERRIBLE, but it got me to almost the rank I had today. However, I hit a wall that I just couldnt pass without being able to throw down with the big boys. I agree, RP is the most important, but sometimes you need some bite behind your bark.
Nowadays, I dont typically have to display Isen's prowess, which is good because im rebuild to remove some cheese from his build and I'm a lower level, but I've had to in the past.

i think some of the older players should stop blaming dms and everybody else and take some responsibility, i have seen some posts here from some of the exact people i stoped playing my drow because of.
some older players get bored, leave, are busy ect, all the new players have tried drow and went, nup screw that. anyways, disco hit the nail right on the head with his points.

I know I'm just trolling and my opinion is probably unnecessary.. but you get it!
While PVP abilities can arguable help more in evil drow world than the world above (though they inevitably help in both), they are not what solely gives one power. Part of the fun is figuring out the other ways to get power (if you're bad/uninterested in PVP)!
There are a myriad of legitimate reasons to either want to make one or not make one, but don't live a life of misconceptions: The Lolthite drow world is not solely based on PVP!

*sigh* Another one of these? Alright, sorry the Amian drow experience wasn't too your liking and you feel that the RP of several of the "experienced" drow players was too harsh.
I can't speak for any other player out there on the server, but I, for one, take full responsibility for my actions and don't blame a single person, DM or otherwise, for anything that happens on Amia. Most of the issues that people have aired out as things that they feel are wrong with the drow are issues that have been brought up not a few times, but dozens of times in my career here on Amia as a drow.
Yes, drow are mean, cold, heartless bastards. That's why we play them. However, the players behind these characters are in general some of the nicest players on Amia. There has to be a seperation between OOC and IC when playing a drow. If a person is not capable of realizing that what the character being mean is not a personal attack on you as a player and is only what that character would do..... well, then drow probably isn't for that person.
After seeing people make a new character and come down to Ultrinnan and think that they can tell a yath'taller or a matron to bugger off and then get mad when their character gets smacked for it and start a thread or post somewhere about how drow players are so mean and we suck so much.... I take any complaint about the drow playerbase with as much salt as the DM's do when someone complains about them.
Switching gears....

Correct. The last time I engaged in PvP with Bree was a long, long time ago and that was against some surfacers. In fact, I think I've only had to PvP another drow perhaps 5 times in the years I've been here. I can see it being a part of the RP for people in the MM or Spider Guard, but in so far as the Temple or the general politics of Ultrinnan are concerned, it's pretty rare actually. There's really not that much incentive to PvP another character. If you kill them, they'll just be back in a few minutes.

all the current attention on drow has made me interested in trying one. If one of the drow houses wouldn't mind taking on a new drow player, i would love to be able to have a bit of history for my character, so he's not just a nameless drow from no discernible house wandering aimlessly through the city. And i much prefer having my characters belong to something in the greater sense, it tends to keep things more interesting, and by extension keeps me interested in the character
edit: just wanted to make it clear that i dont mind harsh, harsh can be really fun. After reading the lore i think i have a good idea what its gonna be like for a male drow, so dont baby me

Actually, most of the fun in playing a drow is being houseless, prove how good your character is and be as bold as to choose which of the houses inviting you is worthy of your presence.
Not that it happened to me.
But my drow was houseless for a long time.
The only downside to being houseless is that many times I would be left out of most RP going on.
But!
Given the "friends" my character had, I was hardly out of the loop.

i didnt find the rp harshe at all, i knew fully what to expect of playing a drow and had a lot of fun doing so, i DID have a problem with alot of the older drow players attitudes ooc wise, i didnt no much to begin with at first, but i learnt fast, something you had to do with the hounding of other players.
i think your right about there being needed seperation from ic and ooc, but in the complete opposite way, just because your character is a bitch, theres no need to be one oocly.
at any rate, i believe if some of the older and more experianced players had a little more time for beginner drow players then more people will create, and actualy use them.
The only downside to being houseless is that many times I would be left out of most RP going on.
thats what im hoping to avoid, i'll end up getting bored with the character very quickly. If i get bored with a character ill just stop playing them for characters that have more stuff going on

With the DM house gone, it might be fun to get back involved in drow politics. What timezone are you on, numbers? I never seem to see you online Euro evening times.
I have a sexy bard jalil that might be interesting in joining a new house.

Exams + Laziness = Little time for Amia.
Though my interest in actually returning to consistent Amiaing is increasing. So hopefully after exams I'll enter some state of activity. xD
I've never maxxed a character, I've never had a powerbuild I've played through.
I was the Ulath'tallar, started a war, and never PvPed another drow.
*snicker* You guys Use your heads.
Now this player understands (how & what to do) to play a Drow !
Yes! In fact the most powerful individual, so i have heard of, from a server where players RP Drow - is level 10 ! LOL
Get it, everyone?
Heck, I nominate this player and Yossarin (spelling? sory!) to me the individuals to "seed" Drow RP !!
AND Drow RP can NEVER be harh enough to actualy be "realistic" - BUT, it is important, as i had said before, to come up with a way to do it - to have some sort of "RP finesse" that it is fun RP
This is somewhat rare, unfortunately..
Also - though we all should know this! - keep in mind, a Yath is not stupid, and she would herself or her retainers out to seek who she can add to her service - whoever she finds who can be useful (or made or forced to be, lol) to her...
Of course, this is just oen way to play Drow - but it is, as far as i can tell - part of the "right way" to make it "realistic" ...
The fact is, lots of players will say "but i have done this for X years!! I know how to play Drow!!" but are - based on the "take" i have gleaned from the novels of Salvatore - wrong..
AND, lots of players will come, becomes abosed, but in a proper RP context, and then complain about how it is too harsh..
And, I say that they are right - and that they are nore "Drow material" and should go back to the surface, or to some oether server where they can play their "Drow" consept of "happy-go-lucky" or be Ellistreean, ro whatever...
For myself, i like the "pure Drow RP" from the premise of the LOlthian-Drow concept that I found to be in the books i have read...
this is not right for everyone, because they are not ready or are too nice to play this way...
Well, i think im sort of "drolling on a rant" - but i think people get the point ...
Where this "fits" in the original topic of "where are all the Drow" is that i think some particular avenue of "what is Drow" should be chosen, and then must be adhered to...
I, for one, am and adherent to sticking to the the particular "RP style" that i found in the books i'd read.. (WotSQ, The Lady Penitent, etc)...
Also, one further thing - "Menzoberranzanean'Lolthithe-Drow" role-play IS just one possible concept ! ....
I mean, i am taking it for granted that Ultrinn IS MEnzoberranzanian... but it may be - or be made to become - like one of the other citoes, such as the one where a council of male mages name up of the heads of (nine of them if i recal ?) mage guilds rule their city - Lolthites having been overpowered in that city's past... other possible citeis to "model after" as well such as that oent hat was split between Ghaunadarrians and - i think that Masked guy and then Lolthites?
However, i think the geater attraction to Drow RP is the Menzo concept.. posibly, the B-mia city might be that other cty? made even have the option for a player to start their "other then Lolthian" concept there??
SO, if bother places are made t "fit" the "two" variations, that might satisfy almost everyone - the LOlthite pursists on Ultrin, and the rest of the heretics (lol) in the other place..
Yes, i know tht there are probably next to no players at al, at this point - but im talking about the RP beginnings of what might be satisfying to prospective players who want to "have their cake and eat it too!"
Well, lol - imlate to work, and i might have not said all this properly, but i thin a careful reader will "get it" !
