this is why there really was no reason to discuss it further. Anyone who plays a drow knows whats going on lately. So do the dms. To think they wouldn't be hashing out ideas or what not over this is purely moronic in thought.
You people want to make things better? Play more. Cant play more? who has any right to say shit to you. I mean seriously folks, if you cant understand that people have lives outside of this game, be it jobs, school, or hell a relationship of some kind even. Some of us have other things going on in life. Most people who know me know i went through some heavy fucking shit in the last few months and as such my time playing on amia has dwindled, because im choosing to focus on my well being before plotting. Its coming back slowly but its no where near what it has been in the past.
And another reason i myself avoid playing is the fucking drama. I play this game to have fun, not for the gossiping bull that just seems to haunt the drow playerbase. Quite frankly at times i want not to play at all because of it. People need to realize the differences between whats fiction and whats real. Keep the ic in character and the ooc bs out of the damn game. I know half of you will read this and cry foul and "oh no that never happens, we have no earthly idea what you are talking about." and those that ignore the simplest of problems are only contributing to the decline of it all.
Finally, take responsibility for what you are and for no one else. Each of us has to understand that our actions affect the rp as a whole. If people perceive you as a whiny stuck up asshat, guess what? The roleplay wont ever amount to anything over all. Do not be afraid to lose, be it permadeath, be it a plague, be it a bunch of stunty dwarf bastards pwning your drow ass. Anyone playing should accept these things as reality because lets face it, its a harsh underdark, and the weak dont survive.
This may have been blunt and rude but well it needed to be said imo.

Good one. Ultrannian is NEVER vaunrable. The number of NPC super guards, locked racial gates and super seeing servent wyrms make damn sure nobody from up top can get in. Even when you do you can't do much since honestly a group of PC's couldn't take out a city with an army, and the majority of Drow PC's hide in the houses, blocked by a racial gate.
So yea, vaunrable, but not really.

Well the first two kick me down, but the last one is basically the same as hiding in the houses. We didn't really, because to attack the city the drow would have demanded a time so they could all muster on, and then probably find that most of the drow would jump from their other characters to defend the city.
Either that, or OOC bitch fit which usually erupts whenever anyone makes hostile intentions towards ultrannian.

Yep. This was one of Auron's strongest fears, second only to his own death by the plague. That surfacers would raid Ultrinnan and kill what little "friends" he had Below. It was also his main reason to try keeping it a secret.
I am pretty sure the DMs would not have objected if one attempted something, as long as the plan was good.
Tranny himself hinted at the vulnerability when he had Vhaeraunites raid and attack the city.

Good thing as DMs, we have the ability to say those OOC bitch fits mean nothing, and march on with the IC. "No, deal with it IC."

But seriously, I think studying is a big reason for the drop as well, it even makes sense which is rare about things that come out of my mouth. Thing is... I look at the numbers right now, it's 11:23 am my time, so not the most active time of the day but... 12/65 A-mia and 5/65 B-mia... That's tiny. o.o
PS: I blame Uce! :O

Well, let's wrap this up... I limit myself to the Drow.
Q: Why aren't there more Drow playing:
1. Old players left because:
1a. There are no Drow to play with.
1b. They got into OOC fights.
1c. They are busy with other things.
1d. They are dissatisfied by DM stuff.
2. We don't attract enough new players because:
2a. Drow have a bad reputation due to 1b.
2b. Drow RP is quite demanding.
2c. Amia doesn't attract enough new players as a whole
2d. Drow are so 2008
I guess these are the main items mentioned so far. Take a look at it and see if you know a solution to one or more issues. Preferably one that's also realisitic.
What exactly was that Numbers? You told me to login with a drow PC and then you left. No wonder you don't get a drow house running.
It was 1 am, it was late, and you all live on the effing moon. At least I'm telling people to log in. What you do once you get there is nothing to do with me.
however, my yath'abban managed to get five together for a short pray and mini-sac session. Just random mini-events spawned from RP. Do that. Do that lots. All of you.
as for Disco's post. See above. Note the 1b on the quote.

