I am not sure what you expect from this topic.... but I doubt it will be what you were hoping to get.

Well, a few things that I see players who get a lot doing:
- Always in character. Avoiding going OOC even if things get heated up.
- Joining a faction to find new people to RP with. The more you RP the more likely it is that someone's going to recommend or a DM spots you.
- RPing by yourself. Might seem a bit weird, but doing stuff like regular prayers to your character's god when you're alone is something that attracts DCs.
- RPing while killing monsters. It's easy to forget this but sticking to your character while hunting, for example refusing to join evil parties if you play a paladin, attracts DCs.
Unfortunately, a big part is down to being at the right place at the right time. But the more you stick to the above guidelines, the more chances you'll have to be in the right place at the right time.

One thing a lot of people will likely tell you is to not play with the expectation of getting DCs. This is often easier said than done when you have, say, a special character that requires a DC reskinning or some plot development hinging on the creation of a DC item/spell/whatever - but in general, is along the lines of "a watched pot never boils" and you'll only be tormenting yourself focusing on the lack of DCs.
As far as how to get them? Be IC as often as possible. If you have to talk OOCly, keep it concise when in Party, or otherwise reserve it to tells. The more immersion, the more people are playing their characters and doing things which are obvious in character, the more likely it typically is that your RP may be rewarded. Plus, even if it isn't, you're less likely to be bummed you didn't get a DC because the RP itself rocked.
Don't sweat it; RP your heart out, use the DC wand when stuff is cool, then give it no more thought. If a DM sees it, they see it. If not, you're still having fun, hey?

Take heed of Nekhy's observations, then. Getting into group events (but not just as a passive bystander, actually being interested and involved) does help a lot because events and groups tend to get far more exposure even if it's fleeting, like a DM checking in to see what's up.

My advise is to be part of something larger than yourself (or your character rather). Just joining a faction isn't enough, you have to be a bit more aggressive in your role-play if that makes any sense, it's also good to try to pay attention to plots and then try to change things to fit the desires of your character. Focus on the goals of your character, and try to achieve them with role-playing.
Joining a faction and just being a tool for your faction leader is something I think is too common. You have to be a bit more ambitious if your rp style is 'aggressive', but you can also just focus on the traits your character has, and role-play that way (being a sick person and coughing all the time, being a drunken jerk, or being a friendly healer who helps people, ect).

My advice is summed up pretty easily:
Know Your Character.
Understand what your character likes and wants and believes and hopes for. Spend some time pondering things like... What hardships, insults, or consequences is she willing to endure in order to get what she wants, and what, if anything, is so offensive to her that she simply will not stand for it under any circumstances? What qualities does she admire most/least in herself, and what qualities does she admire most/least in others? Et cetera.
And, possibly most importantly, how are your character's answers to these questions different from your own answers? Playing yourself is easy, but not interesting.

Unless you consider yourself an interesting person. =P I have no problem getting DC's, and my characters each have the same core personality, even if they make very different decisions. Or maybe thats just my crutch: I cant really play a character smoothly when how they act is completely different than how I possibly could.

Getting DCs is simply luck. Before Christmas I RPed three months nearly every day for several hours, but never got any. Then I had school stuff and other things (Like the new Fallout!) and I cut down my NWN hours. Then in one month, I gained three DCs by just logging in, walking into the Kelly cathedral and said "Brothers... *nods to the X folk*" and I got a DC. Happened thrice in a row. EDIT: Nekhy wrote: - RPing by yourself. Might seem a bit weird, but doing stuff like regular prayers to your character's god when you're alone is something that attracts DCs. Don't know why, but this... This sounds dumb to me. I never typed anything when there wasn't at least another player character to see/hear it. Maybe that reminds me too much of schitzophrenia, talking to oneself and giggling all alone. Or just in vain.

In my time here I got a lot of DC's and follishly burned them on leveling. Back then I didn't care for DC's though, I didn't need them, I had no use safe using them to level.
Now that I need them to get a reuqest is it hard to get them, so, ye4ah.
my point, keep Rping and don't hope for them and you'll get them faster than you may think.

So let me get this straight. This thread advocates playing with yourself?

Its just a matter of timing. This is also proof that doing meaningful stuff with a group of other characters also attracts DC:s. I have earned most of my currently remaining (not for long) DC:s during diplomatic negotiations between factions and such stuff.

Yes, like this: Role-playing is like acting, you are assuming the role of that character, essentially being them. Your character will do things that you won't do and vice-versa. My character talks to his Gods' idol all the time, he talks to non-responsive NPC's, he talks to the animals that follow him around...all this whether anyone is around or not. Sometimes he talks to himself out loud too. (patrols can be boring) It's all a part of role-play.

Here's an idea. Organise an event open to a broad part of the player base. My bard did Toag's Festival of Bardic Taunting at one point.
That's usually a sure way to DC's and it will give other players something to do to... RP wise, not just DC farming wise...

Just because you don't see someone, that doesn't mean no one is there. Could be another character hiding out in stealth mode or under invisibility, could be a DM just watching to see how you act/react to the world while you think you're alone. Point being, if your character would do something....let them do it! This, in particular, is something I would LOVE to see more of. People actually letting their characters -do something- while they're alone (or think they're alone), rather than mindlessly walk/run around in search of an "audience" to observe their actions, or going around roboticly killing monsters/beasts during a "solo hunt" without a single emote tossed in somewhere. Oh, and by the way. I don't consider voiceset emotes, in and of themselves, to be RPing. When used in conjunction with typed out emotes, yes. Case in point, I see a lot of this during "hunting" sessions - people using the voiceset emotes to give commands or shout their battle cries. While that in and of itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, taking the time to add a bit of your own text in between "Have at ye" or "You won't walk away from this" (or whatever voiceset emote it is you use) will go a long way toward adding more flavor and context into the "hunt", whether solo or as a group.

