Ah, I stand corrected then. I was of the belief that ranger spells = nature deity.

Na, not that they don't require a deity, just that they don't require a nature or ranger based deity (Silvanus, Chauntea, Talos, Mielikki, Gwaeron Windstrom, etc.).
Mystra's order is a good example of that. As is Shaundakul's.

A question on this point. I found the following quote in the Toolset and was wondering if there's any lore to it in FR.
"The members of the Order of the Dark Maiden are devoted to the service of the Drow goddess Eilistraee. The monks of the Order promote peace and harmony between the Drow race and the races of the surface world, but will repond to evil with swift and deadly action."

No hits on Google, and nothing in any of the god books that I've seen. I seriously doubt WotC would add anything like that.
But it's possible to start such an order. Or to invent some tiny order with a few NPCs as a PC background, I guess. Any deity can have monks, many deity have monks, and some have documented monastic orders. Just because it isn't documented doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and more importantly, that it couldn't exist.

House Rowa
While the Qu'ellar of Rowa was closed officially, a move is now being made to re-open our arms and doors to any who would seek solace in the Dark Maiden's embrace.
Those who feel they have no other place, no hope upon the isle, come and speak of Her. A home is available for all in Endir's Point. Simply come and speak to Elrien Rowa or Nalfein Rowa for more information.
Those merely seeking information are also always welcome. Healing services provided as needed in accordance with Salandran training. Strength In Unity, Trust In Faith

Of course it doesn't.
Never mind that they've lived there for almost 2 years IRL, with a DM who knew about it, /now/ it's an issue. I love it.

Heh I thought they lived in Amia Forest since that is where I always see them and never saw them on Abroad which is where I spent 90 percent of the past 2 years.

We play in the Forest because that's where people are. Few ever go to Endir's, so we go to them.
However, snark noted.

Mosh and Tormak, stop it. I don't care if you write a short and snarky comment answering a short and typo-riddled post, but if somebody puts a lot of effort in making a nice picture (or a serious bit of prose) then you should at least have the courtesy to mirror that effort in your remarks.
This type of effort is what we want on our server, even if we don't agree with the content.
Thanks.

Allow me to rephrase.
I wanted to make a place for people who are OOCly or ICly (or both) refused entry in the Shrine. If you want to snark and make smartass little comments about it, go ahead. I was doing it for others, and myself, because I know, oh so well, the frustration that stems from things utterly beyond your control in the OOC affecting the IC on a server where you need RP and a DM approval to /fart/. Being told "Yeah, we don't like YOU, and so your characters are not allowed in. and no, we don't need to give IC reasons." is a pain in the ass, even if it ISN'T against the rules, and I /don't/ want that to happen to anyone else. So, I made a place where that won't happen. However, since that's now being blocked as well, fuck it. Consider them gone. I've spent the better part of two years trying to convince a bunch of people I DON'T KNOW that /I/, Cat, am really not such a bad person, because apparently that matters ON AN RP SERVER. I can't keep doing it anymore. You want your single-group system, you've got it. Do not step outside the norm, do not try to change the status quo. Whatever. I should not be emotionally exhausted from dealing with a /game/, and I'm not going to. Of /four/ servers I play on, this is the only one where I have this issue, which tells me something.
It tells me I am going to go back to playing with my husband and the one or two other people that are awesome enough to play with me here, and when I want actual meaningful, server-affecting RP, I'll go to one of the other servers for it. You're all entitled to your opinion of me, and I just...am tired, soul-deep exhausted, of trying to change it. If you think I'm an evil, stupid bitch, fine. Think that. It won't change me, even a little, and in the end, it's your loss, not mine. I have the approval of the only person on this server whose opinion /does/ matter to me.
I'll be playing if anyone needs me. I'm through trying to do anything positive for anyone else, I'm just going to play for me, and him now.