And, to add something so this isn't a +1 comment, I remember back in the day, where one couldn't get on without bumping into evil drowsies who wanted to carve spider figurines out one's thighbones. It was awesome! It was kinda sad that it happened in the middle of Cordor, and all of them seemed to love the sun, but a lot of the RP I got out of it, was really quite good.
It's a lot rarer to bump into drow these days, and has been for quite a while now. A year, probably isn't completely off. I don't know if they finally just realized that meeting them up top should be rare, or if "their" playerbase just started disappearing that far back, but it sucks partially! Partially because I do want them to stay down below, so we up top actually get a tingling sensation when we see on, and not just a gut feeling that OOC drama will ensue. 'Cause it does. Constantly.
So uh.. Yeah, get people back! Then stay down below, instead of sunbathing! Huzzah?

Its about the time Cordor became no PVP, so the Drow have to FIND people first, instead of just assualting Amia's number one meeting spot for squishy topsiders.

also, possible solution that would make the server more realistic as well.. from here on out, eilistraeean/anyothergooddrow should be request only. i think drow rp as a whole has really lost its intrigue due to the majority of drow being on the surface and being treated like any other person. i havent seen much depth to the eilistraeean rp as a whole its just "yea were good, you're dumb for not knowing were good, move on" and because there are so many i dont think the lolthite players even bother interacting with them much anymore.. thats of course just my opinion and free to be flamed.

God no.
Making that a rue is tantamount to saying "You must obey the racial stereotype or a request is needed."
What about other races?
Also, AFAIK there are more Ghaunadaur drow than those who serve any other deity.

Yar. I don't even bother with Eilistraeeans, mainly because they OOC drama worse than a matron on that time of the month.

Faeries also got played genuinely badly. Drow don't have that problem. Drow in general have the problem of others treating them as just another race and not giving them enough flak for being on the surface. The goodie drow characters mostly take the role of the underdog, though it depends on the individual character of course, how they'd react.
But in general, drow don't get played badly per se. They're quite well within the canon examples, both good and evil drow. The "problem" is mostly caused by people having different opinions about what drow ought to be, putting emphasis on different parts of the canon drow lore.
Well, that just allows the bad Drow to be badder. Suck your accuser into a discussion about how you are a goodie and then sucker slash em with your kukri mid-sentence

A perfectly valid IC reaction considering on Amia you seem far more likely to encounter a god drow than an evil one.
I don't want to get further into "People play wrong," but I do question the rationalization of this matter. Racial prejudice isn't rational or valid. At best, if you make friends with the "Jew next door", he must be an exception. It takes a lot for you to review your general attitudes; you'll much sooner overlook opposite facts as an anomaly. There's a proverb in Finnish, something like: "An exception verifies the rule." Logically, it is fallacy, but it's extremely descriptive of how the human mind works.
So yeah. It's fine to behave IC how you behave IC; I'm not about to tell you it's wrong. But I do think this common OOC argumentation is poor support for such behaviour. It conflicts with how things are in the real world, the results of anthropology/social psychology, and the actual reasons for prejudice in this fantasy context are supposed to be exponentially more severe.
On an unrelated note: almost everyone gets over drow RP, sooner or later. I can name half a dozen PCs who're still active on the surface since about the time I first started on Amia, but I don't think there's a single drow PC around from that era (actively playing, that is; I suppose Gloth plays every now and then). I reckon it's because it's repetitive: it can certainly be exciting and intriguing, but Lolthite society is conservative and totalitarian at its core. There's limited room for change and evolution. Since Do'Veldran's decline, there's not a single Udos house left on Amia. Very few players and almost no characters are the same. But honestly, you wouldn't notice much different if you swapped the current houses with Vandree, Arabett, Olath'Orbb and Kor'ali; it's the same politicking, rules, limitations and set idea of what drow RP is "supposed to be."
And sure, I don't question that: drow are a very specific thing, and it's not the same if you do whatever you want with it. But it's little surprise you get tired of it sooner or later, once you realize you're going in circles, following the same pattern for the fourth time now. It's just the way it is. I had great fun with drow in my time, but by the time I quit, I'd seen it all. I'd done everything I could imagine doing, several times: been a matron, Ul'saruk, guard officer, heretic, independent, a political mover and shaker to oppose the matrons, male to an independent, consort to matrons, underdog, apprentice, archwizard, started a house or two, sacked a house or two, been in five or six, raided the surface and dealt with the surface, ad nauseum. And of course, there's the fact I became a DM, and had to deal with all the OOC drama. At that point, I realized the wary attitude of the DMs towards drow had its reasons: I, a regular and well-like drow player, got into DMing with an open mind and a broad smile, sure that Ultrinnan had many cool opportunities. It didn't take a month for stuff to blow up in my face. And it wasn't once, twice or thrice. To this day, I always give those involved a new chance if I'm to do something. I'm still not jaded about the drow. There's potential in them, still. Even if things have gone sour every time I've touched the subject over the past two and a half years.
Don't be discouraged by this, please. I don't mean it like that. I want to show that I don't have an irrational dislike for drow. I'm just pretty tired of it all, and I'd love to be given reason to change my mind. (Plot-wise, though, I just don't find that Underdark stuff very interesting anymore; I'm more a fan of classic, down-to-earth adventuring.)