It works, just cause you dont see anyone, doesnt mean their not there.

This thread has been helpful to me because it has pointed out to me where I have fallen short in my RP. Things like too much OOC, etc. The idea of rp'ing even when you think you are alone is a good one. A good habit to get into.

use the wand, get in parties, get in factions, rp wherever. hell, I got dcs from asking random people outside cordor how my drow can get a signet ring. I've gotten a DC for losing in pvp while I was trying to run around with my grossly lowerlevel sorc trying to cast light on the SD. I've gotten a DC for talking with my familiar in a bar, I've gotten DCs for holding sermons over my altar, with a croud and without one.
If you are helping someone with something they need dm oversight to do, eg help a new convert to your faith lose their fall status, you are bound to get something. Really, just get involved and active. I probably had a year and a half where I got like, 3 dcs total, then I got out there and got active and broadened what I did, and used my wand more, and I've gotten far more.
And begging for DCs will get you less, even if a DM is giving them out for an event and you get missed, dont be confrontational about it. It's happened to me before, it's happened to others as well.

Or just in vain. ...until they answer you lol as in doing it around NPC's then a DM 'possesses' them and starts rp'ing That's always a surprising experience and fun too. I mean you don't have to get all chatty with some NPC you for the most part don't expect a response from but it does add color to let's say walk into the noway inn and say here's some gold keep 'em comin' barkeep! *tosses bag on the bar* or even use their name if your a regular customer that goes there quite often. lol I've commented to what Cordor NPC guards have said in there autotext....like "why the adventurers always around on my shift?" lol..."to keep you from being bored!" lol something like that. Then a DM might possess that guard and start rp'ing with you. It just depends. Another instance Everyone around Rose was dying getting buried alive in Tarkuul at a mini-event the other day. lol I knew Rose would bite it as soon as she drop her ethereal visage being lol what over 20 or more feet underground. But technically she wouldn't have been able to see the others dying and she really don't know much about magic soo *crunch!* Took a whole reset to dig her out and I couldn't play her. I did get a DC for it though, just because I went along with the information she had not that I had. Oh and I like the tips Nehky gave. Other than for collecting DC's it's good rp advice. That alone was worth the thread. Also rp'ing while hunting makes it -way- more fun, Than just the red glow monster grind >.< This takes timing and a little skill or your toon will get killed lol but it's still worth it.

My advice use the DC wand correctly but never expect to get DCs. I think the two best points so far are "Don't play for shineys" and "Get involved in something larger then yourself". Dispite what we might start of thinking about our PCs they are not the center of everything on the server, in your faction or even in the chance encounter on the road. Play every moment like you are simply living that PCs life and expect nothing OOCwise.
Second thing I've not seen yet here is the correct use of the Wand in case your view of it has not been corrected. Always remember that it's basically useless to use it if there is no DM. Check forum first before you ring it and that is the second thing to remember about it. It MUST be used at the start of RP. Not as you walk away from what you THINK was a DC earning RP. You have to take the risk at the on set of any RP that it will be epic or a flop. Though I'll admit some of my flops I think DMs gave me one or two of my DC just for the risk of using my wand on something so average. Not promising anything on the DM Teams behalf there. I'm just pointing out that you use it, play the PCs life and take what comes to you without expecting it.
One last idea that some disagree with I've found. Use your DCs to enhance your /RP/ and not your PC. PC getting married? Ask for a custom ring for her/him. Part of a faction? Ask for a placeable that can be used at group meetings. They are earned through RP so why not make use of them to make your next RP even better! You don't have to spend many, 1-3, to really do something to make your next RP epic
Disclaimer: These are just my suggestions and not a criticism of how some people play thier PCs

I was hoping this was a shameless topic crusading for people to donate their hoards of DCs to your cool item/character/etc. If you're asking because you want DCs from DMs for your roleplay, well, keep roleplaying and hope you get them. There's no set way for DMs to want to give you DCs. Each DM has their own timezones and inclinations for giving them, and sometimes I swear it depends on their mood.

I'm not gonna claim to be some almighty rper because I have had (and spent stupidly) lots of DCs. But. It seems to me most of the 'surprise', ie not-event DCs I have received have been in RP that is emotional for -me- as a player. I find I connect better and just lend a lot more to the RP then.
But that's me.
Don't hang out in Cordor/the forest and do fluff RP. It's fun, and helps make connections, but that doesn't seem to fit the category of EXCEPTIONAL RP, which is what DCs connote.
My 2 cents.

I'd add, though, that you can hang out in Cordor or the forest and do awesome RP, instead of fluff RP. I've had a DC or two tossed at me in the forest.

I've gotten DCs in Cordor Square. It's not the location, but the level of RP you bring to those locations. While the forest or Cordor may make some people leery about seeing the RP people do there (I'm leery about it at times, myself), it's really only a standard if you let it be.
My advice: RP and forget about DCs.

Same here with "a watched pot never boils." Just get into your character as much as possible. The less you notice what you are and aren't getting, the more likely a DM will, I've found. In other words, eventually one will see you, and think "hey, this guy is interesting, and I haven't followed him around before...hmmm". If you deserve some, you'll get them, eventually. You just gotta be willing to do the right thing and keep RPing whether you're getting them as often as you'd like, or not.

nice post Chumpe, I hope you got out of it what you wanted. I know I walked away with a bit more knowledge, on rp'ing, the use of the DC wand and what the DM's expect.

Since OP asked for a lock, I'm happy to wrap this up on a positive note. Thanks for helping him, playas.