Anyway, to try to drag the topic back onto the rails... This is great info, Gers, thanks much; and as someone who wasn't on the server in 2009 when it was originally posted, thanks to whoever bumped it, too. I'm not really playing an Eilie at the moment, but I'm wondering, do players of drow clerics think that adequate attention is paid to this part: Gers wrote: Strangers are your friends. ... So long as the drow met with are not working evil on others, they are to be aided and given the message of Eilistraee. I've spent a lot of time in the forest, and seen a lot of drow hanging around who claim to be neither Lolthites nor Eilistraeeans (no less than four of them in the past day, even). I think the number of times that I've seen any Eilie make any effort to convert these wayward drow has been precisely 1. It seems like the common attitude among the Eilies is that as long as a drow is vaguely good-aligned and not openly worshipping Lolth, then their job is done. For a religion that seems so fundamentally based on evangelism, I think some potentially awesome RP has possibly been overlooked. Unless it happens all the time, and I'm just coincidentally never around to witness it.

I can answer that. While Eilistraeens would /prefer/ that goodly Drow turn to the Maiden, they won't press the issue if their message is turned away. If we tried to force a conversion, that would create resentment and possibly lead to the drow being evil again. Forcing a conversion is for Lolthites. As long as they don't go evil, we let them go about their way. We do bring about healthy reminders to those who haven't chosen a path yet, though.

My character is human and he whips out his amulet of Eillistraee all the time. He'll talk to drow or anyone else about it too. I won't demean your point though, there is a relatively untapped source of RP.

To me, that sounds to me like the proper attitude for a lay worshiper, not a cleric, dontcha think? I mean, for a faith that's not necessarily into proselytizing (like, say, Grumbar or something) that would be no problem, but Eilistraee teaches that her faith is the drow's pathway to salvation, right? (And yes, I realize that this all sounds very Jesus-y. That's not my fault; you can blame Ed Greenwood for that. )

Why would they heavily proselytise? That may have helped Christianity spread from a bunch of Jewish dissidents to the dominant religion in Europe, but it wasn't really how the matter was approached in a polytheistic society afaik.

Yurell, Eilistraee's Dogma includes encouraging the spreading of her message.
Admittedly, it doesn't quite say to what extent, but it says to spread her message.

There's a difference between 'spreading' a faith, and pressing the issue once you're already told to (naughty word) off. Admittedly it all comes down to each individual's interpretation of their god's desires.

To be fair, that's more of the general Amia Shrine of Eilistraee consensus. It's a valid interpretation and approach to the Eilistraeen faith, but so is Lizzie's. Lizzie does make a good point about Clerics too. Clerics, generally, are the converters and preachers of the faith and do what they can to try tell the world of their lord. Again, that's generally speaking. In my experience on Amia, there haven't been many Clerics who took the approach Lizzie is talking about that I've seen -- I don't speak about Eilistraeens alone here either, but all faiths. Most are the more non-converting types. That's fine and all, but I do think it would make Amia a more interesting place if a few more Clerics took to being more aggressive in converting others to their faith. When I played my Eilistraeen regularly, I took more of a middle ground, a bit like the rest of the shrine. A part of Tu'jol's being though, was always to bring up Eilistraee in subtle and not so subtle ways in conversation so that those talking with her would learn about her goddess. That there is something I do see a little more than the more aggressive converting. There are all different types of ways to convert and inform. Choose your weapon and enjoy, I say!

DMs acknowledging you doesn't change that the town is uncomfortable with your presence and with Drow having the gall to try to turn their humble little retreat into shrine 2.0. The town is probably fairly uncomfortable with the type of crowd that Ralten's Band draws, as well.

The town naturally has it's own opinion and reaction to a house full of Eilistraeens (not all of them drow and indeed one house, as in a physical single building), which is logical and acceptable. They surely also have their views about Horsemen, Ralten's Band and the House Rowa trying to protect and patrol the town's surroundings. All of this is logical. However, if there's a problem and if the town disagrees, I'd love the time and effort put into this to lead into at least some RP about it with the town and the house. I think effort and RP leading to at least RP, not just a one-sentence forum reply is pretty fair. That being said, and if I knew how to add a second quote, the subject should propably be separated from this thread. It's barely relevant and not what most people try to find when reading about playing an Eilistraeen.

Welp, it's been a year and a half, Tormak.
Any old time you want to send that "RP" our way, you go right ahead. Until then, I don't think me calling a spade a spade is a great leap of logic.
And Disco, with all due respect, trying to talk privately does -nothing- and gets nowhere. Why is it this can be made public on me, but I can't respond in kind? It's hardly drama. I'm done with trying to be a part of a community that has very bluntly stopped /every/ move I've made, IC or OOC. I'm not going to waste my time attacking; neither the game nor the people are worth my anger and frustration anymore. I did my damndest, and if I have to throw up my hands and walk away, so be it, but I can do it knowing I tried everything I could, and at least in that find a measure of contentment.
If I come here just to RP with Khy and Guano, that's just fine by me. We have fun.