I guess these are the main items mentioned so far. Take a look at it and see if you know a solution to one or more issues. Preferably one that's also realisitic.
I Got NWN, discovered that it was on-line, played Badlands, got sick of PvP / monster-spam-killing up to lvl50-something, then looked for REAL role-play... a in soemting close to Paper & Pencil FRPGing such as i had known since about 1980.
I found Amia, didn't like the "Cordor Circus of Animals" (aka "everyone is special so much so that n one is special where humans are a minority).
I did becoem acquainted with a super awesome RPer who i do occasionaly come back to visit.. wel i try to but that player is always to busy - (not a put down my dear! i know you are honestly always very busy! *hugs* )...
In the server that i did finaly find REAL role-play, i got totaly into Drow RP too!
I read 20-ish books of Salvatore, SMedman, etc - i love being able to log in and play in THAT setting !
For myself, the only Drow there can be is a Menzoberranzanean-Lolth-ite Drow! I just will not play any other ! lol I "love" being one of them them so much !
I have tried, from time-to-time to get into Amia's variation of Drow, but it just doent "fit" for me.
I have encountered a player here-and-there who i loved to RP with, and, wheni "see" that those individual players have actualy logged into AMia, i jump right on down there!
However, in the 3-4 years of this ongoing thing, i have seen those rare (imo, not meaning to knock anyone down!) players not play, or move into the server that i prefer to play in (just happen-stance, i do not think it proper to coem to Amia and say "hey you need to go to my server!")..
Well, actualy, maybe it is not "just" happenstance?
You see, the server i like to play in enfored "clasical" Menzoberranzanian'Lolth-ite RP behaviour! NO GOOD DROW Allowed {save for a extremely rare exception!} !
(i know of another server that has this position and i think it will be great, one day)
Now, the servers, in general that DO attract ppl that REALY role-play are - well ~tend~ to be (so far as i have gathered):
1. FR Setting ! Or, realy a particualar settign that a prospective player can say "oh i read those books and i want to play in them !" (Drgaon lance, and a few others are this situation - um even though DL server is not a "RP enforced" server as one liek me woudl like, it is a familiar setting - that i think is the key point)
2. EXP FROM RP !!! (maybe this should be #1? lol)
But, i keep replaying that quote in my mind from the "Field of Dreams" movie... "build it, and they will come" ...
THAT, i think is what Disco wants, yes?
as if the design itself can be made so well that ppl will flock to it!
3. See 2.b .. i have asked many many players - time and time again "come to UD" answer: "i don know...(how to pla a drow)"
So, i always have taken it upon myself - and a few other nice-minded players too! - in the other server to help as best i could !
Not give, or be nice icly at all ! ol We are after all Drow ! We ARE HARSH ! BUT, we know we can't just whip t death every new character. The trick, as ever, is to RP the abuse in such a way that veryone has fun - well this digresses, but nice Drow are notunacceptable but maybe rare in yath... anways...
well this also digreses fromthe topic. But, the server id been in rewards EXP for RP, has a good set of PvP rules that are enforced.
Realy one can't have Drow RP w/o the intrigue and so on...
Because of this, imo, Lolthian Drow RP is not for everyone!
So, my suggestion is this:
1. you cant please everyone no matter what
2. Disco, or whoever has the "say so" for "what goes" - just pick whatever variation of "what is a Drow?" for Amia that engenders the RP that you wish to see. Then, in time those people will come.
As a server on the whole suggestion:
1. enforce player to stop running! If possible a game mechanic that causes a charcter to be slowed as if overleoaded after runing X number of miles, probably dependednt on CON.
2. Zero EXP for monsters! Only gold/treasure awarded !
3. allow for exp for time played walking/talking - or what everr esle that IS roleplay ! (echoes "build it and they will come" into... "seed that, and it will grow" ).
In closing i LOVE that crafting system ! Love to get exp for soemthign logical !
REALY ! Whenver does someone say, realisticaly "hey i need to learn to fight, so ill go to the front lines and risk my life!" NEVER !! haa ha ha
Afterall what kind of idiot ever goes atraight to w/e place where there is a war and never has had training?! yes, right ! a soon to be dead one.
instead we pay real dollars (in USA) for trainers! maybe trades perseons wil be a understudy to learn acting, or whatever - put that in your game! (if you can?)
Could be alot of fun to have higher level chars mentor lower ones... maybe have to go see that monk NPC in soem mountain top to learn w/e.
But, in short...
Make exp totaly dependent on RP itself, in whatever way that you can.
And, enforce Drow Rp to be recognizeable to be Lolthian in some way. This maybe either as simple as a rethinkig of the signs or monuments' wording, or the occasional devine inervention of Ychols or w/e.
Though we all knwo this - Lolth rules th Yath by fear who inturn do the same on down. A "good" evil player knows how to influence properly by only applying a occasional random whipping - could even be for no reason at all! - inthe view of a number of charcters present (well once there are player back there? )
This RP can me motivatied by w/e Baenrae Dm or NPC - on a temporary basis, until the next oen in-line "gets it" on how to continue...
And, intrgue, murders, etc are the halmark or Drow RP - there just has to be soem sort of ground rules, player-wise (and icly) to make it happen "right" for the fun of everyone! this is the toughie! i have more ideas, but this detail is more upto the playerbase &/or DMs on how to carry this out)..
I can't help but disagree with most of your suggestions. However, I too would like to see some kind of an automated XP-for-RP system to complement hunting, DM quests and the Job System. It seems to work well on other servers.
It's not so important that you don't necessarily learn anything by talking IC. I think it's well worth it if it creates the image and illusion that your RP is encouraged and rewarded. It may not be thoroughly justified if you poke deep into it, but it's an excellent incentive and something that's sure to make new RPers feel encouraged to play Amia. I know from personal experience it's been great fun in other servers I've played, and it might be just what Amia needs. We can no longer rely on our size and wide target audience, because most players nowadays are RPers.