I simply want a nice forum, and I think that's best done when we (as in players and staff) are for instance forthcoming by honouring a poster's effort but also know when to stop bashing somebody's head in with THE POINT.
Anyway, that's the last I want to read of this here. Continue with the topic.

Thanks Gers, now I know what an Elistraeen is! Or rather should be!
I dunno how others feel about it, but I often hesitate to make a new character, as I always want a lore base but I ain no FR/PnP pro an ain got no books n'stuff, which is why I'm always VERY grateful when I can look it up directly on this forum so I don't embarass myself -too much- in game!
For that a big <3 for Gers!

No problem . If anyone wants more extensive info, all you've got to do is ask. Keep in mind though that Amia Eilis diverge a little from the "norm," you might say. Like I said before, the stuff I wrote is designed as guidelines, not set-in-stone rules. As for things like nudity, which a few have asked about both ICly and OOCly, I've always viewed it like this: The reason Eilistraeen often perform rituals nude, including High Hunts, is twofold. Firstly, they are not ashamed to show themselves for what they are; in such rituals, they do not cloak themselves in clothing with the idea of hiding their heritage. In doing so, they are honest with both themselves and others about their nature. One could extend that to going with little or no clothing under the sun: their skin is sensitive to it, so by making themselves suffer the pain of sunlight, they're allowing it to symbolically purge any remaining taint from the caverns below. Secondly, going without armor or clothing is a sign of their trust in the Dark Maiden's protection and beneficence. After all, for the truely faithful, what better armor than the will and power of a deity?

I can see some cases being different like Sun-Elves... but in the case of Wild-Elves and Wood-Elves nudity just isn't a big deal. It could just be the eilistraeens trying to return to their true elven roots... that's how I looked at it anyway.

Sun Elves are known for embracing their cultural heritage with as much, if not more fervour (however vain it is) as any other race. If there's nudity to make one look more like an Elf, the Sun Elves are already there.
Of course - they're not as narcissistic as I just painted them... Well. Wait. No - they are.
In any case - I look forward to Axl making known her Drow presence in Endirs' Point - Once I get my PC back up, I'd be happy to drop by.
But seriously, in terms of Eilistraeen Drow. I've been relatively happy with the quality of lore-wise RP coming out of it. There's been some stand up performances that have ultimately, no doubt inevitably, stood down ICly. Very pleased... However do not mistake that compliment for my RP getting ANY lighter on you Whore-Dancers.

Lolthite nobles actively enjoy lustful encounters with demons, slaves, men, women, spiders and even in some twisted yet secret cases, family members. Why are Eilistraeens the whore dancers?!
Seriously, been wanting to know that for awhile.

Because drow have looser morals than the humans who encounter them. When they meet the Elis, they see 'whores', and when they meet the UD drow, they tend to die and not see the looser morality.

Also, consider that the word 'whore' has a fairly specific meaning: someone whose virtue and dignity are up for sale. Lolthites believe that Eilies have sold themselves out, that they've betrayed the virtues and ideals of "drowness," in exchange for the hope of making nicey-nice with the kivvil. In that sense, calling an Eilie a whore is not just some randomly-chose mean-sounding insult. Eilies literally *are* whores, from the Lolthite perspective.

Heh, that's what Lloth did according to the Eili point of view as well. Hence Jud's nickname for her: Gruumsh's Whore

Gers wrote: <snip> Aye, those are some great points and well thought out. There are also the more obvious reasons for Eilistraeen nudity though. Eilistraee herself is depicted as dancing in the nude, under moonlight. Her faithful mimic that in order to celebrate and honor her. Also, being a goddess of beauty, the Drow form is embraced as beautiful. Drow, like Elves, hold little taboo in nudity, so to show the form is to show beauty. Natural beauty, at that. Which is something I imagine Eilistraee would hold closer to heart than any other kind of beauty, being a goddess that's close to nature.