I like the notion of not running everywhere really. It's realistic though I'm not sure how to possibly implement that. It also kind of would detract from the player base with little patience.
Someone says hi, they wait literally two seconds and race off. Running, they are long out of ear shot of an attempt to return the greetings. If they had been walking, there is a chance that they may hear the greetings and from there RP ensues.
For the 'Everyone is so special that no one is' concept....really and truly. How many players and DMs have made similar comments over that very same thing? Wasn't there a motion or suggestion some time ago to remove the widget from Fey players who never remained in Fey form but instead RPed constantly as quick footed Elves?
Sadly it is up to each individual who accepts a race or sub race to ave at least given a cursory glance to the lore surrounding the archetype. Whether they choose to follow that lore to the letter devoutly or interpret it as they wish is up to the player.
Gentle encouragement to explore the lore of the PC they're playing would also help. Not heaping scorn because they didn't know that some rudimentary bit of lore like Corelleon's uncle twice removed -always- eats his fish with fruit.
Although in conversations with a few others, there was mention that perhaps the drive to be like a DnD pnp campaign is where the 'optimizing' ended and the 'powerbuild' began to emerge? The experience from the adventuring fight overshadowed the emotional/RP aspect?
Aestus has mentioned something in his post about a word count tracker? Something which excludes tells and party chat and possibly anything starting with "//" as a general rule but awards DCs based upon word count of a certain extent? Emotes included in that if possible so things starting with typically "[,|, :, or the more common *" get included as such?
Yes some of us aren't flowery speakers and some of us emote small neighborhoods of text, let alone a block or two. Is that even possible? It would possibly alleviate the notion of DMs only awarding what they like as RP and genuinely reward every attempt to RP. It's just a thought.

It would be neato keen if there were a fatigue effect for running all the time. -1 STR, -1 DEX, or -1 CON... or some combination there of pending on amount of time running over a given time period?
Probably a nightmare to implement, but hey, anyone can dream.

Not to forget a pain when hunting, especially when the fighters and barbs can keep running when everyone else needs to stop. Remember that it's a game first and foremost ... we need to be careful about increasing realism at the cost of decreasing fun.

A lot of times it's hard to distinguish the genuine concerns from the raging. I can't even tell what yours are anymore, honestly.
The players have basically everything they could need to make roleplaying happen. They just choose not to, and they foster an environment that undermines roleplaying. Whether it's because they're off pillaging the living daylights out of something and therefore aren't visible to be roleplayed with, or because they're right in front of you demonstrating a total lack of interest in roleplaying, it's still against roleplaying.
Even I have become part of the problem since I don't roleplay often enough anymore.
If I'm raging it's because they could do better (or at least, stop getting worse) they just decide not to.
If there is something that you can do about that, Tormak, then I'm not going to take the cynical back seat and assume that you'll fail, I'm just telling you that I have tried and failed.
Not to single you out or anything, but this post jumped out at me. Whenever I've seen you PCside on my character, you generally had your character stand within eyeshot of a group actively RPing, but too far away to make any real contact for a rather long period of time, just pacing back and forth silently, without any demonstration of an activity that another character might be interested in. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of emoting over by yourself for somebody wandering by to go, "Hey! What're you doing digging in Farmer Holvin's field with a spoon?"
Gotta give a little to get a little. That said, of course I haven't seen you every time, and this might not be your norm, but it applies to more people than just Selmak.

Although in conversations with a few others, there was mention that perhaps the drive to be like a DnD pnp campaign is where the 'optimizing' ended and the 'powerbuild' began to emerge? The experience from the adventuring fight overshadowed the emotional/RP aspect?
This. Something I've thought for a while. That Amia has focused to much on being like PnP ADnD and not enough about RP. It's quite obvious when you realise that there is a gigantic thread about powerbuilding, and that most of the issues between players stem from powerbuilding in some form. Such as characters with classes that contridict, players that prefer to hunt constantly rather then RP, and people who play the power-rp game of forcing RP by way of stat's.
May just be me, but I've never understood this drive to use dice rolls, and to rely primarly on stats for things on Amia. This isn't PnP after all, it's a video game, and the idea was to take away the dice rolls and focus on the rp, not cause people to be all about the stats and gear.

In my opinion, being frank and honest about this fact, with a single thread on the entire forum where the more helpful builders can help those who may not be so gifted... it's just evening the scales there. No one says you have to use it, or ask for our advice, but it is there and generally speaking we will help you.

*nods* I've decided to give the seeking of guidance a shot, in regards to a new possible character I am considering. (Although, there is a fair bit of RP to the fellow planned/potential, I would like to at least make him reasonably good at something)

i think the thing is that drow culture revolves around survival of the fittest, and weaklings, lorewise, will never get far. additionally, it is kind of hard to assert you are a great warrior when you are the first to die in a party, when you get struck down in pvp. You have the 'super spies' who pour points into hide and move silently, and then you have those who dump spot to trump the spies. All in all, drow seems to be more powerbuild demanding, as are most evil factions. Kind of hard to enact your evil plans if some bored paldhoom decides to solo your staging area...
